Book The Modern Pistol

Download or read book The Modern Pistol written by Walter Winans and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Pistol: And How to Shoot It My first book on pistol shooting (The Art of Revolver Shooting) was published in 1900. Up to that date there existed no book which contained instruction on pistol shooting, though several books had appeared describing the different makes of pistols. Since that date several books have appeared - some very good ones, by various revolver experts. Unfortunately (as always happens when something original appears), others who were not revolver shots took to writing books on the same subject, largely made up of unacknowledged extracts from my books. Not understanding their subject, they distorted my teaching, and so any one trying to learn pistol shooting from them gets hopelessly confused. I therefore give this warning; do not follow the advice of any but an acknowledged expert in pistol shooting, as books by hack writers, made up of extracts from other writers, and illustrations from gunmakers' catalogues, are not to be taken seriously. Moreover, the revolver is now obsolete, and there is no use learning to shoot it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Automatic Shotgun In offering a buffalo herd to the National Government as a gift the zoological society seeks to demonstrate the interest of private individuals in the fate of our most conspicuous American quadruped. We feel that it is the duty of individuals to do something toward the establishment of the series of buffalo herds that should be established very soon. It is very gratifying to know that the game-refuge bill is in a fair way to become a law. We earnestly hope that the Opinion of the attorney-general in regard to the constitutionality of a migratory wild-fowl act against spring shooting will be as all wish it to be. In view Of the enormous annual outlay for firearms to be used against game birds it is impossible to have too much legislation in behalf of the birds. I have recently been assured by a gun inventor and manufacturer, who has every Opportunity for Obtaining information, that every year there are sold in this country about 500 000 shotguns, of which about 350 000 cost $5 or less. He also stated that in his opinion there are now in use in this country about Shotguns, in which about 1000000000 cartridges are used every year. Of these are manufactured in the factories and the number is therefore well known. The other are shells that are reloaded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle, Vol. 2 of 2: Including Game and Wildfowl Guns, Sporting and Match Rifles and Revolvers; The Sporting Rifle, Match Rifle, and Revolver Although, as I stated in my Preface to the First Volume of this work, I began to examine into the subjects connected with the shot gun and rifle a quarter of a century ago, I had not kept my knowledge on a level with the great progress made in the latter arm during the last few years. When Sir Joseph Whitworth promulgated the results of his experiments in 1858, I took considerable pains to ascertain their value, not only from a military point of view, but also from that of the Sportsman and for some years after the institution of the annual trial of small bores by the National Rifle Association, I carefully-attended them at Woolwich, and duly reported the results in the Field, as well as the shooting of the selected rifle at Wimbledon. After some few years, however, they ceased to be of much value to the sportsman, and the pressure of other matters induced me not only to forego all allusion to the trials, but also to discontinue the reports of the Wimbledon Meetings. The result was that, when, after the publication of the first volume, on the Shot gun, I had to turn my attention to the rifle, Ifound that I was several. Book Modern Shot Guns

Download or read book Modern Shot Guns written by W. W. Greener and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Shot Guns In the present treatise the Author has endeavoured to give such information as is constantly demanded of gunmakers by shooting men. Notwithstanding the number of published books written by sportsmen for sportsmen, there is much information indispensable to those who use guns, which the gunmaker only can impart Modern Shot Guns is not intended to be a sportsman's encyclopædia, it is not a compound of gunmakers' circulars, nor docs it exhibit those conflicting opinions and diverse conclusions found in recent books on the same subject - such books having been written with the collaboration of various persons more or less interested in the subjects treated. These books do not enable the sportsman to arrive at any definite conclusion with respect to the merits or demerits of any mechanism, and merely M beat about the bush" with respect to the more important technicalities of gunnery. The columns devoted to shooting in the sporting newspapers teem with flippant nonsense concerning the facts of gunmaking, and although it is apparent that newspapers derive benefit by keeping subjects perpetually open, by so doing they propagate ignorance amongst their readers, and do but bewilder those they pretend to lead. Book Modern American Pistols and Revolvers

Download or read book Modern American Pistols and Revolvers written by Arthur Corbin Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Pistols and Revolvers: An Account of the Development of Pistols and Revolvers in America The first edition of Modern American Pistols and Revolvers was published in 1888. At that time there was but little general knowledge of the capabilities of the pistol or the revolver. A general impression pre vailed that there was little or no accuracy in the arms, or if they were accurate, those manipulating them skill fully were specially gifted. The publication of the first edition showed the great accuracy and reliability of certain arms, and made it apparent that to become skillful in manipulating them-was only a matter of practice. This stimulated many devotees of shooting to attempt to acquire a proficiency. As a result, at the time of writing there are expert pistol and revolver shots in various sections of the country; and as the shooting world has no national confines, this statement may be applied to many parts of the world.
