Book Observatories and Telescopes of Modern Times

Download or read book Observatories and Telescopes of Modern Times written by David Leverington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives an historical overview of the development of professional optical and radio observatories from 1945 to today. It covers the environment in which these facilities were developed by organisations in the United States, Europe and elsewhere, often led by larger-than-life individuals, as well as exploring the financial and political factors that both constrained and encouraged progress. As ever more expensive optical facilities were built, they exploited new technologies to significantly improve their performance: CCDs, active and adaptive optics, and spun honeycomb and segmented mirrors. The second half of this volume turns to the parallel history of radio astronomy facilities throughout the world, finishing with the ALMA observatory in Chile. This is the ground-based companion to the author's previous work on space astronomy, New Cosmic Horizons (2001). It is written for both technical and non-technical readers interested in the modern history of astronomy and its observational facilities.

Book Climate and Weather of the Sun Earth System CAWSES

Download or read book Climate and Weather of the Sun Earth System CAWSES written by Franz-Josef Lübken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAWSES (Climate and Weather of the Sun-Earth System) is the most important scientific program of SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics). CAWSES has triggered a scientific priority program within the German Research Foundation for a period of 6 years. Approximately 30 scientific institutes and 120 scientists were involved in Germany with strong links to international partners. The priority program focuses on solar influence on climate, atmospheric coupling processes, and space climatology. This book summarizes the most important results from this program covering some important research topics from the Sun to climate. Solar related processes are studied including the evolution of solar radiation with relevance to climate. Results regarding the influence of the Sun on the terrestrial atmosphere from the troposphere to the thermosphere are presented including stratospheric ozone, mesospheric ice clouds, geomagnetic effects, and their relevance to climate. Several chapters highlight the importance of coupling mechanisms within the atmosphere, covering transport mechanisms of photochemically active species, dynamical processes such as gravity waves, tides, and planetary waves, and feedback mechanisms between the thermal and dynamical structure of the atmosphere. Special attention is paid to climate signals in the middle and upper atmosphere and their significance relative to natural variability.

Book Magnetic Coupling between the Interior and Atmosphere of the Sun

Download or read book Magnetic Coupling between the Interior and Atmosphere of the Sun written by S.S. Hasan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar physics in India has a tradition that can be traced to the setting up of the Kodaikanal Observatory in 1899 when the Madras Observatory was relocated to a high altitude site with a view to initiate observations of the sun. This conference on Magnetic Coupling between the Interior and the Atmosphere of the Sun during 2–5 December 2008 was planned to coincide with centenary of the Evershed effect discovery at Kodaikanal in 1909. The aim of this meeting was to bring to a critical focus a comprehensive - derstanding of the important issues pertaining to solar magnetism with particular emphasis on the various MHD processes that operate in the solar atmosphere. The current status of magnetic eld measurements and their implications in the light of recenttheoriesandnumericalmodelingthataddressthe fundamentalscalesandp- cessesinthehighlymagnetizedturbulentplasmawerereviewedduringthismeeting. The meeting was timely for the following reasons: Space observations such as from SOHO and TRACE have provided a wealth of multiwavelength observations onprocessesoccurringinregionsofthe atmosphereextendingfromthe photosphere up to the outer corona. With the launch of Hinode and STEREO in 2006 and of SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) shortly, this conference provided a platform for in-depth discussions on new results from various space missions as well as a comparison with ground-based observing facilities such as the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. Using sophisticated image processing techniques, such telescopes r- tinelygenerateobservationswitharesolutionbetterthan0. 1arcsec,therebyyielding more informative diagnostics for instance of the microstructure of ux tubes.

Book Solar Energy

Download or read book Solar Energy written by Arno Smets and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad overview on the different aspects of solar energy, with a focus on photovoltaics, which is the technology that allows light energy to be converted into electric energy. Renewable energy sources have become increasingly popular in recent years, and solar is one of the most adaptable and attractive types – from solar farms to support the National Grid to roof panels/tiles used for solar thermal heating systems, and small solar garden lights. Written by Delft University researchers, Solar Energy uniquely covers both the physics of photovoltaic (PV) cells and the design of PV systems for real-life applications, from a concise history of solar cells components and location issues of current systems. The book is designed to make this complicated subject accessible to all, and is packed with fascinating graphs and charts, as well as useful exercises to cement the topics covered in each chapter. Solar Energy outlines the fundamental principles of semiconductor solar cells, as well as PV technology: crystalline silicon solar cells, thin-film cells, PV modules, and third-generation concepts. There is also background on PV systems, from simple stand-alone to complex systems connected to the grid. This is an invaluable reference for physics students, researchers, industrial engineers and designers working in solar energy generation, as well those with a general interest in renewable energy.

Book Kodai School on Solar Physics

Download or read book Kodai School on Solar Physics written by S. S. Hasan and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2007-07-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kodaikanal School on Solar Physics offered and intensive two week course on topics related to the Physics of the Sun. The school had a truly international character and was attended by both students and lecturers from different parts of the globe. The course was aimed at Ph.D. students or final year M.Sc (physics) students interested in solar physics and who want to pursue it further. The purpose of the school was to provide an introduction to solar physics for students who do not have an opportunity to take such a course at their homeinstitutions. There were 42 lectures, 5 evening seminars, 10 observation oriented projects, and three computer lab exercises. The students were given the opportunity to observe the Sun with the existing facilities in the observatory.
