Book excerpt: Three cases of extreme local precipitation within the Intermountain summer season were studied to determine the source of moisture for these events. The rains occurred at Phoenix, Ariz. on June 22, 1972 (133 mm in 2 hours), at Elko, Nev. on August 27, 1970 (105 mm in about 2 hours), and at Morgan, Utah on August 16, 1958 (about 150 rnm in 1 hour). Synoptic data were used to analyze surface and upper levelmoisture changes in time and space. In each case the study showed that a tongue of high moisture at low levels approached the vicinity of or encompassed the storm area prior to onset of the rain. The tongue of moisture was very narrow in reaching toward the Elko and Morgan storms and could be traced, through continuity of changes in pattern with time, back to the Gulf of California. The moisture is believed to be conveyed through the natural channel provided by the Gulf and the paralleling ridges. The low-level moisture followed a path controlled to some extent by major mountain barriers. A general conclusion is that greater emphasis should be given to tropical Pacific moisture in evaluating extreme summer precipitation values for the Intermountain region.

It covers both subtropics and midlatitudes and its rainfall tends to be concentrated in rain belts that stretch for many thousands of kilometers and affect China, Japan, Korea, and the surrounding areas. The circulation of the East Asian winter monsoon encompasses a large meridional domain with cold air outbreaks emanating from the Siberian high and penetrates deeply into the equatorial Maritime Continent region, where the center of maximum rainfall has long been recognized as a major planetary scale heat source that provides a significant amount of energy which drives the global circulation during boreal winter. The East Asian summer monsoon is also closely linked with the West Pacific summer monsoon. Both are part of the global climate system and are affected by El Nino?Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and surface temperature variations in the western Pacific and surrounding oceans, the tropospheric biennial oscillation, and the South Asian summer monsoon. In addition, typhoons in the western North Pacific are most active during the East Asian summer monsoon. They may be considered as a component of the East Asian summer monsoon as they contribute substantial amounts of rainfall and have major impacts on the region. Because of its impacts on nearly one-third of the worldOCOs population and on the global climate system (including effects on the climate change), the study of the East Asian monsoon has received increased attention both in East Asian countries and in the United States. This book presents reviews of recent research on the subject."

It flowed on the surface, meandered across the floodplain, and occasionally carved deep channels or arroyos into valley fill. Groundwater was never far from the surface, in places outcropping to feed marshlands or ciénegas. In these wet places, arroyos would heal quickly as the river channel revegetated, the thriving vegetation trapped sediment, and the channel refilled. As readers of Requiem for the Santa Cruz learn, these aridland geomorphic processes also took place in the valley as Tucson grew from mud-walled village to modern metropolis, with one exception: historical water development and channel changes proceeded hand in glove, each taking turns reacting to the other, eventually lowering the water table and killing a unique habitat that can no longer recover or be restored. Authored by an esteemed group of scientists, Requiem for the Santa Cruz thoroughly documents this river—the premier example of historic arroyo cutting during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when large floodflows cut down through unconsolidated valley fill to form deep channels in the major valleys of the American Southwest.
