This book was released on 1992-12-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the major issues concerning the compilation of money and banking statistics for the fifteen republics of the former Soviet Union (FSU), including (1) the treatment of ruble currency circulation and (2) the classification of claims on FSU financial institutions. The paper proposes the use of a monetary authorities’ account to encompass both the domestic and foreign aspects of ruble currency circulation and a classification scheme for monetary accounts that permits the construction of analytically meaningful monetary aggregates. These issues are addressed within an analytical framework that transforms the Gosbank Accounting System into monetary statistics broadly consistent with the Fund’s methodology.

Book Government Finance Statistics in the Countries of the Former Soviet Union

Download or read book Government Finance Statistics in the Countries of the Former Soviet Union written by Ms.Marie Montanjees and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines compilation issues affecting government finance statistics (GFS) in the Baltics, the Russian Federation and other states of the former Soviet Union (the FSU countries). It finds that there are several major problems affecting the use of FSU fiscal reports as source documents for compilation of GFS data. These include the inadequate coverage of the data in the fiscal reports, the structure of the classification codes, and the level of aggregation in fiscal reports. The paper also examines a number of methodological issues and suggests appropriate treatments for certain types of transactions found in the FSU countries. Finally, the paper identifies priority areas for the future development of GFS reporting systems for these countries. A supplementary paper provides bridge tables between the fiscal classification codes of selected FSU countries and the GFS classification codes; that paper is available from the author on request.

Book Cash Shortage in the Former Soviet Union

Download or read book Cash Shortage in the Former Soviet Union written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-06-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unexpected shortage of banknotes emerged during 1992 in the former Soviet Union. The cash shortage is explained by the asymmetry in the monetary union that prevailed, under which one member (the Russian Federation) controlled banknote production while every member could create deposit money. Interest rate rigidity forestalled an equilibrating adjustment in demand for banknotes. The possible efficiency costs of the cash shortage are explored.

Book Global Criminal and Sovereign Free Economies and the Demise of the Western Democracies

Download or read book Global Criminal and Sovereign Free Economies and the Demise of the Western Democracies written by Robert J. Bunker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the many economic benefits of globalization and the triumph and spread of democratic liberalism with the end of the Cold War, following the demise of the Soviet Union. This work takes issue with such "wine and roses" perspectives about the future of the Western democracies and their faith-based views on the moral purity of a globalized marketplace. It also questions many of the assumptions found in the status quo reinforcing discipline of international political economy (IPE)—a discipline that focuses on the formal and legitimate economies and the façade they present that international relations and commerce is still dominated and dictated solely by the old Westphalian state centric system. Having highlighted these concerns, this book looks at two major themes. The first theme focuses on the theoretical perception that a "Dark Renaissance" is taking place globally—one in which the Western liberal democracies and its citizens are ill prepared to respond because it exists at the trans-civilization level, bridging the modern to the post-modern world. The second theme focuses on the actual process of state deconstruction that is taking place. This process is leading to what may become the very undoing of the democracies. Drawing together experts from a variety of backgrounds, this work explores the increasing shift away from formal based capitalism and evaluates through case studies how different states are responding to the challenges they face. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of international political economy.

Book Comparative Economics in a Transforming World Economy third edition

Download or read book Comparative Economics in a Transforming World Economy third edition written by J. Barkley Rosser, Jr. and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approach to comparative economic systems that avoids simple dichotomies to examine a wide variety of institutional and systemic arrangements, with updated country case studies. Comparative economics, with its traditional dichotomies of socialism versus capitalism, private versus state, and planning versus market, is changing. This innovative textbook offers a new approach to understanding different economic systems that reflects both recent transformations in the world economy and recent changes in the field. This new edition examines a wide variety of institutional and systemic arrangements, many of which reflect deep roots in countries' cultures and histories. The book has been updated and revised throughout, with new material in both the historical overview and the country case studies. It offers a broad survey of economic systems, then looks separately at market capitalism, Marxism and socialism, and “new traditional economies” (with an emphasis on the role of religions, Islam in particular, in economic systems). It presents case studies of advanced capitalist nations, including the United States, Japan, Sweden, and Germany; alternative paths in the transition from socialist to market economies taken by such countries as Russia, the former Soviet republics, Poland, China, and the two Koreas; and developing countries, including India, Iran, South Africa, Mexico, and Brazil. The new chapters on Brazil and South Africa complete the book's coverage of all five BRICS nations; the chapter on South Africa extends the book's comparative treatment to another continent. The chapter on Brazil with its account of the role of the Amazon rain forest as a great carbon sink expands the coverage of global environmental and sustainability issues. Each chapter ends with discussion questions.

Book Russian Enterprise Reform

Download or read book Russian Enterprise Reform written by Harry G. Broadman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enhance and sustain economic prosperity, Russian authorities must improve the business climate so that firms restructure and the private sector thrives within a market environment. Meeting this challenge requires actions on several fronts. The Russian government asked the World Bank to write policy papers to address this issue. This volume contains those policy papers which were then presented at a high-level workshop in Moscow. The topics include: • removing impediments to robust interfirm competition, such as structural concentration, arbitrary regulatory practices, and entry barriers; • strengthening corporate governance incentive systems; • enhancing the nascent institutional framework for the exercise of creditor rights and implementation of enterprise bankruptcy procedures; • reducing barter and other nonmonetary forms of business transactions; and • fostering enterprise restructuring. The volume also contains formal comments on these papers presented by senior Russian officials at the workshop.
