Book Modern Tennis

Download or read book Modern Tennis written by P. A. Vaile and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Tennis Mr. P. A. Vaile has asked me to introduce his book on Tennis to amateur players of this delightful game. I will do it simply and without any pretense to style, for I must confess that I feel much more at home with a racket in my hand than with a pen between my fingers. I do not know whether you have noticed how few and far between are the books on games that really deserve the name and that treat authoritatively and in a competent manner the various rules governing the particular game under discussion. As a rule, one encounters no more than the enthusiastic descriptions of amateurs, sincere enough, doubtless, in themselves, but lacking the technical knowledge that is absolutely indispensable if the presentation of the subject is to be at all convincing. Or again, one happens upon long scientific treatises by experts who, with the figures at their fingers' ends, give one the trajectory described in space, for instance, by a football, or, in the case of a quoit hurled by a strong effort, curves of exceptional accuracy but practically no value as creators of enthusiasm. It is rarely, indeed, that we get the practical side of things, which alone really interests the player. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outdoor Sports and Pastimes

Download or read book Outdoor Sports and Pastimes written by Union Pacific Railway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outdoor Sports and Pastimes: Correct Rules for Lawn Tennis, Croquet, and Base Ball The game of Tennis is one of the ancient pastimes of England, and it was a favorite game with royalty from ancient times down to the present. But the Tennis of that day is not the Lawn Tennis of the nineteenth century, the latter really being a sort of return to the pristine days of the game when it was played out of doors in a very crude way; and therefore we need not lefer to the old game of Tennis further than to state that it was a far more di icult game to play than is modern Tennis. It is not necessary tofrefer at length to the origin of the modern game, beyond stating the fact that it came into favor as a lawn substitute for the old court game; and from its introduction has won its way to a popularity unprecedented almost in the history of field games of ball. As, for its brief history in America, it may be said that no game has been introduced in this country from England which has achieved such rapid favor in fashionable circles of American society as the game of Lawn Tennis. It is now the pet society game at all the watering places and at every fashionable summer resort in the country. Besides which, it is the only all - the-year-round game of ball now in vogue; for when the summer lawn is covered with snow, in-door Tennis is at command in any moderately-sized. Andsmoothly-fioored hall. While Lawn Tennis is a special favorite with those who cannot excel in any game requiring any special attribute of physical courage, owing to the fact that every phase of danger is eliminated from the game, it is also popular with those who are expert in such manly sports as base ball, cricket, lacrosse and football, from the fact that it necessitateslitheness of limb and activity of movement, besides affording a field for stragetic skill when the game is played up'to its highest point, which is quite enjoyable by way of contrast in present ing a light exercise, differing greatly from the vigorous and somewhat danger ous exercises of the other games. Then, too, Lawn Tennis is an excellent field game of ball for ladies, as it affords them the very kind of exercise they most need, and that is out door activity, which will bring the dormant muscles of the limbs and the chest into play. There is an additional recommendation, too, for Lawn Tennis, and that is that it can be played on a comparatively small space of level ground, or on a hall floor. There is one thing about Lawn Tennis playing, as in vogue in general society, which makes it exceptional, and that is, in no field game now enjoying popular favor, are the amenities of social life so particularly observed. The game is one that has come to stay, as it fills a void which has existed a long while, and that 18, the want of a game in which ladies and gentlemen can participate, while at the same time plenty of active and not too vigorous exercise can be afforded for both, and that, too, Without any element of danger to mar the pleasure of its enjoyment. Book excerpt: The award-winning, New York Times bestselling literary masterpiece of Shirley Hazzard—the story of two beautiful orphan sisters whose fates are as moving and wonderful, and yet as predestined, as the transits of the planets themselves A Penguin Classic Considered "one of the great English-language novels of the twentieth century" (The Paris Review), The Transit of Venus follows Caroline and Grace Bell as they leave Australia to begin a new life in post-war England. From Sydney to London, New York, and Stockholm, and from the 1950s to the 1980s, the two sisters experience seduction and abandonment, marriage and widowhood, love and betrayal. With exquisite, breathtaking prose, Australian novelist Shirley Hazzard tells the story of the displacements and absurdities of modern life. The result is at once an intricately plotted Greek tragedy, a sweeping family saga, and a desperate love story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Jack Etc These young men were now two-and-twenty. They had been at school together, and together they went to Cambridge, where Harry Branson went in for athletics, and Fred Thornton for reading. Harry won the mile race for his University, and covered himself all over with glory, so that Cicely clasped Christina by the hand, and felt as if Heaven had indeed destined her (through her lover) to greatness. He was, also, admirable at football, cricket, racquets, tennis, especially the modern branch of the game, played with girls upon the grass, billiards - and, in fact, at all games requiring dexterity of hand and quickness of eye. To say, further, that he could dance admirably, that he was a good-looking lad, with a pleasing smile and charming manners, is also necessary in order to disarm prejudice for it must he confessed that he did nothing, and wanted to do nothing, and preferred to do nothing. Some books there are on Hunting, some on Racing, some on Lawn Tennis, some on Fishing, and so on but one Library, or succession of volumes, which treats of the Sports and Pastimes indulged in by Englishmen - and women - is wanting. Book The Penguin Book of the Prose Poem

Download or read book The Penguin Book of the Prose Poem written by Jeremy Noel-Tod and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decades have seen an explosion of the prose poem. More and more writers are turning to this peculiarly rich and flexible form; it defines Claudia Rankine's Citizen, one of the most talked-about books of recent years, and many others, such as Sarah Howe's Loop of Jade and Vahni Capildeo's Measures of Expatriation, make extensive use of it. Yet this fertile mode which in its time has drawn the likes of Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, T. S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein and Seamus Heaney remains, for many contemporary readers, something of a mystery. The history of the prose poem is a long and fascinating one. Here, Jeremy Noel-Tod reconstructs it for us by selecting the essential pieces of writing - by turns luminous, brooding, lamentatory and comic - which have defined and developed the form at each stage, from its beginnings in 19th-century France, through the 20th-century traditions of Britain and America and beyond the English language, to the great wealth of material written internationally since 2000. Comprehensively told, it yields one of the most original and genre-changing anthologies to be published for some years, and offers readers the chance to discover a diverse range of new poets and new kinds of poem, while also meeting famous names in an unfamiliar guise.
