Book Favorite Recipes of My Mother and Grandmothers

Download or read book Favorite Recipes of My Mother and Grandmothers written by Renate Becker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cookbook was assembled for my children. My old Davidis cookbook is printed in German Fraktur font, the pages have yellowed, and the terms are often hard to understand even in modern German. The recipes I selected were used in my home. Most of the instructions in this cookbook were listed for households that had several kitchen helpers, and they had to prepare the meals from butchering a rabbit, chicken, and deer. It contains social-etiquette suggestions in regard to entertaining tea parties, dances, and great dinners. It lists menus for every day of the year, a simple table, and a rich table. These instructions were for us children great reading and amusement. However, I can find our recipes easily by the smudged and dog-eared pages. My grandparents had no kitchen helpers. They were of the class of industrial workers. Everyone worked physically hard and needed good nourishment. Both families valued good-quality meals. To celebrate holidays, special dishes and cakes were a custom. And these are the traditional cakes that I introduced. The sauerbraten is the Christmas roast, the stollen is the Christmas bread, and best of all, goodies are the spiced cookies. In my household, I treasure the simple cooking utensils, dishes, and tablecloth handmade by my mother. Many items are still from the households of my grandmothers, therefore Rhenish pottery. I hope to give a sense of this tradition of a Rhenish household from the 1900s to our modern families.

Book excerpt: A new cookbook from the best-selling and award-winning author that uses recipes to look back at her life and family history—and at her personal journey discovering Jewish cuisine from around the world "There is no greater authority on Jewish cooking than Joan Nathan." —Michael Solomonov, James Beard award-winning chef and author of Zahav Before hummus was available in every grocery store—before shakshuka was a dish on every brunch menu—Joan Nathan taught home cooks how and why they should make these now-beloved staples themselves. Here, in her most personal book yet, the beloved authority on global Jewish cuisine uses recipes looks back at her own family’s history— their arrival in America from Germany; her childhood in postwar New York and Rhode Island; her years in Paris, New York, Israel, and Washington, DC. Nathan shares her story—of marriage, motherhood, and a career as a food writer; of a life well-lived and centered around meals—and she punctuates it with all the foods she has come to love. With over 100 recipes from roast chicken to rugelach, from matzoh ball soup to challah and brisket, here are updated versions of her favorites. But here too are new favorites: Salmon with Preserved Lemon and Za’atar; Fragrant Spiced Chicken with Rice, Eggplant, Peppers, and Zucchini; Mahammar (a Syrian pepper, pomegranate and walnut dip); Moroccan Chicken with Almonds, Cinnamon and Couscous; Joan’s version of the perfect Black and White Cookies. This is a treasury of recipes and stories—and an invitation to a seat at Nathan's table.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of our most cherished memories are of visits to Grandma's house...and the wonderful meals she cooked for us. When she called us down for breakfast, we knew there would be homemade caramel rolls and hot cocoa waiting, just for us. In chilly weather, there was always a hearty kettle of vegetable soup or chili simmering on her stove. At dinnertime, the table overflowed with tender chicken and noodles or slow-baked pot roast, buttery mashed potatoes, brown sugar carrots (because she knew we wouldn't eat them, otherwise!) and salads, fresh-picked from her garden. Her cookie jar was filled with our favorite snickerdoodles or chocolate chip cookies, and there was always a frosted layer cake in the cake stand. So many delicious memories! From Grandma's Recipe Box is chock-full of all these recipes and more, shared by cooks like you, handed down through generations and still enjoyed today. We've included easy tips for adding down-home flavor to meals, and for making get-togethers with family & friends special. If you enjoy old-fashioned comfort food, you'll love the recipes in this cookbook! 225 Recipes

Book Literary Gems

Download or read book Literary Gems written by Lydia Bongcaron Wade and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the contents of this book are jokes, short stories, essays, dialogues, and poetry. They are original literary pieces, written and compiled by the author over the years. The quotations, sayings and words of wisdom that appear in the latter part of the book are works of renowned authors, poets, and philosophers of all time. Their writings are timeless, and the writers, universally acclaimed. They had been gathered and kept by the author since she was in her teens. She had since considered these writings her treasures or gems. These works of great literary geniuses who were prominent and outstanding in their era, had impressed and left imprints on the author so much that she aspired to become a writer one day. The ambition was finally realized decades later. On the whole, the book contains a variety of fiction and non-fiction literary pieces, intended to offer the reader variations in type, style, content and organization that a novel or piece of literature with a single plot is not able to provide. The continuous flow of the same idea or plot in a novel can sometimes bore the reader. Variety is the spice of life, so it was said. Variety in the taste, flavor and appearance of food can enhance the appetite of even the most picky eater. In a similar vein, variety as those offered in this collection offers changes in mood, line of thoughts and feelings of the reader and cuts or minimizes monotony. So I hope! May the reader find this collection funny and enjoyable, informative, and nourishing food for the mind and the soul.

Book Food That Makes You Feel Good

Download or read book Food That Makes You Feel Good written by The Seven Rainbows and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-09-11 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this cookbook is to encourage our readers how to prepare tasty meals for family and friends. The year of 2010, the Lord appeared to me in a vision. In this vision, He instructed me to study different recipes and compile into a cookbook and, thus, choose seven people as coauthors to begin this assignment. He gave me the name of our group, The Seven Rainbows. It took spiritual strength to fulfill this assignment. However, our goal is to serve and make our recipes a message that all may enjoy cooking and experiencing. The Seven Rainbows created the recipes out of love, most of them from relatives and friends. Therefore, with passion we provide these tasty recipes to everyone. One of the unique challenges of our compiling our recipes was to develop meals that are tasty and beautiful as well as healthy. Are you willing to try these delicious recipes?
