Book Distribution of Mollusk Shells in the Sediments of Florida Bay Classic Reprint

Download or read book Distribution of Mollusk Shells in the Sediments of Florida Bay Classic Reprint written by Alan B. Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Distribution of Mollusk Shells in the Sediments of Florida Bay Only the Pelecypoda and Gastropoda met all of our requirements. Chitons and scaphopods are not widely enough distributed to be of use in the field, but, being mollusks, they have been included in the statistical samples. The pioneering work of Turney, done in 1958 and published in 1972 (turney and Perkins, showed that the clams and snails are distributed in an understandable manner. The present study extends and refines the basic patterns recognized by Turney. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Distribution of Mollusk Shells in the Sediments of Florida Bay

Download or read book Distribution of Mollusk Shells in the Sediments of Florida Bay written by Alan B. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of the shells of 336 taxa of gastopod and pelecypod mollusks in sediments of Florida Bay is described, based on analysis of 321 samples (containing more than 540,000 individual specimens) collected between 1964 and 1983. These data were collected to determine biogacies as defined by shells enclosed in carbonate sediments as a means for solving geologic problems of petroleum exploration. Taxa used are not directly comparable to Linnaean taxa, but rather are operationally-defined for recognition by non-specialists. Dominance of samples by a few taxa made it possible to identify biofacies in the field. The composition and geographic distribution of the resulting 14 biogacies are summarized. All of the project's data are presented on the accompanying CD-ROM.

Book Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas

Download or read book Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas written by Edward J. Petuch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas: Their Ecology and Biodiversity is the first comprehensive overview of the ecology and biodiversity of the phylum Mollusca in the area of Florida extending from the Dry Tortugas and Ten Thousand Islands in the west to Palm Beach in the east. The book provides detailed analyses of molluscan faunas found in 20 different ecosystems, emphasizing the marine environments of the Florida Keys archipelago and its extensive coral reef tracts. Full-page color illustrations portray living animals, unique Keys environments, underwater ecosystems, and satellite images. More than 1,200 species of macromollusks—in 86 gastropod families and 54 bivalve families—are recorded from the study area, with color plates illustrating over 550 of the region’s most ecologically important species. For the first time in any book on the malacology of the Florida Keys area, the 20 marine ecosystems and their associated molluscan assemblages are arranged by the CMECS (Coastal Marine Ecological Classification Standard) system. This system emphasizes the hierarchical relationships determined by substrate type, bathymetry, and water chemistry. Along with complete species lists for every molluscan assemblage, this handy guide introduces ten newly-discovered gastropods, including new species in the families Muricidae, Buccinidae, Nassariidae, Naticidae, Turritellidae, and Olividae. Two new bivalves in the families Pectinidae and Arcidae are also described in a special systematic appendix. This richly illustrated book is written for the professional scientific audience interested in mollusks, marine ecology, evolution, and taxonomy as well as malacologists, naturalists, and shell collectors. It is also an ideal synoptic field guide, showing where individual species of mollusks can be found and within which ecosystems they occur.

Download or read book Seashells of Southern Florida written by Paula M. Mikkelsen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 947 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located where the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea converge, the Florida Keys are distinctive for their rich and varied marine fauna. The Keys are home to nearly sixty taxonomic families of bivalves such as clams and mussels--roughly half the world's bivalve family diversity. The first in a series of three volumes on the molluscan fauna of the Keys and adjacent regions, Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves provides a comprehensive treatment of these bivalves, and also serves as a comparative anatomical guide to bivalve diversity worldwide. Paula Mikkelsen and Rüdiger Bieler cover more than three hundred species of bivalves, including clams, scallops, oysters, mussels, shipworms, jewel boxes, tellins, and many lesser-known groups. For each family they select an exemplar species and illustrate its shell and anatomical features in detail. They describe habitat and other relevant information, and accompany each species account with high-resolution shell photographs of other family members. Text and images combine to present species--to family-level characteristics in a complete way never before seen. The book includes fifteen hundred mostly color photographs and images of shells, underwater habitats, bivalves in situ, original anatomical and hinge drawings, scanning electron micrographs, and unique transparent--shell illustrations with major organ systems color-coded and clearly shown. Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves is the most complete guide to subtropical bivalves available. It is an essential tool for students and teachers of molluscan diversity and systematics, and an indispensable identification guide for collectors, scuba divers, naturalists, environmental consultants, and natural-resource managers.

Book excerpt: In its third edition, this praised book demonstrates how the living systems modeling of aquatic ecosystems for ecological, biological and physiological research, and ecosystem restoration can produce answers to very complex ecological questions. Dynamic Aquaria further offers an understanding developed in 25 years of living ecosystem modeling and discusses how this knowledge has produced methods of efficiently solving many environmental problems. Public education through this methodology is the additional key to the broader ecosystem understanding necessary to allow human society to pass through the next evolutionary bottleneck of our species. Living systems modeling as a wide spectrum educational tool can provide a primary vehicle for that essential step. This third editon covers the many technological and biological developments in the eight plus years since the second edition, providing updated technological advice and describing many new example aquarium environments. - Includes 16 page color insert with 57 color plates and 25% new photographs - Offers 300 figures and 75 tables - New chapter on Biogeography - Over 50% new research in various chapters - Significant updates in chapters include: - The understanding of coral reef function especially the relationship between photosynthesis and calcification - The use of living system models to solve problems of biogeography and the geographic dispersal and interaction of species populations - The development of new techniques for global scale restoration of water and atmosphere - The development of new techniques for closed system, sustainable aquaculture
