Book Modern Taiwan Calligraphy and Paintings a Study After 1949

Download or read book Modern Taiwan Calligraphy and Paintings a Study After 1949 written by Chang Wen-Ching and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of modernism has brought tremendous changes to all aspects of society. The great development of materials, science and technology shapes a severe situation. But cultural development seems increasingly weak and extreme, which requires revolutionary and breakthrough thinking. Based on such circumstances, the development of calligraphy and painting art, in the greenhouse of our ancient civilization, is still hesitating instead of moving forward. There is no way forward. Neither does it have a little sense of changing. Of course, under such a premise, we can see that a lot of artists both in mainland and in Taiwan are actively exploring and they don not forget their historical mission. This is quite a relief. I now produce this article not for simple, brutal criticism, but to summarize. I hope to give the future generations a reference and if it will be able to play a role as a guideline, it is very meaningful.

Book The Mountains and Rivers Remain

Download or read book The Mountains and Rivers Remain written by Lesley Ma and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My dissertation investigates the foreign and domestic forces instrumental in the development of modernist abstract painting in postwar Taiwan between 1957 and 1968. My work contributes to the discourse of postwar abstract painting and modernism by providing a critical study of the relationship between calligraphy, ink painting, and abstraction. Mainland-born, Taiwan-educated artists continued the unfinished project of May Fourth by conducting the first thorough re-examination of Chinese art traditions and interacting with European and American modern art currents. Against a backdrop of post-colonial cultural reorientation, post-civil war social reconstruction, martial law, and Cold War geopolitical realities, abstraction emerged as a style that upheld traditional Chinese aesthetic principles, that translated personal experiences of displacement, and that promised readability in the international arena. The first two chapters examine the emergence of abstraction from outward- and inward-looking angles, respectively. Chapter One examines the curatorial agenda and interests behind "The New Chinese Landscape : Six Contemporary Chinese Artists," the first major exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, 1966-1968. Chapter Two considers the pivotal role of two literature and arts magazines, Wenxing and Bihui, as cultural producers and dialogue generators in the formation of Taiwan Modernism. It highlights the tight relationship between the artists and poets as they constructed a discourse for modernism. Chapter Three traces the evolution of the meaning of abstraction in postwar Taiwan, paying special attention to the "abstract landscape" by Liu Kuo-sung and Chuang Che, the most prominent artists of the Fifth Moon Society. Chapters Four and Five look at the respective practices of Liu and Chuang and offer detailed formal analysis of their paintings, especially on their treatment of calligraphy and abstraction. In Chapter Four, I analyze the artistic trajectory of Liu and the development of his vernacular landscape paintings throughout the 1960s. In Chapter Five, I identify Chuang's use of brokenness as an aesthetic that confronts the predicament of displacement. In both chapters I examine the patronage and reception of their work outside of Taiwan to place them in the larger discourse of postwar abstraction and show the challenges in traversing cultural boundaries for transnational artists of their postwar generation.

Book Art and Artists of Twentieth Century China

Download or read book Art and Artists of Twentieth Century China written by Michael Sullivan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This visually stunning book focuses on the rebirth of Chinese art in the twentieth century under the influence of Western art and culture. Michael Sullivan, recognized throughout the world as a leading scholar of Chinese art, vividly documents the conflicting pulls of traditional and Western values on Chinese art and provides 364 illustrations, in color and black-and-white, to show the great range of artistic expression and the historical processes that occurred within various movements. A substantial biographical index of twentieth-century Chinese artists is a valuable addition to the text. Sullivan discusses artists and their work against China's background of oppression and relaxation, despair and hope. He expertly conveys the diverse and at times bizarre intertwining of Chinese cultural history and art during this century. Included are the intense debates between traditionalists and reformers, the creation of the first art schools, and the birth of the idea—shocking in ethnocentric China—that art is a world language that obliterates all frontiers. The scholarly traditions of classical Chinese painting, the belated discovery of Western modernism, the artistic upheaval under Communism, and China's rethinking of the very nature of art all have a place in Sullivan's fascinating history. Michael Sullivan has known many of the major figures in China's modern art movement of the 1930s and 1940s and has also gained the confidence of younger artists who rose to prominence following the 1979 "Peking Spring." This long-awaited book—richly documented and abundantly illustrated—is a capstone to Sullivan's work and will be enthusiastically welcomed by art lovers everywhere.

Book Literary Authority and the Modern Chinese Writer

Download or read book Literary Authority and the Modern Chinese Writer written by Wendy Larson and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, Chinese writers have confronted the problem of creating a new literary tradition that both maintains the culturally unique aspects of a rich heritage and succeeds in promoting a new modernity. In the first book-length treatment of the topic, Wendy Larson examines the contradictory forms of authority at work in the autobiographical texts of modern Chinese writers and scholars and the way these conflicts helped to shape and determine the manner in which writers viewed themselves, their texts, and their work. Larson focuses on the most famous writers associated with the May Fourth Movement, a group most active in the 1920s and 1930s, and their fundamental ambivalence about writing. She analyzes how their writing paradoxically characterized textual labor as passive, negative, and inferior to material labor and the more physical political work of social progress, and she describes the ways they used textual means to devalue literary labor. The impact of China's increasing contact with the West--particularly the ways in which Western notions of "individualism" and "democracy" influenced Chinese ideologies of self and work--is considered. Larson also studies the changes in China's social structure, notably those linked to the abolition in 1905 of the educational exam system, which subsequently broke the link between the mastery of certain texts and the attainment of political power, further denigrating the cultural role of the writer.
