Book Gene Therapy of the Central Nervous System From Bench to Bedside

Download or read book Gene Therapy of the Central Nervous System From Bench to Bedside written by Michael G. Kaplitt and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few areas of biomedical research provide greater opportunities to capitalize upon the revolution in genomics and molecular biology than gene therapy. This is particularly true for the brain and nervous system, where gene transfer has become a key technology for basic research and has recently been translated to human therapy in several landmark clinical trials. Gene Therapy in the Brain: From Bench to Bedside represents the definitive volume on this subject. Edited by two pioneers of neurological gene therapy, this volume contains contributions by leaders who helped to create the field as well as those who are expanding the promise of gene therapy for the future of basic and clinical neuroscience. Drawing upon this extensive collective experience, this book provides clear and informative reviews on a variety of subjects which would be of interest to anyone who is currently using or contemplating exploring gene therapy for neurobiological applications. Basic gene transfer technologies are discussed, with particular emphases upon novel vehicles, immunological issues and the role of gene therapy in stem cells. Numerous research applications are reviewed, particularly in complex fields such as behavioral neurobiology. Several preclinical areas are also covered which are likely to translate into clinical studies in the near future, including epilepsy, pain and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Among the most exciting advances in recent years has been the use of neurological gene therapy in human clinical trials, including Parkinson's disease, Canavan disease and Batten disease. Finally, readers will find "insider" information on technological and regulatory issues which can often limit effective translation of even the most promising idea into clinical use. This work provides up-to-date information and key insights into those gene therapy issues which are important to both scientists and clinicians focusing upon the brain and central nervous system.

Book Molecular Neuro oncology and Its Impact on the Clinical Management of Brain Tumors

Download or read book Molecular Neuro oncology and Its Impact on the Clinical Management of Brain Tumors written by O.D. Wiestler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tumors of the nervous system represent a difficult therapeutic challenge. During recent years, substantial progress has been made in characterizing genetic mechnisms involved in the formation of brain tumors. There is a lot of hope that an understanding of the molecular basis of transformation will eventually lead to specific therapeutic approaches. In this volume, leading authorities in both molecular and clinical neuro-oncology summarize recent developments in their respective fields. The first part of the book will focus on specific molecular genetic defects in neural tumors and their potential clinical significance. Part two gives an update on established and novel treatment regimens for patients with brain tumors. Several contributions will demonstrate that molecular and clinical neuro-oncology are already entangled. With its unique combination of molecular biological and clinical data, this volume provides basic researchers and clinical neuroscientists with a comprehensive update in both disciplines.

  • Pages : 494 pages

Download or read book Brain Tumor Invasion written by Tom Mikkelsen and published by Wiley-Liss. This book was released on 1998-05-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain Tumor Invasion Biological, Clinical, and Therapeutic Considerations Edited by Tom Mikkelsen Rolf Bjerkvig Ole Didrik Laerum Mark L. Rosenblum Recent advances in molecular biology have given us profound new insights into the behavior of primary brain tumors. Not only are such tumors more diffuse in their infiltration of brain tissue and therefore less amenable to surgery than brain tumors originating elsewhere in the body—it now appears that the central nervous system and the normal brain itself constitute a biological environment conducive to the uncontrolled spread of primary tumors. Brain Tumor Invasion is the first comprehensive reference devoted to the invasive behavior of primary brain tumors. It examines the biological mechanisms responsible for the increased ability of gliomas to metastasize in the central nervous system, and discusses the role of chemical carcinogens, growth factors, oncogenes, and tumor suppressors in the progression of such metastases. This book surveys the latest research in the field, reviews present and future prospects of anti-invasive brain tumor therapy, and even translates preclinical trials and other research results into potential new therapies. The material is divided into five main categories: Developmental biology and molecular neuro-oncology Pathological and clinical features of malignant brain tumors Models for the study of brain tumor invasion in vivo and in vitro Mechanisms of invasion New therapeutic strategies Brain Tumor Invasion offers dozens of maps and photographs that illustrate topics under discussion. This in-depth introduction to one of the most difficult problems in the management of brain tumors is indispensable to neuro-oncologists involved in brain tumor research and therapy. It is also useful to researchers in cancer biology, neuroscience, cell biology, and molecular genetics.

Book Human Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors From Bench to Bedside Volume 2

Download or read book Human Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors From Bench to Bedside Volume 2 written by Nima Rezaei and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to gather the current knowledge regarding different aspects of brain and spinal cord tumors in order to more efficiently help the patients. Brain tumors comprise about 5–9% of all human neoplasms; and the central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms are ranked among the most prevalent neoplasms of childhood as well. The more we know about the nature and characteristic of brain and spinal cord tumors, the more precise decision could be made for each patient, in order to reach the best outcome. While surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy have been considered as the standards of care for benign and/or malignant CNS tumors since a long time ago, new therapeutic approaches such as immunotherapy have been recently proposed to be considered for treatment of CNS tumors, especially as in some cases, the tumors might be inoperable or the patient may not benefit from other treatment modalities after several recurrences. The second volume of the book focuses on clinical aspects of these tumors. Accordingly, the most important brain and spinal cord tumors are specifically discussed in each chapter based on a rational outlining for all chapter in this volume: Background and epidemiology, genetics, immunology and molecular biology, histopathology and morphology, imaging and radiologic features, clinical manifestations, therapeutic approaches, surgical intervention, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, new therapeutic modalities, follow-up, and prognosis. The chapters of this volume discuss the following pathologies of brain and spinal cord tumors: malignant glioma, benign glioma, meningiomas and other meningeal tumors, ependymomas, medulloblastomas, pineal tumors, choroid plexus and ventricular tumors, neuroectodermal tumors of CNS, neuroepithelial tumors of CNS, pituitary gland tumors, craniopharyngioma, schwannomas and nerve-sheet tumors, hemangioblastomas and other vascular originating tumors, brain and spinal tumors of embryonic origin, germ line cell tumors, malignant bone or cartilage-originating tumors of brain and spine, benign bone or cartilage-originating tumors of brain and spine, brain tumors affecting the orbit globe and orbit tumors affecting the brain, CNS lymphomas, metastatic lesions of the brain and spine, malignant spinal tumors, benign spinal tumors, brain and/or spinal cord tumors accompanied with other diseases or syndromes, psychological and psychiatric aspects of brain and spinal cord tumors, a brief explanation on surgical approaches for treatment of different brain tumors. This volume of book is useful for physicians of different specialties, mainly neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropathologists, and neuroradiologists.
