Book excerpt: The papers published in this book were presented and dis cussed on occasion of the celebration of Albert Kervyn de Lettenhove's retirement on 29-30 May 1986. This conference was made feasible through the participation of a large au dience and the generous financial support of the Commission of the European Communities. The sessions were organised under three topics, as are the papers in this book. The first session, chaired by Massimo Russo, Director-General, Commission ofthe European Com munities was devoted to an evaluation of past and current debates of central macro-economic problems, those of growth and business cycle stabilization. The second session, chaired by Jean Godeaux, Governor of Belgium's National Bank, looked at innovations in the conduct of monetary pol icy and the opportunities offered and problems associated with innovations in fiancial markets. The last session, chaired by Baron Michel Woitrin, formerly Professor of Eco nomics and Head Administrator of the Universite Catholi que de Louvain, contains several empirical analyses and pol icy proposals. I 30 years ago growth theory was a very promising research field, at the center of macroeconomics and macroeconomics was at the center of economics. Robert Solow -one of the major contributors to growth theory -reexamines the perti nence of that body of theory to problems of our times. A. Steinherr and D. Download or read book Rethinking Money written by Bernard Lietaer and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reveals how our monetary system reinforces scarcity, and how communities are already using new paradigms to foster sustainable prosperity. In the United States and across Europe, our economies are stuck in an agonizing cycle of repeated financial meltdowns. Yet solutions already exist, not only our recurring fiscal crises but our ongoing social and ecological debacles as well. These changes came about not through increased conventional taxation, enlightened self-interest, or government programs, but by people simply rethinking the concept of money. In Rethinking Money, Bernard Lietaer and Jacqui Dunne explore the origins of our current monetary system—built on bank debt and scarcity—revealing how its limitations give rise to so many serious problems. The authors then present stories of ordinary people and communities using new money, working in cooperation with national currencies, to strengthen local economies, create work, beautify cities, provide education, and more. These real-world examples are just the tip of the iceberg—over four thousand cooperative currencies are already in existence. The book provides remedies for challenges faced by governments, businesses, nonprofits, local communities, and even banks. It demystifies a complex and critically important topic and offers meaningful solutions that will do far more than restore prosperity—it will provide the framework for an era of sustainable abundance.

Download or read book The Foreign Critical Reputation of F Scott Fitzgerald 1980 2000 written by Linda C. Stanley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-10-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography extends the work of Stanley's first volume, The Foreign Critical Reputation of F. Scott Fitzgerald: An Analysis and Annotated Bibliography, to the final two decades of the 20th century. It includes literature from the former countries of the USSR, Romania, India, and Canada, as well as countries that were covered in the first volume, such as Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan. One of the major findings that emerges is that Fitzgerald's poetic prose is extremely difficult to translate, but new translations continue to appear. The introduction to this volume provides a synthesis of Fitzgerald scholarship abroad at the turn of the 21st century and points to new directions already suggested that may represent challenges to current scholarship. An extended analysis introduces each chapter. Each chapter also includes a chronological list of translations and editions of Fitzgerald's work from his earliest appearances in print to those appearing in 2000. The most substantial section of each chapter features fairly detailed annotations of monographs, collections, book chapters, essays, conference papers, articles, reviews, and school editions. This compilation will intrigue anyone interested the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
