Book CAPITAL Complete 3 Volume Edition

Download or read book CAPITAL Complete 3 Volume Edition written by Karl Marx and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 1645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Marx's 'Capital' is a seminal work in the study of political economy and sociology, delving into the social and economic structures of capitalist societies. Written in a dense and analytical style, the book explores the relationships between labor, commodities, and capital, offering profound insights into the dynamics of capitalist exploitation and alienation. Through a thorough examination of the capitalist mode of production, Marx uncovers the contradictions inherent in a system driven by profit and accumulation. The book's historical context, written in the mid-19th century, remains relevant today in understanding the foundations of modern economic systems. Karl Marx, a German philosopher and economist, was deeply influenced by the social inequalities and injustices of his time, leading him to write 'Capital' as a critique of capitalism. Drawing on his background in philosophy and political theory, Marx sought to provide a comprehensive analysis of the economic forces shaping society, advocating for a more equitable and just system. His groundbreaking theories on labor, value, and class struggle have had a lasting impact on social and political thought. I highly recommend 'Capital (Complete 3 Volume Edition)' to readers interested in delving into the complexities of capitalism and its effects on society. Marx's provocative analysis challenges readers to critically reflect on the structures of power and inequality that define our economic systems.

Download or read book Capital written by Karl Marx and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marx for the twenty-first century The first new English translation in fifty years—and the only one based on the last German edition revised by Marx himself Featuring extensive original commentary, including a foreword by acclaimed political theorist Wendy Brown “An astounding achievement.”—China Miéville, author of October: The Story of the Russian Revolution Karl Marx (1818–1883) was living in exile in England when he embarked on an ambitious, multivolume critique of the capitalist system of production. Though only the first volume saw publication in Marx’s lifetime, it would become one of the most consequential books in history. This magnificent new edition of Capital is a translation of Marx for the twenty-first century. It is the first translation into English to be based on the last German edition revised by Marx himself, the only version that can be called authoritative, and it features extensive commentary and annotations by Paul North and Paul Reitter that draw on the latest scholarship and provide invaluable perspective on the book and its complicated legacy. At once precise and boldly readable, this translation captures the momentous scale and sweep of Marx’s thought while recovering the elegance and humor of the original source. For Marx, our global economic system is relentlessly driven by “value”—to produce it, capture it, trade it, and, most of all, to increase it. Lifespans are shortened under the demand for ever-greater value. Days are lengthened, work is intensified, and the division of labor deepens until it leaves two classes, owners and workers, in constant struggle for life and livelihood. In Capital, Marx reveals how value came to tyrannize our world, and how the history of capital is a chronicle of bloodshed, colonization, and enslavement. With a foreword by Wendy Brown and an afterword by William Clare Roberts, this is a critical edition of Capital for our time, one that faithfully preserves the vitality and directness of Marx’s German prose and renders his ideas newly relevant to modern readers.

Book Credit and Debt in Eighteenth Century England

Download or read book Credit and Debt in Eighteenth Century England written by Alexander Wakelam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the eighteenth century hundreds of thousands of men and women were cast into prison for failing to pay their debts. This apparently illogical system where debtors were kept away from their places of work remained popular with creditors into the nineteenth century even as Britain witnessed industrialisation, market growth, and the increasing sophistication of commerce, as the debtors’ prisons proved surprisingly effective. Due to insufficient early modern currency, almost every exchange was reliant upon the use of credit based upon personal reputation rather than defined collateral, making the lives of traders inherently precarious as they struggled to extract payments based on little more than promises. This book shows how traders turned to debtors’ prisons to give those promises defined consequences, the system functioning as a tool of coercive contract enforcement rather than oppression of the poor. Credit and Debt demonstrates for the first time the fundamental contribution of debt imprisonment to the early modern economy and reveals how traders made use of existing institutions to alleviate the instabilities of commerce in the context of unprecedented market growth. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in economic history and early modern British history.
