Christian megachurch communities often embrace this reality wholeheartedly while more traditional churches often seem hesitant and overwhelmed by the need for an interactive website, a Facebook page and a twitter feed. This book accepts digital connectivity as our reality, but presents a vision of how faith communities can utilize technology to better be the body of Christ to those who are hurting while also helping followers of Christ think critically about the limits of our digital attachments. This book begins with a conversion story of a non-cell phone owning, non-Facebook using religion professor judgmental of the ability of digital tools to enhance relationships. A stage IV cancer diagnosis later, in the midst of being held up by virtual communities of support, a conversion occurs: this religion professor benefits in embodied ways from virtual sources and wants to convert others to the reality that the body of Christ can and does exist virtually and makes embodied difference in the lives of those who are hurting. The book neither uncritically embraces nor rejects the constant digital connectivity present in our lives. Rather it calls on the church to a) recognize ways in which digital social networks already enact the virtual body of Christ; b) tap into and expand how Christ is being experienced virtually; c) embrace thoughtfully the material effects of our new augmented reality, and c) influence utilization of technology that minimizes distraction and maximizes attentiveness toward God and the world God loves.

But in order to gain a still deeper impression of his holy personality we will in these closing chapters construct from the fragmentary statements scattered over his entire life a more compact, connected and synthetic portrait of some of the general aspects of his career, such as (1) his character; (2) his mission and work; (3) the chief problems of his life; (4) his influence on the world; closing (5) with a refutation of the chief non-biblical views of the Life of Christ CHAPTER 50. The Character of Jesus. 481. Character is the sum total of the qualities by which a person is distinguished from others. It is the result of three determinants: 1. A man's individuality, that is, his original constitution, and inherited tendencies; 2. His environment, that is, the external circumstances which influence life; 3. His free will, that is, his own modification of the possible effects on himself of Nos. 1 and 2. Character expresses itself in a man's body, the instrument of action; his mind, the light or guide to action; his emotions, the heat, or spur of action; his will, the control of action. In analyzing our Lord's character we will make use of these four time-honored psychological categories. I. The Lord's Physical Characteristics. 482. Information from the Scriptures. (1) Nothing definite is recorded in the New Testament as to Christ's outward appearance. (2) But inferences have been drawn from various passages. A Crimean Jewish adventurer and explorer of India, Notovitch traveled widely across the East in the late nineteenth century. He claimed to have discovered a biographical document in Hemis Monastery - located in modern-day India - from which he created this book. The bold and fantastical claims about Christ attracted attention from scholars of Christianity and the popular media of the time. Spotting inconsistencies in Notovitch's account, it was only after being confronted with these that he apparently confessed to having fabricated the biography of Jesus Christ. For some years the entire matter was considered a hoax; until the Indian mystic Swami Abhedananda visited the Hemis Monastery where a monk confirmed that Notovitch had stayed some six weeks there, convalescing with a broken leg, whereupon he read the disputed documents concerning Christ.
