Download or read book Steroid Hormone Resistance written by George P. Chrousos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first attempt to present in one place the clinical syndromes and the pathophysiologic basis for the "resistance states" to each of the classes of steroid hormones. Glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, estrogens, progesterone and vitamin D have widely diverse roles ranging from the control of homeostasis to reproduction and bone formation. They are similar in that they share a chemical structure and that their action is in the cell nucleus where they induce transcription of specific genes leading to synthesis of function-specific proteins. Clinical syndromes of steroid hormone resistance to androgens (complete and partial testicular feminization), aldosterone (pseudo hypoaldosteronism) and vitamin D (vitamin D-dependent rickets type II) have been known for many years. Progesterone and glucocorticoid resistance syndromes have been described only recently. Resistance to estrogens has not been reported in man or in animals. It is hoped that a detailed reexamination of what is known about each of these conditions at the clinical and molecular levels will enhance our understanding of the function of these hormones and their mechanisms of action. New insight and research initiatives should result. G.P. Chrousos D.L. Loriaus M.B. Lipsett vii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The contents of this volume are based in part on the proceedings of an International Conference held in Bethesda in the summer of 1984. This conference was sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, Maryland.

Download or read book Human Genome Methods written by Kenneth W. Adolph and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Genome Methods is a practical guide to the application of molecular biology and genetics techniques to research on human cells. Written by recognized authorities who often originated the techniques described, chapters present experimental protocols that are readily used at the laboratory bench. The step-by-step protocols are concise and easy to follow to be reproducible by researchers of various levels of expertise. Suggestions for successful application of procedures are included, along with recommended materials and suppliers. Helpful background information and results of applying the methods described are also given. Section I covers topics such as microsatellite DNA, dynamic mutations, gene targeting using the DNA triple helix, and protease footprinting of DNA-protein interactions. This is followed in Section II by discussions of in situ hybridization, cell synchronization, and cell cycle specific gene expression. Methods concerned with programmed cell death are explored in Section III, which covers this emerging research area and the culture and analysis of cancer cells. Section IV presents methods related to transgene analysis of mouse embryonic stem cells, generation and knockout studies with null mutant mice, and mouse models for human disease. The final section reviews genome mapping, with an emphasis on the construction of linkage maps and on somatic cell hybrids for mapping disease genes.

This collection of articles investigates the field of VDJ recombination, the Ku Autoantigen, diseases that impact on VDJ recombination, the evolution of antigen recognition molecules, the use of intravenous immunoglobulin in human immunotherapy, and rheumatoid factors produced in rheumatoid arthritis patients that may indicate a pathogenetic predisposition. Exciting, innovative technological developments used for exploring new areas of study and medical applications are also covered. Traditional aspects of the field are revisited so that relevant information and concepts are maintained as a point of reference to more modern aspects.
