Book Security Mom

Download or read book Security Mom written by Juliette Kayyem and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In “a lively debut…[with] plenty of enthusiastic ‘can-do’ advice” (Publishers Weekly), a Homeland Security advisor and a Pulitzer Prize–nominated columnist—and mother of three—delivers a timely message about American security: it begins at home. Soccer Moms are so last decade. Juliette Kayyem is a “Security Mom.” At once a national security expert who worked at the highest levels of government, and also a mom of three, she’s lived it all—from anthrax to lice to the BP oil spill—and now she tells it all with her unique voice of reason, experience, and humility. Weaving her personal story of marriage and motherhood into a fast-paced account of managing the nation’s most perilous disasters, Juliette recounts the milestones that mark the path of her unpredictable, daring, funny, and ultimately relatable life. Security Mom is modern tale about the highs and lows of having-it-all parenthood and a candid, sometimes shocking, behind-the-scenes look inside the high-stakes world of national security. In her signature refreshing style, Juliette reveals how she came to learn that homeland security is not simply about tragedy and terror; it is about us as parents and neighbors, and what we can do every day to keep each other strong and safe. From stocking up on coloring books to stashing duplicate copies of valuable papers out of state, Juliette’s wisdom does more than just prepare us to survive in an age of mayhem—it empowers us to thrive. “You got this,” Juliette tells her readers, providing accessible advice about how we all can better prepare ourselves for a world of risks.

Book excerpt: A New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller “This character-driven romance will enthrall [Rivers’s] many fans.” —Library Journal The New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece. A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want—money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist—an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison. Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship—and both their lives—forever. “Rivers deftly threads Roman’s and Grace’s lives together as they tiptoe around their emotional scars, eventually shifting into a dance of tentative steps toward a love neither can resist. Fans of Christian romance will delight in this tale of salvation through love.” —Kirkus Reviews “Richly detailed characters with traumatic pasts are woven together with biblical truths and redemptive themes. . . . This is an amazing, beautifully written tale to be savored and pondered and shared with others.” —Romantic Times “Readers will marvel at Rivers’s storytelling arc encompassing the reconciliation of gritty past misdeeds and the work in progress of a life of forgiveness.” —Booklist “Fans of Francine Rivers will eagerly devour The Masterpiece and find exactly what they are looking for: a beautifully written story of faith, romance, and the power that true freedom can bring.” —Bookreporter

Book Moms Are the Ceo s of Life

Download or read book Moms Are the Ceo s of Life written by Eugene Quinn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many books are coming out today about different ways of running companies. Several of these books envision some historical figure as the CEO: Lincoln, Attila the Hun, Jesus and others. Only one person is CEO to everyone, and that is our mother. Everyone is molded by the teaching of their mother, and taught the same things that they later apply to their business career. I had the pleasure of interviewing many successful people for the book, Don Kirshner, Ken Anderson and Jeff Webb, just to name a few, and found that they all had a lot in common: first they have a passion for what they do; have a purpose to succeed; moved ahead with total determination; but first and foremost they owe their success to the role their mother played in shaping their respective lives. Each chapter of the book is a lesson my mother taught me while I was growing up. They are the same ones all children hear from their own mother. The first part of each chapter tells the story of how I learned one of my own mother's lessons. Most people who read them will see themselves, since all children go through many of the same trials and tribulations. The second part of each chapter relates to a specific individual who used their mother's lessons to be successful in their chosen field. Some are funny, some are sad; but all are about life...and all true. Having interviewed each of these people for the book, I wish I could show the raw emotion on each person's face while relating what their mother meant to their individual success. I hope everyone takes away from this book that success is not easy, but everyone receives the seeds for their success from their mother.

Book excerpt: This book is about a loving and warm family who made their home in the area of Tumbling Creek, Virginia in the early 1900s. It brings to life an era long ago, when there was time for porch sitting and visiting with neighbors. When molasses making and taffy pulling parties were the social functions. Ben Jensen was very strict in his ways. He was compassionate toward his family, especially his lovely daughters, Katie and Dolly. Mammy Belle and Daddy Jensen raised their children in the ways of the Lord, with church attendance a priority in their lives. One spring day while picking strawberries in the meadow below their home, Katie and Dolly Jensen had their first glimpse of the two brothers, Seth and Tom Hankins, who were fishing in the creek nearby. They didn't know that this day they had come face to face with their destiny. Three years passed, with only vague memories of the two brothers. Life continued on Tumbling Creek, and Katie and Dolly grew into beautiful young ladies. They often wondered what became of the two brothers they had seen fishing on that long ago spring day. Mammy Belle was shopping at the local general store, and she heard the news that the two brothers had returned from their three year journey across Clinch mountain where they had been employed on a cattle farm. Katie and Dolly could hardly contain their excitement. Soon romance blossomed, and life was never the same again. Follow Katie and Dolly as they face great challenges while maturing iinto womanhood. Rejoice with them when they find true love, and cry with them when tragedy strikes in the lives of each. This is a work of fiction with historical facts added in certain circumstances. Book excerpt: With wry wit and touching humor, Louie Anderson, New York Times bestselling author and Emmy Award–winning comedian currently starring in Zach Galifianakis’s Baskets, shares his journey of turning life’s challenges into joy, as well as plenty of wisdom he’s still discovering from his late mother. “I started out writing these letters to my mom, but a few friends said I should write a book. I said ‘okay’ because next to ‘we’ll see,’ ‘okay’ is as non-committal as you can get. But somehow, I stuck with it. I hope you like it. I hope that after you read it, you’ll write or call your own mom—and dad, sister, brother, cousin, nephew. Or have lunch with them. Or breakfast. It doesn’t have to be lunch. But do it now. Don’t wait like I did.” —Louie Louie Anderson has channeled his beloved mom, Ora Zella Anderson, in his stand-up routine for decades, but she died before seeing him reach his greatest heights, culminating in his breakout TV role as Christine Baskets, the mesmerizing character she inspired. Hey Mom is Louie’s way of catching her up on the triumphs, disappointments, and continuing challenges in life. Full of heartache, but also great hope, and of course—given Louie’s inimitable comedic voice—laugh-out-loud stories and his trademark observations on life’s many absurdities, Hey Mom shows a poignant side of Louie you may not know, and proves that he is one of the most nuanced and wide-ranging comics working today.
