Book excerpt: This set reports the results of the 10th International Histocompatibility Workshop, in which 362 laboratories collaborated over a three year period in research projects on the classification of HLA genes and their products. Volume 1 describes the experimental design of the workshop studies and their results. Volume 2 is a collection of papers on the latest developments in the molecular biology of HLA systems. Immunobiology of HLA is a valuable reference for tissue typing laboratories, blood banks, and general research programs on HLA and related diseases because it identifies common sources of HLA genes and gene products to be used as reference reagents, and because it is the only complete compilation of the latest research and results in the field.

Book Molecular Biology of HLA Class II Antigens

Download or read book Molecular Biology of HLA Class II Antigens written by Jack Silver and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-02-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication covers the recent veritable explosion in knowledge regarding the genetic organization, structure, and function of the HLA class II region. It deals with the nature of diversity of HLA class II alleles, the molecular basis of this diversity, and the mechanisms by which HLA class II expression is regulated. Also addressed is the relationship of class II polymorphism to susceptibility to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, and pemphigus vulgaris. The book presents information on allele specific oligonucleotide (ASO) probes and their use in identifying susceptible individuals. It includes chapters which describe how cells transfected with HLA class II genes can be used for functional analysis. An appendix representing a compilation of all the known DR?? DQ?, DQ? sequences is included. This serves as an excellent source of comparison of newly derived sequences. This publication provides information on the enormous progress in the HLA field. It is intended for both the established investigator and the beginner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mononuclear phagocytes, which include macrophages, monocytes and their precursor cells, are the most important cells in the host defence against micro-organisms and tumor cells. During the last twenty-five years research on the biology of mononuclear phagocytes has increased tremendously. This motivated Professor R. van Furth to organize five international conferences on this subject in Leiden, the Netherlands. The edited proceedings of these meethings were published: in 1970 Mononuclear Phagocytes; in 1975 Mononuclear Phagocytes in Immunity, Infections and Pathology; in 1980 Mononuclear Phagocytes -- Functional Aspects; and in 1985 Mononuclear Phagocytes -- Characteristics, Physiology and Function. Reviews of these volumes, published in international journals, praised them as the most up-to-date state of the art publications. The publication of 1991 includes 88 chapters written by more than 200 authors.

Book Handbook of Mucosal Immunology

Download or read book Handbook of Mucosal Immunology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have recently made tremendous progress in the area of mucosal immunology, greatly increasing our understanding of the common mucosal immune system, mucosal infections, and oral immunization. However, thisresearch has not previously been made available in a single work. In its large 81/2"x 11"format, Handbook of Mucosal Immunology covers the entire spectrum of mucosal immunity and is organized in two main sections to present the basic biology of the common mucosal immune system and the immune responses of the mucosae. The first section provides an introduction and historical perspective of the mucosal immune system and includes comprehensive discussion of the development and physiology of mucosal defense. It discusses such topics as the structure and function of themucosal epithelium, characteristics of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), Peyers patches, and concepts of mucosal vaccines. The second section focuses on the secretory immune system with special reference to mucosal diseases in the digestive (GALT), respiratory (BALT), and genitourinary tracts. This information is especially important in light of the current interest in the mechanisms, transmission, and prevention of infectious diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis, and tuberculosis.Virtually all chapters have been authored by the original investigators responsible for key observations on which current concepts are based. This handbook will be an invaluable resource for a diverse group of both researchers and practicing clinicians.Molecular biologists, immunologists, veterinarians, public health workers, physicians in specialties from pediatrics to pulmonology, and graduate students of mucosal immunology will all find this handbook the most complete work on the subject.

Book Regulation of Immune Gene Expression

Download or read book Regulation of Immune Gene Expression written by Marc Feldmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encompasses the proceedings of a conference held at Trinity College, Oxford on September 21-25, 1985 organized by a committee comprised of Drs. M. Crumpton, M. Feldmann, A. McMichael, and E. Simpson, and advised by many friends and colleagues. The immune response gene workshops that took place were based on the need to understand why certain experimental animal strains were high responders and others were low responders. It was assumed that identification of the immune response (Ir) genes and definition of their products would explain high and low responder status. Research in the ensuing years has identified the Ir gene products involved in antibody responses as the la antigens, or MHC Class II antigens. These proteins are now well defined as members of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily, and their domain structure is known. Epitopes have been defined by multiple mono clonal antibodies and regions of hypervariability identified. Their genes have been identified and cloned. The basic observation of high and low responsive ness to antigen is still not understood in mechanistic terms, however, at either the cellular or molecular level. This is because the rate of progress in immune regulation has been far slower than in the molecular biology of the MHC Class II antigens. This is not surprising, since immune regulation is a very complex field at the crossroads of many disciplines.

Book The Genetic Basis of Common Diseases

  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-08-15
  • ISBN : 1000696995
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Nickel and the Skin written by Jurij J. Hostynek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published 2002, Allergic contact dermatitis from nickel is a continuing and increasing health problem. Nickel dermatitis may occur in sensitized individuals following contact with nickel-containing items such as jewelry, zippers, buttons, and other objects; by nickel leaching from implants and prostheses; and following occupational exposures. Although the most common of the health effects associated with exposure to nickel, the skin penetration of nickel and its compounds is poorly understood. Nickel and the Skin: Absorption, Immunology, Epidemiology, and Metallurgy gives an extensive, updated review of major topics and new topics, and covers material progress in the field of nickel hypersensitivity. Its content complements the mandate of NiPERA, the Nickel Producers Environmental Research Association, which is to promote the health and safety of those exposed to nickel or nickel containing products in the workplace and general environment. Many books on the toxicology of metals discuss nickel and its alloys in general terms. This one provides you with in-depth information on the causes, diagnosis, prognosis, and prevention, all in one source. Nickel and the Skin: Absorption, Immunology, Epidemiology, and Metallurgy provides a guide to the evaluation and treatment of what has become the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis.
