Book Advances in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology

Download or read book Advances in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology written by D. LeRoith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-03-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically the field of endocrine research has always been at the forefront of scientific endeavors. The investigators of these important breakthroughs in research have been rewarded by numerous Nobel awards. In the field of diabetes alone, Nobel prizes have been awarded to researchers who discovered insulin, characterized the protein and invented radioimmunoassays using insulin as a paradigm. Not surprisingly, biomedical researchers have always been attracted by the endocrine system and other similar systems of intercellular communication. Over the past two decades, endocrine research has developed rapidly and adapted modern molecular and cellular biology techniques for its specific use. These changes have allowed researchers in the field to maintain their edge. Thus, endocrine disease-related genes have been characterized and mutations in these genes have helped explain common and less common endocrine disorders. Our understanding of the regulation of gene expression has been greatly enhanced by molecular techniques. In an attempt to bring investigators up to date with the recent advances in this exploding field we have decided to publish a series entitled Advances in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. Internationally famous investigators have agreed to participate and their contributions are appreciated. Volume 1 has focused on aspects of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis including GnRH and GH gene regulation, molecular aspects of insulin, insulin-like growth factors and glucagon. In addition, reviews on the recently cloned calcium receptor and steroid receptor interactions with DNA are presented.

Book Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Testis

Download or read book Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Testis written by G. Verhoeven and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Workshops on Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology of the Testis have become by now a well-established tradition. Thanks to their special format, the quality of the main lectures and miniposters, and the vivid discussions, they enjoy the ever-increasing interest and active participation of all European scientists working in the field. Moreover, since the very beginning they have attracted investigators from all over the world. The most recent "Testis Workshop" was held in De Panne, Belgium, from 27-3\ March, 1994. As always, the frame work of the workshop was provided by a series of lectures delivered by a panel of internationally recognized authorities. These lectures are ga thered in the present volume of the Ernst Schering Foundation Work shop series. Together with the Miniposter book they constitute an excel lent written account of the Proceedings of the 8th European Testis Workshop. The testis undoubtedly represents one of the most complex and in triguing tissues in the body. Both its endocrine function, the secretion of male sex hormones, and its exocrine role, the production of mature spermatozoa, continue to raise startling questions to clinicians, physi ologists, endocrinologists, and scientists involved in fundamental re search. Few organs maintain and support a differentiation process as complicated as spermatogenesis; few tissues continually display both mitotic and meiotic cell cyles in such a stringently controlled fashion or a comparable need for coordinated endocrine and local control.

Book At the Cutting Edge

  • Release : 1991

Download or read book At the Cutting Edge written by John W. Funder and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September, 1989, the Editorial Board of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology resolved to introduce a volume of brief, topical and rapidly published reviews as a new feature for 1990. As a compilation, this book contains twenty At The Cutting Edge reviews, and seven full-length reviews. It is likely that the same volume next year will contain twice as many reviews of At the Cutting Edge and half as many full-length reviews. There is a great deal of encyclopaedic review material detailing the evolution of the current state of knowledge in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, however, there is increasingly a place for a more challenging and up-to-the-minute and perhaps cross-disciplinary focus required as a supplement. At the Cutting Edge are essays on rapidly developing areas in contemporary endocrinology. These reviews are meant to be eclectic rather than exhaustive, and speculative rather than encyclopaedic. The purpose of these essays is to stimulate and challenge; and if reading them prompts an experiment that otherwise would not have been done, then they will have succeeded.

  • ISBN : 0323155766
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Molecular Endocrinology written by Franklyn Bolander and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Endocrinology examines basic principles in molecular endocrinology using selected examples. It looks at the molecular aspects of hormone action, from hormone-receptor interactions to second messenger generation, gene induction, and post-transcriptional control. It also explores the regulation of nuclear receptors and membrane receptors, the nontranscriptional effects of hormones, the modifications of histone and nonhistone protein, the molecular evolution of the endocrine system, and the molecular bases of endocrinopathies. Organized into five sections comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with a brief summary of general endocrinology and then discusses the basic characteristics of hormones and their regulation, illustrated by the hormonal control of calcium metabolism. It explains other major endocrine systems, including the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland. The remainder of the text focuses on receptors and how to determine their number and affinity; the structure, function, and metabolism of nuclear and membrane receptors; the mechanisms for the regulation of receptor activity; the major second messengers, such as cyclic nucleotides, and how they can directly affect cellular processes; the role of phospholipids in signal transduction; mediators such as polyamines, oligosaccharides, and the cytoskeleton; the mechanisms by which hormones and their second messengers affect gene expression; and the hormonal control of various post-transcriptional events. This book will be of interest to biologists and those working in the field of molecular endocrinology.
