Book Cecilia Vald s or El Angel Hill

Download or read book Cecilia Vald s or El Angel Hill written by Cirilo Villaverde and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecilia Valdés is arguably the most important novel of 19th century Cuba. Originally published in New York City in 1882, Cirilo Villaverde's novel has fascinated readers inside and outside Cuba since the late 19th century. In this new English translation, a vast landscape emerges of the moral, political, and sexual depravity caused by slavery and colonialism. Set in the Havana of the 1830s, the novel introduces us to Cecilia, a beautiful light-skinned mulatta, who is being pursued by the son of a Spanish slave trader, named Leonardo. Unbeknownst to the two, they are the children of the same father. Eventually Cecilia gives in to Leonardo's advances; she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl. When Leonardo, who gets bored with Cecilia after a while, agrees to marry a white upper class woman, Cecilia vows revenge. A mulatto friend and suitor of hers kills Leonardo, and Cecilia is thrown into prison as an accessory to the crime. For the contemporary reader Helen Lane's masterful translation of Cecilia Valdés opens a new window into the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba and the Caribbean. There are the elite social circles of European and New World Whites, the rich culture of the free people of color, the class to which Cecilia herself belonged, and then the slaves, divided among themselves between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in the New World, and those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the rich people in Havana. Cecilia Valdés thus presents a vast portrait of sexual, social, and racial oppression, and the lived experience of Spanish colonialism in Cuba.

Book excerpt: A dramatic and intriguing true Georgian tale of love, betrayal and survival. Lucy, a strong-willed girl from a wealthy family, was brought up on the English-Welsh border and married a Caribbean plantation owner, Sam Lord, for love, meanwhile he married her for her fortune, at a time when a woman was a chattel and everything she had, including her children, became her husband's. Abused and imprisoned in Barbados, she escaped with the help of enslaved people. A vibrant intimate description of early 19th-century life - giving birth at sea, braving disease and cruelty, and witnessing the abject misery of slavery - this is a story of courage in adversity, a runaway marriage to an unfaithful husband and a descent from a life of pampered luxury to a struggle for survival in a far-off land.

Book Tourism and Crisis

Download or read book Tourism and Crisis written by Gustav Visser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new millennium has been characterised by several crises ranging from dramatic acts of terror to natural disasters, as well as the most significant economic recession since the late 1920s. However, despite such challenges the global tourism system has in the main retained its past vitality although in some cases in a different form. The book investigates different kinds of "crisis" and unpacks understandings of crisis in relation to various components in the contemporary tourism system. The aim of this book therefore is to critically analyse the relationship between tourism and crises. The volume focuses on the roles and potential of tourism for development and relations between tourism, environment and broad global process of change at different levels of analysis, highlighting different types of "crisis". In particular it questions the general conviction that tourism-led development is a sustainable and necessarily solid platform from which to develop local, national and regional economies from a range of perspectives. Written by leading academics in the field this book offers valuable insight into tourism’s relationship with socio – cultural, environment, economic and political crisis as well as the challenges facing future tourism development.

Download or read book The Ashwander Rules written by Neal Rechtman and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About The Ashwander Rules This project began over a decade ago as a napkin rumination: what would Louis Brandeis think of today's US Supreme Court? If he was alive, Brandeis' sense of propriety would constrain him from any direct comment, so I imagined how me might address the question as a novelist (in a private letter he once expressed an interest in trying his hand at fiction). The result is The Ashwander Rules, a parable of the modern Supreme Court, in which a secret Israeli Mossad operation in Washington D.C. works to save a fictional chief justice from assassination at the hands of domestic terrorists. In the spirit of Brandeis' Supreme Court opinion writing, The Ashwander Rules is an effort to educate the public -- and remind the Court -- about the importance of judicial restraint, especially as it relates to questions of constitutional law. The narrative also introduces a non-fiction alternative to two-party politics called the American Majority Party, www.american-majority.org, which is an internet adaptation of a good government initiative organized by Brandeis in 1903.
