Book Molecular Conformation and Dynamics of Macromolecules in Condensed Systems

Download or read book Molecular Conformation and Dynamics of Macromolecules in Condensed Systems written by M. Nagasawa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macromolecular materials possess some remarkable features arising from the fact that their molecules are made up of more or less flexible chains which can have various conformations. The study of molecular conformations and dynamics of macromolecules is important in polymer science and technology from both basic and practical viewpoints. In practice, these studies have concentrated on dilute solutions but more recently there has been a clear trend towards studying molecular properties in condensed systems in order to understand the entire macromolecular system based on a unified concept.Based on lectures presented by an internationally recognized group of polymer scientists at a meeting held in Japan in October 1987 (plus two additional contributions), this volume summarises present knowledge of molecular conformations and dynamics of macromolecules from dilute solutions to various condensed systems. The book is not a random collection of papers of the usual conference proceedings type. Authors prepared their contributions in line with an overall plan for the work, were able to discuss the content with colleagues at the meeting, and finalised their text after the conference. It is thus a comprehensive, integrated overview of the field. Current developments in both theory and experiment are discussed in a well-balanced way. The behaviour of macromolecules at phase transition and interface is discussed in relation to their behaviour in bulk systems. The book offers a particularly up-to-date and authoritative picture of the current state of the art, and will be of interest to all research and professional workers concerned with polymer science in universities, industry, and government institutions.

Book Helical Wormlike Chains in Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Helical Wormlike Chains in Polymer Solutions written by Hiromi Yamakawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the "helical wormlike chain" model – a general model for both flexible and semiflexible polymer chains. It explains how statistical-mechanical, hydrodynamic, and dynamic theories of their solution properties can be developed on the basis of this model. This new second edition has been carefully updated and thoroughly revised. It includes a new chapter covering "Simulation and More on Excluded-Volume Effects", as well as the discussion of new experimental data and the application of the theory to ring polymers. The authors provide analysis of important recent experimental data by the use of their theories for flexible polymers over a wide range of molecular weights, including the oligomer region, and for semiflexible polymers, including biological macromolecules such as DNA. This is all clearly illustrated using a reasonable number of theoretical equations, tables, figures, and computer-aided forms, which support the understanding of the basic theory and help to facilitate its application to experimental data for the polymer molecular characterization.

Book Reactive and Flexible Molecules in Liquids

Download or read book Reactive and Flexible Molecules in Liquids written by Th. Dorfmüller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observable phenomena in liquids ",hich distinguishes this state of matter from other types of condensed matter can be mainly assigned to a) the configurational disorder and b) the random motion of molecules. Both, the static and the dynamic aspect of randomness are typical for the liquid state and serve as a useful guideline in the attempts to theoretically understand this state. These two basic features, however, introduce in liquid state theory a number of apparently unsurmountable technical and conceptual problems so that progress in the last decades has only been made by small steps. In order not to complicate the situation even more, the tacit assumption was made that we could neglect internal motions of the molecules and that the molecular interactions which had to be taken into account are as simple as possible. We thus became accustomed to visualize molecules in the liquid as a dense assembly of classical rigid particles interacting with a potential which basically is represented by a Lennard-Jones type relation. In the last decade, it has become obvious that with these restrictions we dis regard many interesting effects in those liquids which are the most important ones. We thus see a serious gap developing between the refinements of liquid state theory and the exciting experiments being carried out in many laboratories.

Book Ordering in Macromolecular Systems

Download or read book Ordering in Macromolecular Systems written by Akio Teramoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes the papers presented at the First Osaka University Macromolecular Symposium OUMS'93 on "Ordering in Macromolecular Systems", which was held at Senri Life Science Center, Osaka, Japan, on June 3 through June 6, 1993. The symposium covered the three topics, (1) Crystallization and Phase Transitions, (2) Polymer Liquid Crystals and (3) Block Copolymers, Polymer Blends and Surfaces, and invited leading scientists in these fields. At present any of these topics is a hot issue in itself and frequently taken up separately in many occasions. It is noted however that all these topics are correlated with each other with the keyword "Ordering" and their combination provides a unique feature of the present symposium in reflecting the interactions among investigators working in these important fields with the common ground expressed by the keyword "Ordering". Nineteen invited lectures and 40 posters of both experiment and theory were presented at the symposium, and the eighteen lectures and ten poster presentations contribute to this volume. In the first topic crystal structures and their transitions were discussed from kinetic as well as static points of view; attention was paid to give a molecular-level interpretation of the structure, phase transition and physical properties, using theories and simulations. The second topic was mainly concerned with static structures and thermodynamic properties of polymer liquid crystals including phase behaviours.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Molecular Systems

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Molecular Systems written by R. Daudel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1986-05-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the second of a set of two which contain 28 selected from the l. j. O invited lectures given at the internatim;al seminar of the same title held at the Centre de Mecanique Ondulatoire Appliquee du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris (France) from October 1983 to May 1985. They are intended to provide a survey of topics of current interest relative to the structure and the dynamics of molecular systems. The papers have been selected on the basis of their relevance to the following four topics: i) molecular conformations and transformations; H) molecular relaxation and motion; iii) charge, spin and momentum distributions and intermolecular interactions; iv) collective phenomena in condensed matter. The first volume deals mostly with the first two topics, the second volume mostly with the last two. The two volumes consist of an approximately equal number of self-con tained, reference contributions covering recent achievements in active branches of molecular physics and physical chemistry. The first two papers of the present volume deal with theoretical aspects of intermolecular interactions: the first paper with the physical origin of the so-called non-exchange molecular terms, a complete deriva tion of which is given using Rayleigh-Schrodinger second-order perturba tion theory; the second paper with the symmetry analysis of the effects of interactions between rigid molecules and crystal environments, using the isodynamic-group theoretical approach devised by Altmann for non rigid systems.

Book Polymer Science A Comprehensive Reference

Download or read book Polymer Science A Comprehensive Reference written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 7752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress in polymer science is revealed in the chapters of Polymer Science: A Comprehensive Reference, Ten Volume Set. In Volume 1, this is reflected in the improved understanding of the properties of polymers in solution, in bulk and in confined situations such as in thin films. Volume 2 addresses new characterization techniques, such as high resolution optical microscopy, scanning probe microscopy and other procedures for surface and interface characterization. Volume 3 presents the great progress achieved in precise synthetic polymerization techniques for vinyl monomers to control macromolecular architecture: the development of metallocene and post-metallocene catalysis for olefin polymerization, new ionic polymerization procedures, and atom transfer radical polymerization, nitroxide mediated polymerization, and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer systems as the most often used controlled/living radical polymerization methods. Volume 4 is devoted to kinetics, mechanisms and applications of ring opening polymerization of heterocyclic monomers and cycloolefins (ROMP), as well as to various less common polymerization techniques. Polycondensation and non-chain polymerizations, including dendrimer synthesis and various "click" procedures, are covered in Volume 5. Volume 6 focuses on several aspects of controlled macromolecular architectures and soft nano-objects including hybrids and bioconjugates. Many of the achievements would have not been possible without new characterization techniques like AFM that allowed direct imaging of single molecules and nano-objects with a precision available only recently. An entirely new aspect in polymer science is based on the combination of bottom-up methods such as polymer synthesis and molecularly programmed self-assembly with top-down structuring such as lithography and surface templating, as presented in Volume 7. It encompasses polymer and nanoparticle assembly in bulk and under confined conditions or influenced by an external field, including thin films, inorganic-organic hybrids, or nanofibers. Volume 8 expands these concepts focusing on applications in advanced technologies, e.g. in electronic industry and centers on combination with top down approach and functional properties like conductivity. Another type of functionality that is of rapidly increasing importance in polymer science is introduced in volume 9. It deals with various aspects of polymers in biology and medicine, including the response of living cells and tissue to the contact with biofunctional particles and surfaces. The last volume is devoted to the scope and potential provided by environmentally benign and green polymers, as well as energy-related polymers. They discuss new technologies needed for a sustainable economy in our world of limited resources. Provides broad and in-depth coverage of all aspects of polymer science from synthesis/polymerization, properties, and characterization methods and techniques to nanostructures, sustainability and energy, and biomedical uses of polymers Provides a definitive source for those entering or researching in this area by integrating the multidisciplinary aspects of the science into one unique, up-to-date reference work Electronic version has complete cross-referencing and multi-media components Volume editors are world experts in their field (including a Nobel Prize winner)

Book Macromolecules in Solution and Brownian Relativity

Download or read book Macromolecules in Solution and Brownian Relativity written by Stefano Antonio Mezzasalma and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2008-07-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macromolecules in Solution and Brownian Relativity illustrates the recent picture of statistical physics of polymers and polymer solutions that emerges from some paradigms of contemporary science joint together. Among its principal aims are discussing the consequences of a novel self-diffusion theory, which benefits from an extension towards relativistic-like principles, and the generalization of usual concepts met in polymer science in terms of geometry alone. The monograph gives the whole fundamentals necessary to handle the view proposed, which is set in the final chapters. All the formers see about to provide the reader with a comprehensive treatation of the necessary fundamentals of classical, relativistic, quantum and statistical mechanics. Among the most important mechanical theories ever developed, a chapter on the Brownian movement and another on macromolecules prepare the ground that is specific to face universality and scaling behaviors in polymer solutions. The scope of the book is therefore two-fold: On the one hand, it wishes to involve the readers and scholars into a new research on polymer physics and chemistry. On the other, to get close chemical physicists and physical chemists to disciplines which, traditionally, are far from their direct fields of interest. Cross-disciplinarity Novelty Potentiality
