Excerpt: ... the simplicity of the gospel by eev. andkew P. peabody, D.D. of cambridge, massachusetts After more than half a century's conversance with the various and successive forms of scepticism as to the authenticity of the Gospels, I feel a stronger faith than even that of my unquestioning childhood in these books as a substantially truthful record of the life and mission of Jesus Christ. At the same time I am more than ever profoundly impressed with the simplicity of his method, teachings, and spirit, and with the injury that has been done to Christianity and the vantageground that has been given to sceptics and infidels by the foisting upon it of technical theology. No word has been so much abused or has done so much mischief as doctrine. It is not, properly speaking, a Christian word. It is used, indeed, in our translation of the New Testament, but always as equivalent to a Greek word which means not dogma, but moral teaching. Thus St. Paul tells servants to adorn the doctrine, that is, the teaching of God their Saviour by not stealing from their masters; and I might quote a half-score or more of passages from which it would appear that what we call duties are the doctrines of the New Testament, so that we use only its own language when we term the Sermon on the Mount a summary of Christian doctrine. Indeed, Christianity has no doctrines in our sense of the word, --no technical or formal statements as to the subjects on which Christians have been disputing for these many centuries. The subjects of these disputes form no part of Christ's teaching, nor yet, as it seems to me, of that of either of the sacred writers. St. Paul is commonly quoted for them, and he doe

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Unitarianism: Essays and Sermons We have assembled to-night to dedicate this building as a house of worship, a home for Christian work, a school of Christian education. It is a Unitarian Church which meets here for the worship of one God, the Father. It is a Christian Church, which takes Jesus of Nazareth as the leader of the human race in its ascent toward God, and in its brotherhood of love. This is not the first time that a Unitarian Church has been dedicated in Philadelphia. February 14, 1813, seventy-three years ago, the first Unitarian Church in this city was opened for the worship of the one true and living God. The society having outgrown the original building, a second was erected, and dedicated November 5, 1828.And now we meet to offer a third building to the service of God and man. But the Unitarian Church existed here long before its first house of worship was erected. In 1796 fourteen persons united for Unitarian worship in one of the rooms belonging to the University of Pennsylvania. Book excerpt: Unknown to most Americans, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and Benjamin Franklin were Unitarians. Today their beliefs have been called heretic or Christian, godless or liberal, argumentative or religious, or all of the above. Anatole Browde, an active Unitarian since 1948, uses history and theology to place these conflicting qualities into a unified liberal Judeo-Christian context. Browde is convinced that faith is besieged because Unitarian church goers have diverse belief systems. The power of the original Unitarian idea that God is one is too close to a creed and is therefore often devalued. Using sermons and essays by ministers and philosophers, Browde shows how Unitarianism beliefs dating from the sixteenth century overcame the restrictions of Calvinist predestination and sin, to become a worldwide free religion. Unitarians are free to believe in God, be humanists, have faith in an unknown, or in Christ as a prophet. His narrative provides an insight to the controversies that plagued believers throughout Unitarian history and demonstrates that the concepts of God and faith can make every service a celebration of joy and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlining a bold vision for the future of Unitarian Universalism, 20 leaders issue a clarion call for change. In inspiring, fresh essays, they implore us to collectively liberate ourselves from patterns that prevent us from becoming a robust faith for a new age. Emerging from a history marred by the errors of individualism, exceptionalism, and anti-authoritarianism, Unitarian Universalism faces a crossroads. Turning Point shows a way forward, by embracing promises shaped from our theology: generosity, pluralism, and imagination. With essays that include the stories of creative new types of Unitarian Universalist communities across the country, this essential new collection outlines a liberal faith for the twenty-first century. It offers a vision of an inclusive, multicultural Beloved Community and inspires trust that Unitarian Universalism can deepen and grow once again, meeting the aching needs of a new generation.

Book excerpt: The Gadfly Papers is a collection of three essays written by Rev. Dr. Todd F. Eklof about the negative impacts the emerging culture of Political Correctness, Safetyism, and Identitarianism is having on America's most liberal religion. It's written specifically for Unitarian Universalists who care about the future of their faith, but will prove of interest to anyone seeking to understand how today's identity politics can fundamentally alter any institution, and presents a seminal case-study for researchers of this timely subject. The Gadfly Papers is a substantive, well argued work that's based on plenty of credible scholarship, yet is written in a conversational tone that makes its complex subject matter easy to understand. Whether you're a Unitarian Universalist, a student of history, social science, politics, or simply value the rare but refreshing application of logic, The Gadfly Papers is a book you won't put down until it's finished.
