Book Splicing Modern Ropes

Download or read book Splicing Modern Ropes written by Jan-Willem Polman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time when every vessel going to sea made use of 3-strand rope has gone. Splicing that type of rope and cord is relatively straightforward. Nowadays the most common type of rope used on board yachts, dinghies, motorboats, working boats and ferries is braided rope. Few people have the knowledge to splice it, or even where to start. Splicing Modern Ropes is the first guide to this essential skill. It explains why splices are better – and stronger – than knots or shackles for joining or shortening rope, and how to go about it. With this skill, yachtsmen can customise their ropes, optimise their deck layout, taper their sheets for ease of handling, and splice an extra cover on their ropes to give better grip, avoid chafe and make them last longer. Using clear, step-by-step photography and detailed instructions, this book will guide readers through all the stages required to make strong, reliable splices.

Book excerpt: For marine, boating, and climbing amateurs and professionals at all levels, splices--the strongest way of attaching or joining the end of a rope--are essential. Why? Because a splice gives the strongest way of attaching or joining the end of a rope to any object or to another rope. (Every knot, on the other hand, weakens a rope.) In this much-anticipated handbook, world-renowned expert Friedl guides you through modern splicing techniques with his clear directions, one-of-a-kind color diagrams, and 200+ color photos. The book is supplemented by four-plus hours of excellent video instruction. Throughout, every type of splice is shown by an expert climber and shipbuilder. Learn what to know before starting to splice, then build a solid understanding and competence of modern cordage, its construction, and its fiber materials. Friedl has over 35 years of sailing experience, including several Atlantic crossings, and is also a professional climber. He teaches seminars and workshops on modern splicing worldwide, and in 2006, Friedl made the modern soft shackle internationally known. Now, his much-anticipated book allows you, whether you are a hobbyist or a professional, to leverage splicing skills to become more self-reliant while making your maritime or climbing pursuits safer.

Download or read book The Touchstone of Life written by Werner R. Loewenstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-07 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one can escape a sense of wonder when looking at an organism from within. From the humblest amoeba to man, from the smallest cell organelle to the amazing human brain, life presents us with example after example of highly ordered cellular matter, precisely organized and shaped to perform coordinated functions. But where does this order spring from? How does a living organism manage to do what nonliving things cannot do--bring forth and maintain all that order against the unrelenting, disordering pressures of the universe? In The Touchstone of Life, world-renowned biophysicist Werner Loewenstein seeks answers to these ancient riddles by applying information theory to recent discoveries in molecular biology. Taking us into a fascinating microscopic world, he lays bare an all-pervading communication network inside and between our cells--a web of extraordinary beauty, where molecular information flows in gracefully interlaced circles. Loewenstein then takes us on an exhilarating journey along that web and we meet its leading actors, the macromolecules, and see how they extract order out of the erratic quantum world; and through the powerful lens of information theory, we are let in on their trick, the most dazzling of magician's acts, whereby they steal form out of formlessness. The Touchstone of Life flashes with fresh insights into the mystery of life. Boldly straddling the line between biology and physics, the book offers a breathtaking view of that hidden world where molecular information turns the wheels of life. Loewenstein makes these complex scientific subjects lucid and fascinating, as he sheds light on the most fundamental aspects of our existence.

Download or read book The Cure written by E. R. Dee and published by Earl R. Dingman. This book was released on 2017-12-31 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the people of Homeworld are tall, thin, have a full head of hair, perfectly straight teeth, chiseled facial features, with no diseases or defects, and they get to enjoy the easy life, as robots do all the hard work. A majority of them live in various townships, occupying a small dwelling where they get to enjoy the local services for free. They want for nothing in this paradise, living out their lives until old-age or disease strikes them down as there are only first aid centers to treat minor problems. On the other side of heavily guarded security walls lies Central City. This is where Government, Industry, Science, and Technology is located, with most of the work done by robotics and androids. Travel on vehicles, trams, trains, flying machines, and spaceships is done by Artificial Intelligence. The population of Homeworld and their various colonies is created by either cloning or genetic engineering. Aggression is conditioned out of the population so there is an absence of crime. Those old enough are educated, then trained in various disciplines. Those who complete training become great artists, educators, government officials, scientists, healers, engineers, designers, supervisors at plants and security stations. Those who don’t make the grade are sent to the outlying townships where they live out their lives, eating, sleeping, watching entertainment, or talking with friends, as it is illegal to kill any living being for any reason, nor can anyone be deprived of the necessities of life. If more food or housing is required, they simply have the robots make it! The educated elite in Central City mostly sit at desks and supervise the robots and androids who do the actual tasks of drawing, painting, sculpting, designing buildings, manufacturing, cooking, cleaning, or running the Healing Center. At the healing center they can digitally reconstruct any organ in the body, thus keeping the working elite alive and well for ages, but when the mind or central nervous system starts to fail due to old-age, these highly educated elite beings are retired. Once retired, they no longer get full medical care. Like those in the outlying townships, they simply await death, but they still get to live in the larger, better dwelling spaces of Central City, with androids and robots to serve them. The people of Homeworld, however, are starting to die off in great numbers, and the Digital Healing Machines can only offer temporary fixes. Quickly the organs once more start to decay and fall apart. The best medical minds can’t find a reason nor a cure to what is striking the population. And this is happening in all the colonies. Tens of billions are dying off, with no end in sight. Unless a cure is found, one day there may only be robots and androids left! Homeworld brings all their specialists together, ordering them to find out why people are falling apart. Adar, one of the Team Leaders working on this problem, makes a startling discovery and leads a team to a planet in a distant star system with the hope that this discovery might shed light on the problem and maybe even provide THE CURE!
