Book excerpt: Money for Old Rope - Part 2 is the second 'best of' collection of best-selling books that reveal the origins and history of just about everything we can think of. In fact, as one wise man suggested, it is the history of everything you didn't realise you wanted to know about, until you found out about it. A must have for dinner conversations and pub chat the world over, this book of history will help to make you feel clever. In this edition we reveal the history of more of our favourite phrases and learn why blood is thicker than water, something bites the dust, we can be double crossed, what the graveyard shift is, why it can be cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey and why that Cheshire Cat grins so often. There are hundreds more tales from history that explain how the English language became so rich and expressive. Then famous urban legends also get an airing including the creepy case of a frozen Walt Disney, the legendary stolen kidney story and did Keith Moon really drive his roller into a swimming pool? These tales are hilariously explained along with many others. Then the world's great mysteries are covered in ten minutes flat and the truth about Bigfoot, who really makes Crop Circles and what really happened to Glenn Miller, among others, is revealed. As are the true stories behind Little Miss Muffet, Old Mother Hubbard, Ring a Ring a Rose's and Pop Goes the Weasel. Many more of our childhood favourite rhymes are also exposed in all of their gory glory. Then, of course, the fabulous stories of The Molly Maguire's, The Green Man, The Royal Oak, The Rose and Crown and the White Hart are revealed and why they are remembered in that typically English fashion of naming a high street pub after them. Loads more of our favourite local boozers also have a tale to tell involving a historic person, or event. Then we move into the food section and we find out who Caesar was and what he did for your salad, how the people from Hamburg brought their hamburger with them from Germany, and what the French had to do with your favourite fries. The great stars from the past have also influenced our favourite foods and we find out what Anna Pavlova had to do with deserts and how Suzette flavoured our crepes. Of course such a section would not be complete until we find out how the Country Captain Chicken found its way onto the menu as America's first curry. Finally we turn to words and discover who first passed the buck and who staged the first Boycott. How the word doolally became part of our culture and the same too for the hecklers and why political rallies in Scotland first created the art of heckling. Who were the original patsy's, what is Groundhog Day and who were the first dunces? In fact, Money for Old Rope - Part 2 reveals the delightful history of just about everything, from the Anoraks to the Zombies

Book Executing Magic in the Modern Era

Download or read book Executing Magic in the Modern Era written by Owen Davies and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license This book explores the magical and medical history of executions from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century by looking at the afterlife potency of criminal corpses, the healing activities of the executioner, and the magic of the gallows site. The use of corpses in medicine and magic has been recorded back into antiquity. The lacerated bodies of Roman gladiators were used as a source of curative blood, for instance. In early modern Europe, a great trade opened up in ancient Egyptian mummies and the fat of executed criminals, plundered as medicinal cure-alls. However, this is the first book to consider the demand for the blood of the executed, the desire for human fat, the resort to the hanged man’s hand, and the trade in hanging rope in the modern era. It ends by look at the spiritual afterlife of dead criminals.

Book Inglorious

  • Author : Mark Avery
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2015-07-30
  • ISBN : 1472917421
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Inglorious written by Mark Avery and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF 2015'S BOOKS OF THE YEAR IN THE TIMES AND THE MAIL ON SUNDAY. A hard-hitting, passionate and well-researched book about the conflict between driven grouse shooting and nature conservation in Britain, with a foreword by Chris Packham. Driven grouse shooting, where flocks of Red Grouse are chased by lines of beaters so that they fly over lines of 'guns' that shoot the fast-flying birds, is a peculiarly British fieldsport. It is also peculiarly British in that it is deeply rooted in the British class system. This multi-million pound business dominates the hills of the north of England – the Pennines, the North Yorkshire Moors, the Cheviots – and throughout Scotland. Grouse shooting is big business. VERY big business And backed by powerful, wealthy lobbying groups, its tendrils run throughout British society. Inglorious makes the case for banning driven grouse shooting. The facts and arguments are presented fairly but the author, Mark Avery, states from the start why he has, after many years of soul-searching, come down in favour of an outright ban. There is too much illegal killing of wildlife, such as Buzzards, Golden Eagles, and, most egregiously of all, Hen Harriers; and, as a land use, it wrecks the ecology of the hills. However, grouse shooting is economically important, and it is a great British tradition. All of these, and other points of view, are given fair and detailed treatment and analysis – and the author talks to a range of people on different sides of the debate. The book also sets out Avery's campaign with Chris Packham to gain support for the proposal to ban grouse shooting, culminating in 'Hen Harrier Day', timed to coincide with the 'Glorious' 12th. This new paperback edition includes new material on what went on in 2015, including the devastating floods of that winter, bringing the story right up to date. Mark Avery continues to stir up a debate about fieldsports, the countryside and big business in a book that all British conservationists will want to read.
