Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Tunneling In most of the published accounts of tunnel work, the writers usually do not attempt to criticise the methods they are de scribing. It is customary for such articles to contain accurate descriptions of equipment, various phases of working operations, and occasionally figures showing the cost of the work, but rarely do they include a discussion of the means for preserving the health and life'of the employees, or data bearing upon the choice and efficiency of equipment or an analysis of methods and costs. As a result, the reader in drawing conclusions is dependent wholly upon his own resources. In this volume, on the con trary, the making of such analyses will be a primary considera tion. It is desirable, nevertheless, in an impartial, disinterested book of this character to use constructive rather than destruc tive criticism. For that reason emphasis will be placed upon safe, efficient, and economical methods, and upon good points of equipment, While bad practice and obsolete machinery will be ignored except, perhaps, as examples of the inadvisable or as they have some bearing historically. Thus the authors hope to set forth a guide for future work rather than an unillumined record of past or present achievement. N o matter what his special branch may be, the engineer may be called upon to take his part in the construe tion of a tunnel or in deciding whether he shall or shall not build a tunnel, and if so, by what method he shall build it. He may be the chief on whose shoulders rest the responsibilities of making the final decision and of directing the efforts of a staff of experts, or he may be a youngster fresh from college, serving his first term as a draftsman, inspector or rodman on the design or construction of such a tunnel. During the last ten years, no less than eight subaqueous tunnels involving the construction of sixteen tubes have been constructed for the service Of the city Of New York alone. Book The Construction of a Small Tunnel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Construction of a Small Tunnel Classic Reprint written by John George Gale Kerry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of a Small Tunnel When the contractors had full forces, the excavation was carried on by day and night shifts, working ten hours each from both ends of the tunnel. It was but rarely, however, that full forces were employed, as the adjacent grading was more backward than the tunnel and the men were drawn 06 to it. The excavation was all done by hand work, no special tunnel machinery being employed, and it was conducted on the general principle that nothing is so expensive in tunneling as a eave-ia. Book Railway Tunnelling in Heavy Ground Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railway Tunnelling in Heavy Ground Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Gripper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Tunnelling in Heavy Ground Tms book, or treatise on Tunnelling, is not supposed by the author to contain anything new or unknown to Engineers or Contractors generally, nor does it contain formulw or positive rules for constructing such works, as none can be laid down, no two Tunnels ever being exactly similar in conditions affecting their construction. The author believes, however, that his practice and experience as a Civil Engineer and Contractor will enable him to give such information to assistant Engineers and Con tractors' assistants as will materially help them, and by describing the general methods and requirements to be adopted in com mencing and carrying out Tunnel works, place young Engineers, who may not have much experience in this class of work, in a position to understand what is wanted or what is going on, when called upon to commence a Tunnel, or to take charge of and superintend the works of one already commenced; and so that they may not become tools in the hands of the foreman miner or bricklayer, who in many cases have the work let to them by sub-contract, and who will immediately take advantage of inexperience, to the detriment of the work, disgrace to the management, and loss to the chief Contractor and all concerned in the well-being of the line of Railway. Book Tunnel Timbering and Lining

Download or read book Tunnel Timbering and Lining written by Rodney Linton Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tunnel Timbering and Lining: Thesis If we take the finished product as the basis of comparison, none of the tunnels excavated by the ancients would take a, very high place as examples of engineering skill, but there is one thing which stands out from.most of these works, and.which causes even the engineers to reflect; this is the wonderful perseverance shown by the ancients in pushing their tunnels to a successful completion. When we consider that their means of excavation were limited to hand tools and wedging supplemented occasionally by the fire setting system.of excavation, we begin to understand the enormous amount of work which it took to excavate some of these tunnels, and it would be impossible for us to imagine how the work could have been done if we did not remember that the laborers were slaves, and that the value of human life was held at naught. Book Tunneling

Download or read book Tunneling written by Eugene Lauchli and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tunneling: Short and Long Tunnels of Small and Large Section Driven Through Hard and Soft Materials The preparation of this treatise on tunneling was undertaken as an endeavor to supply practicing engineers and contractors with such information as is needed most usually in tunnel work, and to present students with the underlying principles indispensable to the solution of the many problems met with in driving tunnels serving miscellaneous purposes. It is no small task to give, within the scope of this book, all such information as may be expected by tunnel men in general; such subjects as drilling machinery and equipment, compressor and ventilating plants, explosives and their use, etc., which alone would make a book, together with bulky descriptions bearing on the driving of individual tunnels, have necessarily been avoided or dwelt upon only briefly, and the text has been reduced to a minimum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tunneling Under the Hudson River: Being a Description of the Obstacles Encountered, the Experience Gained, the Success Achieved, and the Plans Finally Adopted for Rapid and Economical Prosecution of the Work The writer's Opportunities for close and careful inspection have been most favorable from almost the beginning of the enterprise. It has been his duty, while attached to technical journals of this city, to examine and describe the operations at the tunnel. Visits were frequent, and the purpose was early formed of some day collecting and arranging the data obtained. The larger part of the articles then written appeared in Engineering News, and were made up of notes almost invariably personally obtained in the heading of the tunnel. The writer wishes to acknowledge the kind courtesy of Mr. D. C. Haskin, manager of the company, who loaned the note-books and working-drawings of his office.
