During this time, there have been three significant phases which have affected the development of feminist theory: the pre-modern, which is characterised by fixed order, roles and explanations reinforced by accepted tradition, the modern, associated with the 1960s and 70s when the consequences of biological determinism were rejected and the agenda moved to the way society was structured and the roles that resulted; the postmodern of the 1990s onwards when women were encouraged to discover their own subjectivity, and construct those experiences into something that is appropriate for them. Analysing these three eras, Elaine Storkey explains how the complex interactions of social, political, and philosophical issues have influenced our understanding of the origins and meanings of human sexuality. Storkey then asks whether any real progress has been made. Are women still struggling to obtain real equality in our society? She argues that an impasse has been reached. The secular philosophy underlying the various phases has been left wanting. What is required is an alternative, biblically based understanding that seeks to recover our true humanity, understands what it means to be male and female, and creatively works to express these differences in our relationships.

They pored over magazines that described the dangerous pleasures of corporal punishment.
