Book Modern Socialism Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Socialism Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Vail and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism, Vol. 1 IT has been my purpose in this volume to present, in as concise a form as practicable, the principles and purposes of Socialism. The growth of Socialism has been phenomenal. Its rapid spread surpasses that of early Christianity, with which it has many features in common. It has become international and cosmopolitan in character. The importance of the movement is sufficient reason for the publication of this book, but this is not the principal reason it is put forth. As a clergyman, believing in the Kingdom of God, and realizing our apparent distance from the ideal, some years ago I began to seek a solution of the problem. I had not proceeded far upon my investigation before being impressed by the incongruity between the de mands of the Kingdom of God, and the demands of our economic system. I saw clearly their incompatibility, and the hopelessness of realizing the former under the environ ment of the latter. I became convinced after a careful study of the various phases of sociological thought, that it is use less to hope that the ideal of the ages - peace, justice and plenty - would be realized under the antagonisms of our competitive system. But to substitute co-operation for com petition would be Socialism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism Great changes are long in the preparing, and every thought that meets ultimately with wide acceptance is lying inarticulate in many minds ere it is syllabled out by some articulate one, and stands forth a spoken Word. The Zeitgeist has its mouth in those of its children who have brain to understand, voice to proclaim, courage to stand alone. Some new Truth then peals out, sonorous and far-sounding as the roll of the thunder, melodious to the ears attuned to the deep grand harmonies of Nature, but terrible to those accustomed only to the subdued lispings of artificial triflers, and the murmurs which float amid the hangings of courtly halls. When such an event occurs a few hearken, study, and then rejoicingly accept the new Truth; these are its pioneers, its apostles, who go out to proclaim it to the as yet unbelieving world. They meet with ridicule, then with persecution; for ever the new Truth undermines some hoary Lie, which has its band of devoted adherents living on the spoils of its reign. Slowly, against custom and tradition, against selfishness and violence, even against indifference, deadliest foe of all, this band of devoted teachers makes its onward way. And the band grows and grows, and each convert becomes in his turn a pioneer; until at last the victory is won, and the minority has become the majority; and then the time comes for some new Truth once more, and the old struggle is gone over afresh, and so again and again; and thus the race makes progress, and humanity climbs ever upward towards the perfect life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism: In Its Historical Development The Socialistic literature notwithstanding its vastness opens to view a gap, the almost total absence of a systematic, scientifically objective and critical investigation of what constitutes the doctrine of modern Socialism. Schaeffle sfamous book Quintessence of Socialism exhibits to a certain extent such a tendency but lacks every historical illustration and bears more or less a dogmatical stamp. This work, as well as Menger sNew State Doctrine are besides mere expositions of a part of the general doctrine of Socialism as they interpret only its positive side. Bourguin sContemporary Socialist Systems, one of the latest researches in this province, is to my mind far from fulfilling the void 1 have pointed out, being in a con-1siderable measure but an unconvincing attempt to confute Socialism as a positive doctrine.; Many good writings on Socialism have of late been published. It will suffice to mention Sombart swell-known book Socialism and the Socialist Movement during the Nineteenth Century which also belongs to that class of writings, the-- -4 . Book Socialism and Modern Thought Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Modern Thought Numerous works have appeared within the last ten years on modern socialism, but the writer of this is not aware that anyone has shown the connection between the movement and the general current of thought, extending over the whole field of intellectual activity in the present day. And yet the true meaning of the socialistic movement cannot be understood without some comprehensive view of the age we live in, its philosophy of life, its leading scientific theories, its ethical conceptions, its peculiar mood of agnostic pessimism, its determined effort to perform the practical duties of life in spite of the weariness of spirit which comes of lost faith, its willingness to take up a standpoint on the sure ground of positive fact only, and its consequent preference for the Religion of Humanity or the Religion of Culture as substitutes for traditional creeds. Book Socialism and Government Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialism and Government Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by James Ramsay MacDonald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Government, Vol. 1 The State as we know it to - day, with national boundaries as its condition and national armies and navies as its most dramatic form of expression, is probably doomed to disappear and, at some still distant date, the parliament of man may assemble to represent the federation of the world. Yea, even the idea of government based upon force and carried out by legal enactment may become foreign to the human mind when in some far remote generation the beatitudes have become the common rule of life and the moral ideas of the Prophets have been embodied in the ordin ary habits of the people. But these visions of the New Jerusalem only come to uswhen we are in the Spirit. Our heritageis Patmos - its spite, its politics, its problems. As yet, humanity is broken into fragments - colours, civilisations, races, nations. Its future perfections must grow from its present imperfections, and the task of the social reformer who works for permanent results is to begin improving with the material which he has at hand. Ideals are only valuable when they are used for the practical purpose of regenerating the exist ing realities. Book The New Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Socialism Classic Reprint written by Harold A. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism This little book, written with the purpose of presenting in a popular and readable form, ideas which have been treated more seriously elsewhere, is almost wholly descriptive of a form of social and industrial organization which the writer conceives to be in harmony with the principle of social justice elsewhere enunciated. The problem of practical socialism is as old as civilization. In all centuries men have dreamed of a golden age in which all things would be made perfect, and have struggled to devise laws and systems under which men might cooperate in harmony, and all have sufficient for their needs. Yet, at the present day, the problem appears to be as little understood as in the beginning. From the time of Moses and Plato to that of the more modern Utopian imaginings which hold our interest for a passing day and are soon forgotten, philosophers have left but futile records of their speculations. Hence men have come to think of the problem as one which does not come within the sphere of exact science. He who claims to have reached a solution of the problem must necessarily face an incredulous audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A History of Socialism Classic Reprint written by Thomas Kirkup and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint written by Forgotten Books and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New Socialism

Download or read book The New Socialism written by Jane T. Stoddart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist Almanac and Treasury of Facts, 1898, Vol. 1 For the past thirty years the Socialist movement has so deeply affected the intellectual, political and economic life of the German people that a full record of the events connected with its progress in Germany would in itself be an al most complete history of that country during that period. There is no room here for a work of such magnitude, and in the presentation of the subject before us' we must confine ourselves to the statement of a comparatively few facts, deemed the most important. Yet, in justice to some bold pioneers who, ever so utopian in their constructive schemes, should not be forgotten, we may prop erly begin with a brief mention of the earlier German Communists, as they usually styled themselves, or Socialists, as we now term them.
