Book Modification of Material Surface Using Plasma Enhanced Ion Beams

Download or read book Modification of Material Surface Using Plasma Enhanced Ion Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Final report presents review of the experimental data obtained during the first and the second year of the 2-years research effort on Application of Microsecond Plasma Opening Switch (MPOS) Technology for Materials Surface Modification. Following second year programmatic plan, formulated in the conclusion of the 1-st year report we focused our effort on study of aluminum alloys modification (Al2024, 6061, 7075), including enhancement of their corrosion resistance, testing feasibility of treatment of non-planar surfaces, testing new technology of composite film formation (TiAl) and improvement of aluminum alloys bulk fatigue properties. The ion beam parameters used are 250 keV energy, and current and energy densities of 150 A/sq cm and 2.2 J/sq cm, respectively. Characterization of the treated samples showed structural changes to a depth of about +1 micron. We demonstrated factor of 3 enhancement of corrosion resistance for the treated Al alloys samples, as measured by their mass loss. EDAX and Auger analysis of irradiated Al samples with pre-deposited thin Ti films indicate that mixing due to ion beam irradiation occurs to a depth of up to 1 micron. The systematic study on the bulk tensile and fatigue properties of the MPOS treated Al2024, Al7075 alloy samples were carried out both in air and in corrosive media. The measurements indicate no deterioration of the fatigue life time in the air for the MFOS treated samples, compared with non-treated. In the same time significant enhancement of fatigue life time for the treated 7075 alloy in corrosive media (1.5 times higher in fatigue limit) was registered. For the 2024 alloy the enhancement of fatigue lifetime was detectable only for higher stresses.

Book Material Surface Modification Using Pulsed High Power Plasma Ion Beam Technology

Download or read book Material Surface Modification Using Pulsed High Power Plasma Ion Beam Technology written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the Phase I effort was to demonstrate the effectiveness of plasma enhanced, high power, pulsed ion beams, produced in a Microsecond Plasma Opening Switch, for modification of the surface properties of materials. As part of the Phase I work we constructed and tested a system capable of generating an up to 300 keV, 180 A/sq.cm current density, 100 nanosecond ion beam pulse. The plasma enhanced ion beam was used to irradiate various steel and aluminum samples. Measurements indicate that at least a factor of 3 increase in microhardness occurs for the irradiated steel samples. Corrosion resistance, as measured by mass loss and anodic polarization curves, indicates at least a factor of 3 increase in corrosion resistance can be attained for the irradiated aluminum samples. Potential applications include treatment of aircraft aluminum to increase corrosion resistance and treatment of tool steels and other materials to increase hardness and wear resistance.

Book Surface Modification and Alloying

Download or read book Surface Modification and Alloying written by J.M. Poate and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of the NATO institute on surface modification which was held in Trevi, 1981. Surface modification and alloying by ion, electron or laser beams is proving to be one of the most burgeoning areas of materials science. The field covers such diverse areas as integrated circuit processing to fabricating wear and corrosion resistant surfaces on mechanical components. The common scientific questions of interest are the microstructures by the different energy deposition techniques. and associated physical properties produced The chapters constitute a critical review of the various subjects covered at Trevi. Each chapter author took responsibility for the overall review and used contributions from the many papers presented at the meeting; each participant gave a presentation. The contributors are listed at the start of each chapter. We took this approach to get some order in a large and diverse field. We are indebted to all the contributors, in particular the chapter authors for working the many papers into coherent packages; to Jim Mayer for hosting a workshop of chapter authors at Cornell and to Ian Bubb who did a sterling job in working over some of the manuscripts. Our special thanks are due to the text processing center at Bell Labs who took on the task of assembling the book. In particular Karen Lieb and Beverly Heravi typed the whole manuscript and had the entire book phototypeset using the Bell Laboratories UNIXTM system.

Book Ion Beam and Plasma Technology Development for Surface Modification at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Download or read book Ion Beam and Plasma Technology Development for Surface Modification at Los Alamos National Laboratory written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are developing two high-throughput technologies for materials modification. The first is a repetitive intense ion beam source for materials modification through rapid surface melt and resolidification (up to 10[sup 10] deg/sec cooling rates) and for ablative deposition of coatings. The short range of the ions (typically 0.1 to 5 micrometers) allows vaporization or melting at moderate beam energy density (typically 1-50 J/cm[sup 2]). A new repetitive intense ion beam accelerator called CHAMP is under development at Los Alamos. The design beam parameters are: E=200 keV, I=15 kA, [tau]=1 [micro]s, and 1 Hz. This accelerator will enable applications such as film deposition, alloying and mixing, cleaning and polishing, corrosion and wear resistance, polymer surface treatments, and nanophase powder synthesis. The second technology is plasma source ion implantation (PSII) using plasmas generated from both gas phase (using radio frequency excitation) and solid phase (using a cathodic arc) sources. We have used PSII to directly implant ions for surface modification or as method for generating graded interfaces to enhance the adhesion of surface coatings. Surfaces with areas of up to 16 m[sup 2] and weighing more than a thousand kilograms have been treated in the Los Alamos PSII chamber. In addition, PSII in combination with cathodic source deposition has been used to form highly adherent, thick Er[sub 2]O[sub 3] coatings on steel for reactive metal containment in casting. These coatings resist delamination under extreme mechanical and thermal stress.

Book Plasma Technology for Deposition and Surface Modification

Download or read book Plasma Technology for Deposition and Surface Modification written by Mohammad Mokbul Hossain and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2009 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma processing is a high-technology discipline in tailoring surface properties and in obtaining functional polymers of advanced materials without changing the material's bulk. Comparing with solid polymeric materials, special care should be taken for surface activation of textiles due to their complex geometries. It was found that modification is strongly influenced by both plasma parameters and fabric structure. As compared to air, CO2, and water vapor, Ar/O2 and He/O2 mixtures were found to be very effective for surface hydrophilization of polyester textiles due to the long-lasting free radical lifetimes. The modified surfaces were not stable for a long time due to restructuring of the polar functional groups. Therefore, plasma coatings containing functional groups are required in order to obtain a permanent surface modification. Permanent nanoporous coatings were deposited in order to obtain functional surfaces which contain accessible functionalities within the entire coating volume. This novel approach is essentially based on a fine control of simultaneous deposition and etching processes during plasma co-polymerization of ammonia with hydrocarbons. A nanoporous structure with a large specific surface area was achieved that contained functional groups inside the coating volume, which were accessible to e.g. dye molecules, thus facilitating substrate independent dyeing. A permanent hydrophilic modification of material surfaces was obtained by introducing nitrogen polar functionalities, depending on the NH3 to hydrocarbon ratio, which is mostly due to a replacement of carbon in a-C: H: N films. This novel combination of polar groups with a suitable texturing realized within crosslinked aC: H: N coatings proved to be an efficient method providing a long-term mechanical stability of superhydrophilic coatings. Moreover, plasma coated material surfaces contain huge numbers of functional groups which can chemically interact with matrix materials and hence, yield strong covalent bond between fiber and matrix. The coatings show a large surface area which enhances the contact area and surface texturing and additionally promotes mechanical interlocking. Thus, the novel, developed nanoporous coatings represent a platform for diverse multifunctional applications in the surface enhancement of advanced material

Book Surface Engineering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years there has been increasing need for systematic and straregically designed experiments of surface morphology evolution resulting form ion bombardment induced sputtering. Although there is an impressive number of investi gations {1} concerned with semiconductor materials as a result of immediate applications, the most systematic investigations have been conducted with fcc metals with particular interest on single crystal Cu {2,3}. Evidence now exists that within certain para meters (i. e ion species (Ar+), ion energy (20-44 KeV), substrate 2 temperature (80-550° K), dose rate (100-500 gA cm- ) , residual x 5 9 pressure (5 10- to 5x10- mm Hg) and polar and azimuthal angle of ion incidence {4} reproducible surface morphology (etch pits and pyramids) is achieved on the (11 3 1) specific crystallographic orientation. The temporal development of individual surface features was alsoobserved in this laterstudy {4}, by employing an in situ ion source in the scanning electron microscope at Salford, a technique also empolyed in studies of the influence of polar angle of ion incidence {5} and surface contaminants {6} on the topographyof Ar+ bombarded Si. Studies have also been made on the variation of incident ion species with the (11 3 1) Cu surface and it was fully recognized {7} that residual surface contaminants when present could playa major role in dictating the morhological evolution.

Book Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology

Download or read book Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology written by P. Misaelides and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-01-31 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and superhard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their quality. Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology provides an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale are presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection. The book is divided into six thematic units: Fundamentals, Surface Analysis Techniques, Laser Beams in Materials Technology, Accelerator-Based Techniques in Materials Technology, Materials Modification and Synchrotron Radiation.

Book Plasma Immersion Surface Modification with Metal Ion Plasma

Download or read book Plasma Immersion Surface Modification with Metal Ion Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe here a novel technique for surface modification in which metal plasma is employed and by which various blends of plasma deposition and ion implantation can be obtained. The new technique is a variation of the plasma immersion technique described by Conrad and co-workers. When a substrate is immersed in a metal plasma, the plasma that condenses on the substrate remains there as a film, and when the substrate is then implanted, qualitatively different processes can follow, including' conventional' high energy ion implantation, recoil implantation, ion beam mixing, ion beam assisted deposition, and metallic thin film and multilayer fabrication with or without species mixing. Multiple metal plasma guns can be used with different metal ion species, films can be bonded to the substrate through ion beam mixing at the interface, and multilayer structures can be tailored with graded or abrupt interfaces. We have fabricated several different kinds of modified surface layers in this way. 22 refs., 4 figs.
