Book Finding the Magic in Mommyhood

Download or read book Finding the Magic in Mommyhood written by Sara Sadik and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the gaping cracks between our mommyhood expectations and the messy reality, magic shines through. So much legend, tradition, and everyday talk makes pregnancy out to be a magical experience. But there’s no sparkle, no glitter and glamour when you need to pee 3,302 times per night or are struggling to understand what each baby wail means. Finding the Magic in Mommyhood punctures those myths that becoming a mom is all radiance and bliss and balances the hopes and dreams of every new mom and mom-to-be by delivering a roller-coaster of emotion and honesty to recast every breakdown as a breakthrough. Sara knows, all around the globe, a mom is a mom is a mom. Regardless if baby’s first solid meal is pureed pear or . . . hummus. She shares her story of living in Dubai with NYC habits, a London-Lebanese mindset, and Palestinian perseverance to empower moms everywhere to find the good in the midst of the hard, discouraging, or overwhelming. Topics include the pre-preggo phase, pregnancy, and the first year of mommyhood, including how Sara adjusted when an X-ray revealed her baby had hip dysplasia—a congenital misalignment requiring her to wear a brace. Finding the Magic in Mommyhood tackles unexpected and even uncomfortable topics with ease and humor to help fellow moms dig extra deep to find strength, let alone magic in the moments when you resent this baby you’re supposed to love, loathe your husband, or lose yourself and want solely to find a glimpse of sanity . . . and you again.

Attaining excellence doesn’t have to be unsettling but it will take committed focus and a desire to parent well according to God’s grace and for His glory. Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you. Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Powerful, moving, brilliant . . . an utterly captivating read, and I came away from it with this astonished thought: There's nothing this writer can't do." --Elizabeth Gilbert For readers of A Gentleman in Moscow and Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, an ambitious, spellbinding historical novel about sensuality, censorship, and the novel that set off the sexual revolution. On the glittering shores of the Mediterranean in 1928, a dying author in exile races to complete his final novel. Lady Chatterley's Lover is a sexually bold love story, a searing indictment of class distinctions, and a study in sensuality. But the author, D.H. Lawrence, knows it will be censored. He publishes it privately, loses his copies to customs, and dies bereft. Booker Prize-longlisted author Alison MacLeod brilliantly recreates the novel's origins and boldly imagines its journey to freedom through the story of Jackie Kennedy, who was known to be an admirer. In MacLeod's telling, Jackie-in her last days before becoming first lady-learns that publishers are trying to bring D.H. Lawrence's long-censored novel to American and British readers in its full form. The U.S. government has responded by targeting the postal service for distributing obscene material. Enjoying what anonymity she has left, determined to honor a novel she loves, Jackie attends the hearing incognito. But there she is quickly recognized, and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover takes note of her interest and her outrage. Through the story of Lawrence's writing of Lady Chatterley's Lover, the historic obscenity trial that sought to suppress it in the United Kingdom, and the men and women who fought for its worldwide publication, Alison MacLeod captures the epic sweep of the twentieth century from war and censorship to sensuality and freedom. Exquisite, evocative, and grounded in history, Tenderness is a testament to the transformative power of fiction.

Book Deconstructing Masculinity Interrogating the Role of Symbolism in Gender Performativity

Download or read book Deconstructing Masculinity Interrogating the Role of Symbolism in Gender Performativity written by Lauren Dundes and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress towards gender parity is hindered by unconscious ways that hypermasculinity is valorized at a symbolic level. By deconstructing how social and textual phenomena as well as social structures contribute to gender performativity, we can elucidate hard-to-discern patterns that perpetuate hegemonic masculinity. The subliminal elevation of symbols of hypermasculinity excludes both women and non-gender conforming men. By delving into these symbolic meanings that operate subliminally, we can more effectively debunk beliefs that “real men” fall within narrow parameters of masculinity. There remains much to explore in terms of hidden pressures for men to constrain their expression of emotions, project an appearance of hardness, and equate violence with power, to name just a few persistent facets of toxic masculinity. While abstract forms of inculcating hypermasculinity are difficult to identify, interrogating their role in masculine performativity will result in a more comprehensive understanding of impediments to gender equality.
