Book Modernisation of Science Policy and Management Approaches in Central and South East Europe

Download or read book Modernisation of Science Policy and Management Approaches in Central and South East Europe written by E. Kobal and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses different aspects of science and technology policy in South East Europe (SEE). Some of these countries, particularly the ones facing political and economic crises, are still not integrated into the international community. Furthermore, their scientific communities have not been able to seize the opportunities offered to them on the international level. This has often been the consequence of the fact that R&D is not supported by efficient science policies. In addition, many of the SEE countries have not been able to develop modern management approaches in science. As a result, national scientific communities often do not have the support and information that they need to become integral and active players in the international arena. Without modern management strategies, these countries will not be able to use all of their intellectual and other resources, which are an essential part of economic development. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of S&T policies in SEE countries for the first time and brings these countries into comparative perspective with Central European and other EU countries. In addition, the volume contains analysis of several important science policy issues (human resource management, management of quality and finance, peer review and networking); in this respect, the volume will be of interest to a wider audience interested in S&T policy-making in general.

Book A New Ecological Order

Download or read book A New Ecological Order written by Ştefan Dorondel and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of industrial capitalism in the nineteenth century forged a new ecological order in North American and Western European states, radically transforming the environment through science and technology in the name of human progress. Far less known are the dramatic environmental changes experienced by Eastern Europe, in many ways a terra incognita for environmental historians and anthropologists. A New Ecological Order explores, from a historical and ethnographic perspective, the role of state planners, bureaucrats, and experts—engineers, agricultural engineers, geographers, biologists, foresters, and architects—as agents of change in the natural world of Eastern Europe from 1870 to the early twenty-first century. Contributors consider territories engulfed by empires, from the Habsburg to the Ottoman to tsarist Russia; territories belonging to disintegrating empires; and countries in the Balkan Peninsula, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. Together, they follow a rhetoric of “correcting nature,” a desire to exploit the natural environment and put its resources to work for the sake of developing the economies and infrastructures of modern states. They reveal an eagerness among newly established nation-states, after centuries of imperial economic and political impositions, to import scientific knowledge and new technologies from Western Europe that would aid in their economic development, and how those imports and ideas about nature ultimately shaped local projects and policies.

Book Internationalisation of Social Sciences in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Internationalisation of Social Sciences in Central and Eastern Europe written by Ilona Pálné Kovács and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationalisation of Social Sciences in Central and Eastern Europe explores the way in which social sciences, in comparison with other sciences in Europe, have been divided by the political orders of West and East. As part of the field of science policies in Europe, this book contributes to the creation of a new understanding of the European academic landscape of social sciences with particular focus on CEE countries. In its investigation of the emergence of social sciences in Central and Eastern Europe following the collapse of the totalitarian systems, this book discusses how the internationalisation of the social sciences and the convergence between Western and Eastern social scientific life is hindered by factors including funding, academic contacts, and curriculum development. The issues addressed within the text serve to prompt the realisation that coherence in European social sciences can be reached only if new academic traditions and cultures are developed, and science policies harmonised. This book is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students of European Integration, CEE or Transitional Studies, and any courses related to science policies. It is also relevant to science administrators and policy makers at national and European level.

Book Ecological Modernisation Around the World

Download or read book Ecological Modernisation Around the World written by Arthur P.J. Mol and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of ecological modernisation originated in Western Europe in the 1980s, gaining attention around the world by the late 1990s. At the core of this social scientific and policy-oriented approach is the view that contemporary societies have the capability of dealing with their environmental crises. Experiences in some countries demonstrate that modern institutions can incorporate environmental interests into their daily routines. Elsewhere, economic and political interests dominate development trajectories and environmental deterioration continues, challenging the premises of ecological modernisation. This volume brings together research on ecological modernisation practices around the world. Studies on Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, the USA, and Southeast Asia examine the applicability of this approach to advanced industrial countries, transitional economies and developing countries respectively. Authors critically examine the premises of ecological modernisation theory, assess its value for understanding past and present environmental transformations, and outline paths for designing future sustainable development. Taken together, the studies in collected this volume offer significant refinements, extensions and critiques of ecological modernisation theory and suggest important directions for future research on social and policy dimensions of environmental change.

Book excerpt: Strategies for Europe: Proposals for Science and Technology Policies evaluates proposals for developing strategies for European research policies in five priority areas: fundamental research; social sciences; industrial innovation; public involvement in science and technology; and relations with developing countries. The importance of the multidisciplinary approach in dealing with the kinds of problems that Europe has to solve in the future is emphasized. Comprised of seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the contribution that science and technology may make to the government of the human societies organized in the nation-states of Europe. The role of science policy in providing the necessary kind of wisdom that seems to be developing within the social sciences is discussed, along with the importance of basic research in ensuring the continuity of scientific and technical development on a long-term basis. Subsequent chapters deal with the approach of the European Science Foundation to science and technology; the contribution of the social sciences to the formulation of science and technology policies; industrial innovation and public involvement in science and technology; and Europe's relations with developing countries. The book concludes by offering recommendations for developing appropriate science and technology policies for Europe. This monograph will be of interest to science policymakers.

Book Exploring Central and Eastern Europe s Biotechnology Landscape

Download or read book Exploring Central and Eastern Europe s Biotechnology Landscape written by Peter T. Robbins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the human genome has been sequenced advances in the life sciences seem to have great potential for human health, industry and the environment throughout Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Still, for some, potential risks and ethical dilemmas remain, surrounding issues such as the appropriate use of GM crops, stem cells, genetic information, the nature of intellectual property and other challenges that come with EU accession. This book is the first of its kind to bring together experts from across Europe to explore the landscape of current life science policy and industrial development in CEE, including implications for economies, regulatory and legal frameworks, health care, ethics and human rights. It will be essential reading for researchers and students in science and technology studies, development, sociology, politics and law, and those interested in life science development in transition economies.
