Book excerpt: Postmodernity in Latin America contests the prevailing understanding of the relationship between postmodernity and Latin America by focusing on recent developments in Latin American, and particularly Argentine, political and literary culture. While European and North American theorists of postmodernity generally view Latin American fiction without regard for its political and cultural context, Latin Americanists often either uncritically apply the concept of postmodernity to Latin American literature and society or reject it in an equally uncritical fashion. The result has been both a limited understanding of the literature and an impoverished notion of postmodernity. Santiago Colás challenges both of these approaches and corrects their consequent distortions by locating Argentine postmodernity in the cultural dynamics of resistance as it operates within and against local expressions of late capitalism. Focusing on literature, Colás uses Julio Cortázar’s Hopscotch to characterize modernity for Latin America as a whole, Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman to identify the transition to a more localized postmodernity, and Ricardo Piglia’s Artificial Respiration to exemplify the cultural coordinates of postmodernity in Argentina. Informed by the cycle of political transformation beginning with the Cuban Revolution, including its effects on Peronism, to the period of dictatorship, and finally to redemocratization, Colás’s examination of this literary progression leads to the reconstruction of three significant moments in the history of Argentina. His analysis provokes both a revised understanding of that history and the recognition that multiple meanings of postmodernity must be understood in ways that incorporate the complexity of regional differences. Offering a new voice in the debate over postmodernity, one that challenges that debate’s leading thinkers, Postmodernity in Latin America will be of particular interest to students of Latin American literature and to scholars in all disciplines concerned with theories of the postmodern.

Para muchos de ellos existen otras cuestiones m�s interesantes, la escuela les resulta aburrida y no tienen mayor inter�s por aprender o conocer. Muchos de ellos no tienen inter�s en conocer artistas de otras �pocas, pues consideran que est�n pasados de moda y, simplemente, no les gustan. Menos probable es que les interesen cuestiones de teor�a del arte. Los artistas comerciales, los videojuegos, los YouTubers, han captado su atenci�n, dinero y tiempo. La era digital, la sociedad de consumo parece han dado la �ltima palabra con relaci�n al arte y los artistas, pero tambi�n, la ignorancia est� gobernando las acciones en materia de educaci�n art�stica, en el pa�s, este tema lo abordo a detalle en otras obras. Por su parte, los adultos, muchos de ellos, se inclinan a la ficci�n, a las novelas, tambi�n de eso he escrito en otros espacios.De manera silenciosa, o mejor dicho escandalosa, acudimos al fin del arte y de los artistas. Quedan en su lugar, charlatanes, personas creadas artificialmente, por la industria y que generan millones de d�lares a partir de chatarra. El Arte reducido a imagen (esto lo sabe bien la mercadotecnia), es comercializable a manera de "recuerditos" o materia decorativa. El capital y los grandes intereses marcan rumbos y, sobre todo, prop�sitos a la industria del entretenimiento. En ese sentido, la finalidad ser�, precisamente, entretener. Dicho con otras palabras, hacer perder el tiempo a las personas, distraerlos de actividades importantes.La vanidad, el ego�smo y el narcisismo, caracterizan a muchos de los j�venes mexicanos, basta ver sus perfiles de Facebook, con fotograf�as de ellos mismos frente al espejo (adoraci�n del cuerpo y falta de autoestima) y sus publicaciones (por ejemplo, de futbol). El arte en la era posmoderna quedar� reducido no a saber, sino a decir, a opinar. Las creencias ser� la forma de "apreciaci�n art�stica". Y la mera ejecuci�n mec�nica. La forma que adquirir� la "expresi�n art�stica", muy cercano a manualidades. Incultos e ignorantes, es muy dudoso que se interesen por el arte.Vayamos pues, hasta 1997 en donde iniciaremos este estudio.
