Download or read book Chemical Mutagens written by Alexander Hollaender and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best protection against environmental mutagens is to identify them before they ever come into general use. But it is always possible that some substance will escape detection and affect a large number of persons without this being realized until later generations. This article considers ways in which such a genetic emergency might be promptly detected. A mutation-detecting system should be relevant in that it tests for effects that are as closely related as possible to those that are feared. It should be sensitive enough to detect a moderate increase in mutation rate, able to discover the increase promptly before more damage is done, responsive to various kinds of mutational events, and designed in such a way as to maxi mize the probability that the Gause of an increase can be found. Methods based on germinal mutation necessarily involve enormous numbers of persons and tests. On the other hand, with somatic mutations the individual cell becomes the unit of measurement rather than the in dividual person. For this reason, I think that somatic tests are preferable to germinal tests, despite the fact that it is germinal mutations which are feared.
Download or read book Photophysiology written by Arthur C. Giese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photophysiology, Volume II: Action of Light on Animals and Microorganisms; Photobiochemical Mechanisms; Bioluminescence presents the effects of light upon animals and microorganisms. This book discusses the fundamental photobiochemical mechanisms underlying some of the effects of light. Organized into 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the periodic functions of animals that can be manipulated by photoperiod. This text then examines the biosynthetic relationships between proteins and nucleic acids, which have been explored in part by observing the inactivating and reactivating effects of UV and visible light. Other chapters consider the physical factors that limit the performance of the eye to exact information about the environment from the light that reaches an animal. This book discusses as well the various anatomical and physiological features of the eye in relation to its limits. The final chapter deals with the occurrence of bioluminescence in nature. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, physiologists, and scientists.

Download or read book Mutation research written by Charlotte Auerbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for the senior undergraduate (Honours student) in genetics, and for the postgraduate who wants a survey of the whole field or information on a special area within it. In order to cater for readers with such different requirements, I have made the list of references unusually large for a textbook. It includes classical papers as well as very recent ones (to the end of 1974); reviews as well as specialized articles; elementary expositions from Scientific American as well as highly technical papers from journals on genetics and molecular biology. In areas of active research, I have given preference to the latest references, which will lead the reader to earlier ones. In addition to the references at the end of each chapter, a bibliography at the end of the book lists relevant books and general reviews. Apart from the first chapter, the book is not written as a history of mutation research; but throughout I have tried to emphasize the continuity of the problems, concepts and ideas. The reader will find many examples of this. Muller's once famous and then almost forgotten classification of genes by their action has now been given biochemical reality by studies of gene action in vitro. The problem of whether mutations can arise in non-replicating genomes is one of the oldest in mutation research; yet an unequivocal solution was obtained only recently with bacteriophage.
