Book A Measure of Community

Download or read book A Measure of Community written by Sridevi Rao, Ph.D and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does sustainable public open space figure in the evolution of a city? This book presents empirical data through the case of Hyderabad (1591-1998) to answer this question, where the efficacy of public open space is explained as a measure of community. The book questions the generalised interpretation of the open space type and its distribution that is presently conceived by planners. The adoption of Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations in 2015 and Habitat III in 2016 have brought into focus the implementation of SDG in an existing reality in India. Particularly, SDG 11, target 7, which refers to public open spaces and the announcement by the Government of India for developing 100 Smart Cities, brings into focus the need to identify the changes that an open space undergoes as the city ages or develops due to changes in landuse and the community. The identification of popular open space types can point to the location of public open spaces in new development. This book is based on research conducted by the Author for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2003 examining the case of Hyderabad, India. The book is also based on Papers submitted in Conferences including the Future of Places III in Stockholm, Sweden in 2015.

At the same time it emphasises on certain changes witnessed due to the Muslim rule and the arrival of the traders from European countries. Besides their economic activities, the traders made inroads into the socio - political realm of the region. The Qutb-Shahi dynasty, the short Mughal rule under Aurangazeb, and the subsequent Asaf Jahi rule culminated in the establishment of a distinct Hyderabadi Culture, that is famous for religious tolerance and amalgamation of different cultures, and the emergence of Deccani as a language of the people! The two new religions, Islam and Christanity, created curiosity, conflicts and conversions in the region. The lack of patrons dealt a blow to the Brahmanical religion. Alternative medicinal system of the Islamic world, Unani was introduced. The Europeans introduced western surgery to the Royalty. The book highlights the emergence of a social order with new castes and sub castes, the change in the social hierarchy, the womens position, social reforms, a new dressing style in the upper section of society and the cosmopolitan luxury in the form of furniture, toiletry, jewelry etc.

Book excerpt: Qutub Shah POET & SUFI, LOVER & PRINCE & BUILDER OF HYDERABAD Selected Poems Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Muhammad Quli Qutab Shah (1565-1611) was the fifth sultan of the Qutub Shahi dynasty of Golconda in South India. He founded the city of Hyderabad. Qutab Shah was a scholar of Arabic and Persian. He wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian. His poetry has been compiled into a Divan of 50,000 couplets comprising ghazals, masnavis, qasidas, ruba'is, and qit'as. Qutab Shah had the distinction of being the first Urdu poet and is credited with introducing a new sensibility into prevailing genres of Persian/Urdu poetry. He was also a mystic or Sufi poet and a devout Shi'ite Muslim. Love of Mohammed and women are the major two themes in his poetry. The love story of Qutub Shah with the ravishingly beautiful Bhagmati has been a subject of curiosity for ages now. Their story has long been shrouded in mystery. Some thought she was more of a myth than reality, others insisted on her being an actual figure of enough substance. This is the largest translation of his poems in English in the correct forms. Introduction on Sufi Poetry, Forms he wrote, on his Life, Love, Poetry & Times. Appendixs on his Life, Love for Bhagmati. Illustrated. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 100 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFEZ'S 'DIVAN'. "It is not a joke... English version of all the ghazals of Hafez is a great feat of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafez 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator and knower of Hafez's Divan off by heart. "I was very impressed with the beauty of these books." Dr. R.K. Barz. Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University. Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages including Hafez, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Jigar, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Iqbal, Ansari, Jami, Omar Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Lalla Ded, Rahman Baba, Baba Latif and others, and his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies and a dozen screenplays.
