Download or read book Sibylline Sisters written by Fiona Cox and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Virgil and his receptions is long and varied. His twentieth-century career transformed his appearance as an anaemic imitator of Homer into the 'Father of the West', speaking above all for the marginalized and exiled. At the turn of the millennium it is women writers who, having been largely absent from the story of Virgil's reception, are for the first time shaping a new aetas Vergiliana by drawing on his poems to speak of their own preoccupations and concerns. Through an analysis of Virgil's presence in the work of contemporary women writers from North America (Joyce Carol Oates, Janet Lembke, Ursula Le Guin), Britain (Margaret Drabble, A. S. Byatt, Ruth Fainlight, Michèle Roberts, Carol Ann Duffy, U. A. Fanthorpe, Josephine Balmer), Ireland (Eavan Boland), and continental Europe (Christa Wolf, Hélène Cixous, Charlotte Delbo and Monique Wittig), this book identifies a new Virgil: one who speaks in female tones of the anxieties, exclusions, pleasures, and threats of the contemporary world. While each of the female writers included in this volume draws upon her own distinct cultural heritage, Cox focuses on a number of shared themes and values which emerge through their work. Through the works of these modern versions of the Sibyl, Virgil speaks both of explicitly female concerns and wider cultural issues and threats that shadow modern life.

Download or read book Queer Ideas written by CLAGS: Center for LGBTQ Studies and published by Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential text documenting the foundation and rise of queer theory. Founded in 1992, the David R. Kessler lectures represent the foreground of queer studies in the US, featuring legendary thinkers such as Cherríe Moraga, Samuel R. Delany, Dean Spade, Sara Ahmed, and more. This canonical volume brings together the first ten lectures and explores questions of sexuality and gender, as well as how new—and queer—ideas are thought into being. Queer Ideas features interdisciplinary scholarship from the field’s founding thinkers: Edmund White on literature and criticism, Barbara Smith on Black lesbian and gay history, Esther Newton on being butch, Samuel R. Delany on class and capitalism, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick on love, Judith Butler on human rights, and more. This new edition remains a testimony to queer studies as it emerged in the last quarter of the twentieth century, and provides a necessary introduction for a new generation of feminist scholars, thinkers, and activists.

Download or read book New Fairy Tales written by Comtesse de Ségur and published by 2Language Books. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 1393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Fairy Tales: English & French · The English text has been translated from the French. · The French text has been re-worked. · Contains commentaries on some parts of the text. · Contains a summary of French grammar. · Contains a Translation Skills Test (with Grammar tips). · Can be read in ‘English to French’; ‘French to English’; ‘English’; or ‘French’. THIS EDITION: New Fairy Tales (in French, Nouveaux Contes de fées) is a classic French book written by Comtesse de Ségur. It contains a collection of five smaller stories. This volume includes an introductory section summarising the important aspects of French grammar. The digital edition also contains a translation skills test. (Includes verb conjugation and other grammar hints.) The dual-language text has been arranged into small bilingual snippets for quick and easy cross-referencing. The content is ideal for assisting the intermediate language learner to transition to foreign language only content. Also, if the content is too difficult, there is other material put out by 2Langauge Books that can help. The reader can choose between six options: Section 1: English to French Section 2: French to English Section 3: English Section 4: French Section 5: English to French Skills Test Section 6: French to English Skills Test The eventual aim is to read with a comfortable level of understanding only in the foreign language. If you are a beginner, read the native language snippet first. If you are at an intermediate level, read the foreign language snippet first. The advanced level is like the beginners level, except you have to try and figure out the foreign language text, instead of having it provided. One way to do this is to cover the foreign text snippet. In the digital edition, you can take an intermediate or advanced level skills test. Many basic language books offer some form of audio support. Internet services — primarily news based radio stations — offer podcasts. Audio from television is an additional resource, and can be formatted for use on various digital platforms. However, if audio is an important component of your interest in languages, electronic devices that support quality text-to-speech (TTS) will likely be appealing. With a library card, TTS technology (in a device that supports the relevant content), and the above mentioned resources (as digital content), an entire language learning system is available for not much more than a cup of coffee! There is no substantial financial outlay to get you started. Furthermore, there are no additional ongoing fees (and updates), and there are no expiry dates on ‘premium’ content and resources. Download or read book Saints hommes de Chiraz et du F rs written by Denise Aigle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saints hommes de Chiraz et du Fārs. Pouvoir, société et lieux de sacralité (Xe-XVe s.), Denise Aigle studies the spiritual role, but also the political one, played by the Sufi shaykhs. From the tenth century, Fārs was a a land of holiness with Shaykh Kabīr in Shiraz and Murshid al-Dīn Abū Isḥāq in Kāzarūn. This research is based on hagiographic sources, historical chronicles, literary sources and archival documents. The author shows how the pre-Islamic history of Fārs was integrated into spiritual Islam thanks to the mystical speculations of the Sufi shaykhs. The particular interest of this research is its contribution to the history of Lāristān, a region that has long remained terra incognita. Thanks to handwritten hagiographic documents preserved in several private libraries, we discover the existence and the role of spiritual masters until now totally unknown.
