Download or read book Irish Emigration and Canadian Settlement written by Cecil J. Houston and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1990-12-15 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mid-nineteenth-century Canada, the Irish outnumbered the English and Scots two to one. Yet they have been much less studied than their US counterparts, even though their experience was very different. Irish settlers arrived earlier in Canada, formed a larger proportion of the founding communities, and were largely rural-based; more than half were Protestant. The Famine provided only a rather late part of the Irish emigration to Canada, which took place principally between 1816 and 1855. The authors evaluate both emigration and settlement and present as well revealing personal documents about intense, often painful experiences of the settlers. Part I explores the geographical links – particularly the phenomenon of chain migration – that shaped decisions to leave Ireland. Part II examines patterns of settlement in the new land. Part III, with biographies of immigrants and collections of letters written home, chronicles personal and social life in the new land and the abiding interest in family and friends in Canada and back in Ireland. The documents illustrate links and patterns revealed in the earlier analysis of emigration and settlement; they also offer an additional, intimate perspective on a key phase in the cultural history of Canada and Ireland.

Download or read book Journeys to Justice written by Joe Gunn and published by . This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book turns to the wisdom of an older generation of Christian activists from all across Canada (including Quebec), in order to inspire a direction and model for future faith-based action for social and ecological justice. Written by Joe Gunn, a long-time leader within the Canadian justice ecumenical milieu, and current Executive Director of Citizens for Public Justice, the book promises to be a thoughtful and inspiring reflection based on interviews Joe will conduct with key Canadians from several ecumenical backgrounds. These are folks who have served as active models of social justice struggles across the nation over the years. While their witness, and that of many Christians, have contributed to the ending of apartheid, the partial cancellation of debts to poor countries, and the engagement in reconciliation and solidarity with Indigenous people, challenges remain: poverty, in Canada alone, continues to deprive families of abundant life, and achieving climate justice in a world addicted to oil appears daunting. The rationale behind the book is that it is important to evaluate 'what works' from varied perspectives in every era, as well as to know where we have been in order to discern how to proceed. This line of thinking then, is especially important now, since the call to justice is arguably greater today than it has been in the past. With the inclusion of at least one chapter reflection by a Millennial Christian activist on the wisdom of an older generation of Christian activists, this book can inform and inspire a newer generation of faith-based public justice activists today."--

Download or read book Building a University written by John Leroux and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of New Brunswick started in 1785 with a formal petition to the Crown. From its initial shared schoolhouse accommodations to the opening of its own monumental stone quarters overlooking the town of Fredericton in 1829, UNB enjoyed slow but steady growth in the early 20th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Fredericton campus quadrupled in size, often using traditional red-brick Georgian designs, while the new Saint John campus pursued a more modernist direction. The meandering course of UNB's architectural development embodies the hopes, dreams, and occasional disappointments of the University in a way that deserves a long overdue appraisal. Generously illustrated with current and archival photographs, drawings, and maps, Building a University traces the development of the two UNB campuses. From its tentative wood-frame structures to landmark buildings such as the Richard J. Currie Centre at UNB Fredericton and the University Commons building at UNBSJ, Leroux captures the personalities of UNB's builders and architects and the character and value of their built legacy.
