This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Molecules and the Molecular Theory of Matter Throughout this volume I have considered molecules in' their physical aspect. There are numerous excellent works that discuss the chemical aspect of the molecular theory satisfactorily, of which the following may be particularly recommended: Meyer's Modern Theories of Chemistry, Rem sen's Theoretical Chemistry, Ostwald's Outlines of General Chemistry, and Mendeleiefi's Principles of Chemistry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Molecules and the Molecular Theory of Matter In the multiplication of popular books on scientific subjects, the molecular theory of matter appears to have been strangely neglected. None of the works available to American readers pretend to give a complete, connected account of what is known of the constitution of matter, and the student who wishes to learn the present state of the molecular theory has to seek his information in the occasional articles that are scattered through the scientific journals. Dr. Watson's Kinetic Theory of Oases (a new edition of which has been recently published) is far too difficult for the undergraduates in our scientific schools and colleges j Clausius'B Kinetitche Theorie der Qase (1889-91) has not yet been translated, nor has Meyer's Kinetitche Theorie der Gate, so far as I am aware. Meyer's book is also out of print at present, although a new edition is in preparation. Lord Kelvin's delightful lecture on The Size of Atoms should be read by all students of physics,-and it is now readily available, in the first volume of his Popular Lectures and Addresses. Crookes's classical papers on radiant matter should also be read; they are in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, beginning with the year 1874. The present volume is an attempt to elucidate the elements of the molecular theory of matter as it is held to-day. It is based on a lecture delivered on the 12th of last February, before the Washburn Engineering Society, of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In preparing the manuscript for the printer a considerable number of alterations liavo been made, and much new material has been added, though the form of presentation has been preserved. Book excerpt: This wonderful book was used as a textbook in schools for many years as an introduction to chemistry and atoms. In a wonderfully easy to understand manner it takes the reader from the basic states of matter right through to how molecules are composed, how elements combine to make compounds, what's in an atom, and so much more. This edition is presented in full color with all of the original interior illustrations.

Book Foundations of the Molecular Theory Classic Reprint

Download or read book Foundations of the Molecular Theory Classic Reprint written by John Dalton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of the Molecular Theory The papers here reprinted in chronological order serve to exhibit the historical development of the idea of a connection existing between the number of particles in different gases and the volume the occupy. It will be seen that Dalton from the first entertains the notion that equal volumes of different gases may contain the same number of ultimate particles at equal temperature and pressure, but that he is legitimately forced to reject this assumption, - conceiving no distinction between the atom and the molecule of an element. Gay-Lussac's important experimental work on the combining volumes of gases then shows the necessity of a simple relation between the ultimate particles of gases and their volumes, although he does not point this out in his paper. Dalton, however, perceives the necessity, and characteristically concludes by doubting the accuracy of Gay-Lussac's experiments. Avogadro, finally, accepts both Dalton's theory and Gay-Lussac's data, and teaches how to reconcile them by distinguishing between the atom and the molecule of an elementary gas. It has not been thought necessary to reprint the letter of Ampere to Berthollet (Annales de Chimie, 90, 43-86, 1814), since that paper contains no advance on the views of Avogadro published three years earlier, its author simply drawing the same conclusions from the same premises. The English version of the French originals will probably be found more faithful than elegant, especially so in the case of Avogadro's paper, where the French is always clumsy and occasionally obscure. Book A Kinetic Theory of Gases and Liquids

Download or read book A Kinetic Theory of Gases and Liquids written by Richard D. Kleeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Kinetic Theory of Gases and Liquids The object of writing this book is to formulate a Kinetic Theory of certain properties of matter, which shall apply equally well to matter in any state. The desirability of such a development need not be emphasized. The difficulty hitherto experienced in applying the results obtained in the case of the Kinetic Theory of Gases in the well-known form to liquids and intermediary states of matter has been primarily due to the difficulty of properly interpreting molecular interaction. In the case of gases this difficulty is in most part overcome by the introduction of the assumption that a molecule consists of a perfectly elastic sphere not surrounded by any field of force. But since such a state of affairs does not exist, the results obtained in the case of gases hold only in a general way, and the numerical constants involved are therefore of an indefinite nature, while in the case of dense gases and liquids this procedure does not lead to anything that is of use in explaining the facts. Instead of an atom, or molecule, consisting of a perfectly elastic sphere, it is more likely that each may be regarded simply as a center of forces of attraction and Repulsion. If the exact nature of the field of force surrounding atoms and molecules were known, it would be a definite mathematical problem to determine the resulting properties of matter. But our knowledge in this connection is at present not sufficiently extensive to permit a development of the subject along these lines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corpuscular Theory of Matter In Chapter VII. I give reasons for thinking that the number of corpuscles in an atom of an element is not greatly in excess of the atomic weight of the element, thus in particular that the number of corpuscles in an atom of hydrogen is not large. Some writers seem to think that this makes the conception of the model atom more difficult. I am unable to follow this view; it seems to me to make the conception easier, since it makes the number of possible atoms much more nearly equal to the number of the chemical elements. It has, however, an important bearing on our conception of the origin of the mass of the atom, as if the number of corpuscles in the atom is of the same order as the atomic weight we cannot regard the mass of an atom as mainly or even appreciably due to the mass of the corpuscles. I am indebted to Mr. G. W. C. Kave for assisting in revising the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
