Book The Molecular Dynamics of Liquid Crystals

Download or read book The Molecular Dynamics of Liquid Crystals written by G.R. Luckhurst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid-crystalline phases are now known to be formed by an ever growing range of quite diverse materials, these include those of low molecular weight as well as the novel liquid-crystalline polymers, such phases can also be induced by the addition of a solvent to amphiphilic systems leading to lyotropic liquid crystals. Irrespective of the structure of the constituent molecules these numerous liquid-cl)'Stailine phases are characterised by their long range orientational order. In addition certain phases exhibit elements of long range positional order. Our understanding, both experimental and theoretical, at the molecular level of the static behaviour of these fascinating and important materials is now well advanced. In contrast the influence of the long range order; both orientational and positional, on the molecular dynamics in liquid Cl)'Stais is less well understood. In an attempt to address this situation a NATO Advanced Study Institute devoted to liquid ctystal dynamics was held at n Ciocco, Barga, Italy in September 1989. This brought together experimentalists and theoreticians concerned with the various dynamical processes occurring in all liquid crystals. The skills of the participants was impressively wide ranging; they spanned the experimental techniques used in the study of molecular dynamics, the nature of the systems investigated and the theoretical models employed to understand the results. While much was learnt it was also recognised that much more needed to be done in order to advance our understanding of molecular dynamics in liquid Cl)'Stais.

Book Molecular Simulation of Fluids

Download or read book Molecular Simulation of Fluids written by Richard J. Sadus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-09-16 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular simulation allows researchers unique insight into the structures and interactions at play in fluids. Since publication of the first edition of Molecular Simulation of Fluids, novel developments in theory, algorithms and computer hardware have generated enormous growth in simulation capabilities. This 2nd edition has been fully updated and expanded to highlight this recent progress, encompassing both Monte Carlo and molecular dynamic techniques, and providing details of theory, algorithms and both serial and parallel implementations. Beginning with a clear introduction and review of theoretical foundations, the book goes on to explore intermolecular potentials before discussing the calculation of molecular interactions in more detail. Monte Carlo simulation and integrators for molecular dynamics are then discussed further, followed by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics and molecular simulation of ensembles and phase equilibria. The use of object-orientation is examined in detail, with working examples coded in C++. Finally, practical parallel simulation algorithms are discussed using both MPI and GPUs, with the latter coded in CUDA. Drawing on the extensive experience of its expert author, Molecular Simulation of Fluids: Theory, Algorithms, Object-Orientation, and Parallel Computing 2nd Edition is a practical, accessible guide to this complex topic for all those currently using, or interested in using, molecular simulation to study fluids. Fully updated and revised to reflect advances in the field, including new chapters on intermolecular potentials and parallel algorithms Covers the application of both MPI and GPU programming to molecular simulation Covers a wide range of simulation topics using both Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics approaches Provides access to downloadable simulation code, including GPU code using CUDA, to encourage practice and support learning

Book Equilibrium Statistical Physics

Download or read book Equilibrium Statistical Physics written by M. Baus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook which gradually introduces the student to the statistical mechanical study of the different phases of matter and to the phase transitions between them. Throughout, only simple models of both ordinary and soft matter are used but these are studied in full detail. The subject is developed in a pedagogical manner, starting from the basics, going from the simple ideal systems to the interacting systems, and ending with the more modern topics. The textbook provides the student with a complete overview, intentionally at an introductory level, of the theory of phase transitions. All equations and deductions are included.

This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard spheres and related objects (hard disks and mixtures of hard systems) are paradigmatic systems: indeed, they have served as a basis for the theoretical and numerical development of a number of fields, such as general liquids and fluids, amorphous solids, liquid crystals, colloids and granular matter, to name but a few. The present volume introduces and reviews some important basics and progress in the study of such systems. Their structure, thermodynamic properties, equations of state, as well as kinetic and transport properties are considered from different and complementary points of view. This book addresses graduate students, lecturers as well as researchers in statistical mechanics, physics of liquids, physical chemistry and chemical engineering.

Book Soft Matter Self assembly

Download or read book Soft Matter Self assembly written by C. N. Likos and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-assembly is one of the key concepts in contemporary soft condensed matter. It is an umbrella term which encompasses the various modes of spontaneous organization of micrometer-and submicrometer-sized particles into ordered structures of various degrees of complexity, yet it often relies on remarkably simple interactions and mechanisms. Self-assembly is one of the key principles used by nature to construct living matter, where it frequently takes place in a hierarchical fashion. This book contains the lectures from the Enrico Fermi summer school: Soft Matter Self-assembly, held in Varenna, Italy, in June and July 2015. The primary aim of the school was to cover the most exciting modern aspects of self-assembly in soft condensed matter physics, and to enable Ph.D. students and postdocs to engage with some of the most exciting and current topics in the physics of colloids through a series of mini-courses and seminars hosted by leading figures in the field.Subjects covered include: colloids with directional bonding; pathways of self-organization; self-assembly hydrodynamics; polymer structure and dynamics; liquid-crystal colloid dispersions; and self-organizing nanosystems. The proceedings also include two reprints from Reviews of Modern Physics, and will be of interest to both students and experts in the field.

Download or read book Granular Matter written by Anita Mehta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powders have been studied extensively because they arise in a wide variety of fields, ranging from soil mechanics to manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Only recently, however, with the deepening understanding of fractals, chaos, 1/f noise, and self-organization, has it been useful to study the mechanical properties of powders from a fundamental physical perspective. This book collects articles by some of the foremost researchers in the field, including chapters on: the role of entropy in the specification of a powder, by S.F. Edwards (Cambridge); discrete mechanics, by P.K. Haff (Duke); computer simulations of granular materials, by G.C. Barker (Norwich); pattern formation and complexity in granular flow, by R.P. Behringer and G.W. Baxter (Duke); avalanches in real sand piles, by A. Mehta (Birmingham); micromechanical models of failure, by M.J. Adams (Unilever) and B.J. Briscoe (Imperial College); mixing and segregation in particle flows, by J. Bridgwater (Birmingham); and hard-sphere colloidal suspensions, by P. Bartlett (Bristol) and W. van Megen (Melbourne).

Book Surface Tension in Microsystems

Download or read book Surface Tension in Microsystems written by Pierre Lambert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how surface tension effects can be used by engineers to provide mechanical functions in miniaturized products (1 mm). Even if precursors of this field such as Jurin or Laplace already date back to the 18th century, describing surface tension effects from a mechanical perspective is very recent.brThe originality of this book is to consider the effects of capillary bridges on solids, including forces and torques exerted both statically and dynamically by the liquid along the 6 degrees-of-freedom.brIt provides a comprehensive approach to various applications, such as capillary adhesion (axial force), centering force in packaging and micro-assembly (lateral force) and recent developments such as a capillary motor (torque).
