At the same time I am more than ever profoundly impressed with the simplicity of his method, teachings, and spirit, and with the injury that has been done to Christianity and the vantageground that has been given to sceptics and infidels by the foisting upon it of technical theology. No word has been so much abused or has done so much mischief as doctrine. It is not, properly speaking, a Christian word. It is used, indeed, in our translation of the New Testament, but always as equivalent to a Greek word which means not dogma, but moral teaching.
