Book Pannonia and Upper Moesia Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Pannonia and Upper Moesia Routledge Revivals written by András Mócsy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pannonia and Upper Moesia, first published 1974, András Mócsy surveys the Middle Danube Provinces from the latest pre-Roman Iron Age up to the beginning of the Great Migrations. His primary concern is to develop a general synthesis of the archaeological and historical researches in the Danube Basin, which lead to a more detailed knowledge of the Roman culture of the area. The economic and social development, town and country life, culture and religion in the Provinces are all investigated, and the local background of the so-called Illyrian Predominance during the third century crisis of the Roman Empire is explained, as is the eventual breakdown of Danubian Romanisation. This volume will appeal to students and teachers of archaeology alike, as well as to those interested in the Roman Empire – not only the history of Rome itself, but also of the far-flung areas which together comprised the Empire’s frontier for centuries.

Book Roman Army Units in the Eastern Provinces 1

Download or read book Roman Army Units in the Eastern Provinces 1 written by Raffaele D’Amato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the reigns of Augustus and Septimius Severus, the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire frequently saw brutal fighting, most notably during the conquest of Dacia by Trajan, the suppression of the Great Revolt in Judea and intermittent clashes with Rome's great rival Parthia. In these wars, Roman soldiers had to fight in a range of different climates and terrains, from the deserts of the Middle East to the islands of the eastern Mediterranean. Using full-colour artwork, this book examines the variation of equipment and uniforms both between different military units, and in armies stationed in different regions of the Empire. Using evidence drawn from recent archaeological finds, it paints a vivid portrait of Roman army units in the Eastern provinces in the first two centuries of the Imperial period.

Book Urbanism and Settlement in the Roman Province of Moesia Superior

Download or read book Urbanism and Settlement in the Roman Province of Moesia Superior written by Dragana Mladenović and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main body of this volume is a comprehensive gazetteer of sites in the Roman province of Moesia Superior, providing details of settlement in the Pre-Roman Iron Age, the Roman Empire and in Late Antiquity, as well as full references. Introductory chapters present an analysis of changes in settlement patterns across the period. The author finds little evidence for continuity across the period of the Roman conquest, but argues that changes such as the abandonment of fortified hilltop settlements may already have been in motion in the years prior to the conquest. The role of military vici in economic development through the Roman period is explored and considerable settlement expansion in the Late Antique period discussed.

Book Christianity in Roman Scythia

Download or read book Christianity in Roman Scythia written by Ionuț Holubeanu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, there is no scholarly consensus on the ecclesiastical organization in the Roman province of Scythia (4th-7th centuries). This volume proposes a new interpretation of some of the historical evidence concerning the evolution of the see of Tomi: a great metropolis, first with suffragan bishoprics outside Roman Scythia and then inside it, and later an autocephalous archbishopric. Though there are also many unclear aspects regarding the evolution of monastic life in the province, this book reveals that, in contrast with the development of the monastic infrastructure in Roman Scythia, a spiritual decline began in the mid-5th century.
