Book The Cursing Mommy s Book of Days

Download or read book The Cursing Mommy s Book of Days written by Ian Frazier and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his widely read columns for The New Yorker, Ian Frazier's uproarious first novel, The Cursing Mommy's Book of Days, centers on a profoundly memorable character, sprung from an impressively fertile imagination. Structured as a daybook of sorts, the book follows the Cursing Mommy—beleaguered wife of Larry and mother of two boys, twelve and eight—as she tries (more or less) valiantly to offer tips on how to do various tasks around the home, only to end up on the ground, cursing, surrounded by broken glass. Her voice is somewhere between Phyllis Diller's and Sylvia Plath's: a hilariously desperate housewife with a taste for swearing and large glasses of red wine, who speaks to the frustrations of everyday life. Frazier has demonstrated an astonishing ability to operate with ease in a variety of registers: from On the Rez, an investigation into the lives of modern day Oglala Sioux written with a mix of humor, compassion, and imagination, to Dating Your Mom, a sidesplitting collection of humorous essays that imagines, among other things, how and why you might begin a romance with your mother. Here, Frazier tackles another genre with his usual grace and aplomb, as well as an extra helping of his trademark wicked wit. The Cursing Mommy's failures and weaknesses are our own—and Frazier gives them a loving, satirical spin that is uniquely his own.

Book Enjoying Sunday Morning Breakfast with Mommy S Awesome Tales

Download or read book Enjoying Sunday Morning Breakfast with Mommy S Awesome Tales written by Stephanie Massey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fictional narrative of nonfictional stories that my mother would tell us every Sunday morning as we helped her prepare breakfast. First, we would wake up on Sunday mornings to Mommys beautiful voice joyously singing her favorite spiritual songs. Then, as she began to cook breakfast, we were her audience as she told us stories about her childhood and growing up with her siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and stories of her ancestors. Every Sunday, we would hear a new story although we heard some of the stories numerous times as we grew up. Mommy felt passionate about her familys history and was adamant that each one of her children knew our history. My familys history and the stories about Mommys youth and our ancestors still resonate clearly inside of my mind to this day. The stories have been passed down to my children. and I hope they also will continue this tradition of telling our familys history.

Book excerpt: He, was the number one corporation in the country, the head of the Luo Family. She was someone who had grown up in a well-off family, someone who had grown up in the love of her parents. Meeting someone from another country, he was no longer that cold and aloof young master from a thousand miles away. He protected, doted upon, and loved her. She had thought that her life would be given to her in such a sweet manner. Unexpectedly, that blank memory had been filled up. That shameful and desperate life had been left bloody in front of her. She could no longer face his tenderness. Five years later, when she returned to her old home, the figure under the Tower of London overlapped with the man she had dreamed of in her dreams. She stretched out her hand, but she dared not touch it. The little boy's soft little hands pulled at the corner of his clothes. He shifted his gaze from the Tower of London down, and those familiar eyes made his heart tremble. The word 'father' made his heart even more confused. He turned around and saw a woman whose clothes fluttered in the wind not too far away, who else could it be but the person he was desperately searching for. She hesitated, then lifted her foot and walked toward him, though this time she didn't know if he was her salvation or her doom. Five years, was he still her good man?

Book Manly Meals and Mom s Home Cooking

Download or read book Manly Meals and Mom s Home Cooking written by Jessamyn Neuhaus and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of what American cookbooks from the 1790s to the 1960s can show us about gender roles, food, and culture of their time. From the first edition of The Fannie Farmer Cookbook to the latest works by today’s celebrity chefs, cookbooks reflect more than just passing culinary fads. As historical artifacts, they offer a unique perspective on the cultures that produced them. In Manly Meals and Mom’s Home Cooking, Jessamyn Neuhaus offers a perceptive and piquant analysis of the tone and content of American cookbooks published between the 1790s and the 1960s, adroitly uncovering the cultural assumptions and anxieties—particularly about women and domesticity—they contain. Neuhaus’s in-depth survey of these cookbooks questions the supposedly straightforward lessons about food preparation they imparted. While she finds that cookbooks aimed to make readers—mainly white, middle-class women—into effective, modern-age homemakers who saw joy, not drudgery, in their domestic tasks, she notes that the phenomenal popularity of Peg Bracken’s 1960 cookbook, The I Hate to Cook Book, attests to the limitations of this kind of indoctrination. At the same time, she explores the proliferation of bachelor cookbooks aimed at “the man in the kitchen” and the biases they display about male and female abilities, tastes, and responsibilities. Neuhaus also addresses the impact of World War II rationing on homefront cuisine; the introduction of new culinary technologies, gourmet sensibilities, and ethnic foods into American kitchens; and developments in the cookbook industry since the 1960s. More than a history of the cookbook, Manly Meals and Mom’s Home Cooking provides an absorbing and enlightening account of gender and food in modern America. “An engaging analysis . . . Neuhaus provides a rich and well-researched cultural history of American gender roles through her clever use of cookbooks.” —Sarah Eppler Janda, History: Reviews of New Books “With sound scholarship and a focus on prescriptive food literature, Manly Meals makes an original and useful contribution to our understanding of how gender roles are institutionalized and perpetuated.” —Warren Belasco, senior editor of The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink “An excellent addition to the history of women’s roles in America, as well as to the history of cookbooks.” —Choice
