The sculpture was created in Italy in the mid-nineteenth century but is housed at the Presentation Convent in St. John's, Newfoundland. Its existence is one of the best-kept secrets in North America. Rebecca can't help but wonder why the Italian artist, in 1856, allowed such a brilliant example of his work to come to the remote island. She discovers that although the work is signed by Strazza, it is not listed with his other sculptures, and there are no existing documents for the sale of the work. Rebecca travels to Italy to solve the mystery. Her research on Giovanni Strazza and the Veiled Virgin will be the subject for her doctoral degree in art history. Luca Rossi, the head of the sculpture department at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, reveals to Rebecca that he has a family ancestor who worked with Strazza in the 1850s. His sister has kept Mario Rossi's art journals, and Rebecca goes to Rome to study them. In one of his journals is written the tantalizing words: find Nina Gatti. Through a startling discovery made by one of Luca Rossi's students, Rebecca learns that Nina Gatti was the governess-chaperone for Rosa Bouchard--the model for Strazza's Veiled Virgin sculpture. Their crime simply being born in Afghanistan as a woman in an era unfavorable to their gender. I have investigated and listened to long hours of heartbreaking stories by Afghan women in numerous countries, conversed with old and young women, and read plentiful anecdotes of Afghan womens narratives around the world for over ten years. Although I cannot claim what they have experienced completely, I have exerted years of love inscribing for them their narratives, their depiction of what took place in their lives, as well as their interpretation of their struggles and daily burdens. Although they are my words, nevertheless they represent their rightful voice. While it is my pen that was used to write these poems, in every poem, in every verse, it is the fighting potency of these women. And we witness through their lens the long-suffering echoed throughout the book in their own words. I am blessed to have been favored as an unassuming envoy for their voices.

This monograph presents a solution for this quandary: these 16th century sources don't agree because they are not talking about the same painting. If we consider this possibility, that Leonardo painted not one, but two versions of the Mona Lisa, then all of these problems begin to resolve themselves. In fact, throughout his life Leonardo would often return to a motif or composition for a variety of reasons. Thus we have at least two versions of The Virgin of the Rocks, painted by Leonardo with the De Predis brothers in Milan, and two versions of the Madonna of the Yarnwinder, painted by Leonardo with his assistants in Florence. In other words, the proposition that Leonardo may have painted not one, but two versions of the Mona Lisa is by no means far-fetched. Nonetheless, it also raises an important question. If Leonardo did paint an earlier version in addition to the Louvre Mona Lisa, where is this portrait today? And how can we determine whether this painting is indeed an autograph, rather than one of the many Mona Lisa versions and copies that are still extant today?The answers to these questions are provided in this book, based on contributions by scholars from around the world. They include Prof. John Asmus of the University of California at San Diego; Prof. Vadim Parfenov at the State Electrotechnical University in St. Petersburg, Russia; Prof. Átila Soares da Costa Filho of the Universidade Cândido Mendes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Prof. Jason Halter of the University of Michigan; and Prof. Robert Meyrick of Aberystwyth University. In addition, this monograph includes contributions by noted art critic Gérard Boudin de l'Arche and two prominent artists, Albert Sauteur and Joe Mullins.
