Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Spanish Readings: Embracing Text, Notes, and an Etymological Vocabulary Ursuin G the principle initiated in the Grammar, the present P volume offers a series of prose readings, each complete in itself, that fairly represent the language of contemporary Spain, as exhibited in the light article, the story, the essay, history, and the formal lecture. It will be evident at a glance, then, that no confusion Of epochs, with their archaisms, Obsolete terms and con structions, will be found here, as in compilations commonly called Readers the language throughout is such as one bears in actual life in good society, or may read in the journal, the review, and the latest work Of fiction. When earlier matter is required, it should always be presented distinctly as such, with its special treatment, the faithful preservation of its orthography, glossology, and gram matical forms, that the student may know when he is reading the style of his own time, and be able to distinguish what is quaint or What is wholly Obsolete. Although no tongue in Europe can be understood by the plain man so far back in the Middle Age as the Castilian, it must not be inferred that this is due to the immobility of its vocabulary and syntax, but rather to the maintenance of anti quated terms in remote and rural districts, and which, by traffic, are kept traditionally alive in the towns. No educated person says at present ende, dende, demjfiues, ona'e, probe, naz'a'z, etc., in the capital, yet these are as easily understood there to-day as in the times Of Alfonso e1 Sabio, because still current among rustic and unlettered people. With these Readings, then, a sufficient introduction is fur nished to Spanish literature current in the actual century and even for a long way back in the preceding one. Book The Cambridge Companion to Modern Spanish Culture

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Modern Spanish Culture written by David T. Gies and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of modern Spanish culture, tracing its dramatic and often unexpected development from its beginnings after the Revolution of 1868 to the present day. Specially-commissioned essays by leading experts provide analyses of the historical and political background of modern Spain, the culture of the major autonomous regions (notably Castile, Catalonia, and the Basque Country), and the country's literature: narrative, poetry, theatre and the essay. Spain's recent development is divided into three main phases: from 1868 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the period of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; and the post-Franco arrival of democracy. The concept of 'Spanish culture' is investigated, and there are studies of Spanish painting and sculpture, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and the modern media. A chronology and guides to further reading are provided, making the volume an invaluable introduction to the politics, literature and culture of modern Spain.

Book A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish

Download or read book A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish written by John Butt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (abridged and revised) This reference grammar offers intermediate and advanced students a reason ably comprehensive guide to the morphology and syntax of educated speech and plain prose in Spain and Latin America at the end of the twentieth century. Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.
