Book Radiation Effects on Molybdenum Alloys Bombarded by Electrons in a High Voltage Electron Microscope

Download or read book Radiation Effects on Molybdenum Alloys Bombarded by Electrons in a High Voltage Electron Microscope written by N. Igata and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to clarify the dislocation loop formation and the subsequent void swelling and also to reconsider the use of the high-voltage electron microscope (HVEM) as simulation study for neutron or other particle irradiation. In situ observation of damage processes in molybdenum carbon alloys was performed by HVEM in the temperature range between 300 and 1300 K with the dose level up to 10 displacements per atom (dpa). Dislocation loop density was observed as the function of irradiation temperature. Below 500 K the density was interpreted to mean that the nuclei for interstitial clusters are di-interstitials. Above 500 K, however the instability of the interstitial clusters was observed. The dislocation loop formation and the succeeding dislocation behavior were observed above 1000 K and four stages were observed. Void swelling was observed after the dislocation density reached steady state. The effect of the surface on dislocation behavior was found to be very important. The void swelling was proportional to the third power of irradiation time, similar to other irradiation data.

Book Radiation Damage and Thermal Annealing of Defects in Molybdenum and Tungsten

Download or read book Radiation Damage and Thermal Annealing of Defects in Molybdenum and Tungsten written by A. N. Ivanov and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage to high temperature metal homologues of molybdenum and tungsten as a function of dose and the reactor irradiation temperature is investigated. The studies were conducted with polycrystalline specimens 99.9 percent pure in the case of molybdenum and 99.85 percent in the case of tungsten. Variation if the specific electric resistance was used as a measure of the radiation damage. The saturation effect of the radiation damage and the differences observed between the behavior of molybdenum and tungsten are discussed from the standpoint of the thermal stability of the radiation defects formed in them. The part played by radiation alloying when tungsten is irradiated with large thermal neutron doses is also discussed. A study is made of the thermal annealing of radiation defects in molybdenum and tungsten subjected to various irradiation doses at temperatures above room temperature. The similarity between the three recovery stages in the increase in specific electric resistance, observed during annealing in these metals, and the nature of the defects responsible for the recovery stages are discussed. The variation in fine crystal structure for molybdenum and tungsten during reactor irradiation and subsequent annealing is investigated. (Author).

Book Medical Isotope Production Without Highly Enriched Uranium

Download or read book Medical Isotope Production Without Highly Enriched Uranium written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-06-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of a congressionally mandated study to examine the feasibility of eliminating the use of highly enriched uranium (HEU2) in reactor fuel, reactor targets, and medical isotope production facilities. The book focuses primarily on the use of HEU for the production of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), whose decay product, technetium-99m3 (Tc-99m), is used in the majority of medical diagnostic imaging procedures in the United States, and secondarily on the use of HEU for research and test reactor fuel. The supply of Mo-99 in the U.S. is likely to be unreliable until newer production sources come online. The reliability of the current supply system is an important medical isotope concern; this book concludes that achieving a cost difference of less than 10 percent in facilities that will need to convert from HEU- to LEU-based Mo-99 production is much less important than is reliability of supply.

Book Radiation induced Segregation and Precipitation in Molybdenum rhenium Alloys

Download or read book Radiation induced Segregation and Precipitation in Molybdenum rhenium Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specimens of Mo-7 at. % Re and Mo-30 at. % Re were irradiated with 1.8 MeV 4He ions at elevated temperatures. Radiation-induced segregation of Re was measured during irradiation by in situ Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Segregation of the undersized Re atoms in the same direction as the defect fluxes, i.e., toward the external surface, was observed. The amount of Re enrichment in the near-surface region was measured as a function of temperature and of dose at a calculated near-surface displacement rate near 1 x 10−4dpa/s. Segregation was observed at temperatures from 800 to 1500°C in Mo-7Re, and from 850 to 1225°C in Mo-30Re. Irradiated disks were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Precipitates of Chi phase were observed on grain boundaries, or in a thin layer at the irradiated surface in Mo-30Re after irradiation at temperatures from 750 to 1075°C. Frequently, Chi precipitates formed with a crystallographic twin orientation with respect to the host matrix. No voids were observed for doses up to 1.6 dpa.
