Este tercer volumen de El moderno sistema mundial abarca lo que Wallerstein llama “segunda era de la gran expansión de la economía-mundo capitalista”, de 1730 a 1850. En él se estudian la llamada revolución industrial inglesa, la revolución de independencia de los países sujetos hasta entonces a la corona española, en función siempre del desarrollo de la moderna economía burguesa. Estos acontecimientos representan un fortalecimiento y una consolidación del sistema capitalista mundial, en el que se suprimen las fuerzas populares y su potencial queda constreñido a las futuras transformaciones políticas: habrá que esperar al siglo XIX para presenciar cómo esas fuerzas populares constituyen toda una nueva estrategia de lucha.

In the first decades, the Peruvian author produced essential works on peasant movements, the urbanization process, and the class structure in Peru and Latin America by mobilizing sociological categories such as marginality, dependency and structural heterogeneity. He devoted himself to investigating imperialist domination in Peru and its implications for social classes and created the journal Sociedad y Política. In the 1990s and 2000s, the Peruvian sociologist published a set of texts on the coloniality and decoloniality of power, which represents a theoretical construction inseparable from the processes and experiences that were occurring in Peru, Latin America and the world, from the “globalization” of “neoliberalism” to global and local resistances. Thus, this book is addressed to all those, with or without specialized training in social sciences, interested in knowing not only the history of social sciences in Latin America but mainly in understanding the historical roots and the political dilemmas of peripheral capitalist societies.

Playing a pivotal role within these national shifts were students from Guatemala’s only public university, the University of San Carlos (USAC). USAC students served in, advised, protested, and were later persecuted by the government, all while crafting a powerful student nationalism. In no other moment in Guatemalan history has the relationship between the university and the state been so mutable, yet so mutually formative. By showing how the very notion of the middle class in Guatemala emerged from these student movements, this book places an often-marginalized region and period at the center of histories of class, protest, and youth movements and provides an entirely new way to think about the role of universities and student bodies in the formation of liberal democracy throughout Latin America.
