Book excerpt: A mommy blogger gone bad… Jess McAdams dotes on her four children and gives advice and suggestions to parents all around the world. No one would ever question her love and devotion to her children, let alone suspect her of murdering one. But Alex Mercer does. Alex has plenty of experience investigating crimes involving missing kids. So when he senses something is wrong, he trusts his instincts. The only problem is, he’s a newly deputized officer of the law. If he’s wrong about Jess, he’ll destroy his career before it gets off the ground. He receives a tip that Jess has suddenly stopped posting about one of her children. It’s almost as if he never existed, except her old blog posts show otherwise. The deeper Alex digs, the more twisted and sinister things begin to look. His precinct’s resources would be invaluable to his investigation, but his commanding officer isn’t convinced the case is local and turns him down. And Alex doesn’t have the evidence to sway his captain—yet. His only chance at finding the proof he needs is by using the resources he’s been denied. But Alex will stop at nothing until he finds the mommy blogger and saves the children he knows are in danger—even at the risk of losing his dream job—because he knows he’s right. And with young lives on the line, there’s a lot more at stake than his career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere between global and local, the nation still lingers as a concept. National art histories continue to be written – some for the first time – while innovative methods and practices redraw the boundaries of these imagined communities. Narratives Unfolding considers the mobility of ideas, transnationalism, and entangled histories in essays that define new ways to see national art in ever-changing nations. Examining works that were designed to reclaim or rethink issues of territory and dispossession, home and exile, contributors to this volume demonstrate that the writing of national art histories is a vital project for intergenerational exchange of knowledge and its visual formations. Essays showcase revealing moments of modern and contemporary art history in Canada, Egypt, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel/Palestine, Romania, Scotland, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, paying particular attention to the agency of institutions such as archives, art galleries, milestone exhibitions, and artist retreats. Old and emergent art cities, including Cairo, Dubai, New York, and Vancouver, are also examined in light of avant-gardism, cosmopolitanism, and migration. Narratives Unfolding is both a survey of current art historical approaches and their connection to the source: art-making and art experience happening somewhere.

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Book Charles Pettigrew First Bishop Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Charles Pettigrew First Bishop Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church Classic Reprint written by Bennett H. Wall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Pettigrew, First Bishop-Elect of the North Carolina Episcopal Church As soon as he received the news of his appointment, Pettigrew resigned his position in Bute County and moved to Edenton. He became a member of the Church of England about this time and obtained a position as lay reader of St. Paul's Church in Edenton. Since several members of the vestry of St. Paul's Parish were trustees of the academy, it is reasonable to assume that he had contacted these men and made known to them his desire to become a minister of the Church of England. Whether or not that View is correct, it is known that while occupying the positions of schoolmaster and lay reader he engaged in the studies expected of candidates for ordination in that church. In the spring of 1775 he sailed for London where he was duly ordained deacon and priest by the bishops of London and Rochester. Book The Forgotten Rohingya Their Struggle for Human Rights in Burma

Download or read book The Forgotten Rohingya Their Struggle for Human Rights in Burma written by Habib Habib Siddiqui and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine that you are living in a country that does not recognize you as a citizen in spite of the fact that your people have maintained a continuous existence there for several centuries. If that was not enough of a traumatic experience, consider that because of your racial, ethnic and religious identity other ethnic groups that are fighting the brutal military regime in your country for their self-determination and human rights consider you as "settlers" from a neighboring country. It must be your worst nightmare when you realize that half of your people (almost 2 million) have been forced to take asylum or refuge outside, and you may be the next in line to seek a way out of this living hell of xenophobia, discrimination, intolerance, racism and bigotry. The victims are the Rohingya people of Burma (Myanmar). Because of their religion, race, ethnicity, color and language they are the most discriminated and persecuted people in our planet. Some argue that they are also one of the most forgotten. The Myanmar military regime has denied their citizenship rights, claiming that they are illegal settlers from nearby Bangladesh who have moved into Arakan during the British occupation of Burma in the 19th century. Is there any truth to such allegations? Does the military junta apply the same litmus test against all ethnic and religious groups in matters of citizenship? What is the basis for a nation's claim to self-determination? Must a people wander in the wilderness for two millennia and suffer repeated persecution, humiliation and genocide to qualify? How about the rights of a minority community to survive with their culture and traditions intact? Do they need to be 'children' of a 'higher' God to qualify? What makes the children of a 'lesser' God to be forgotten and denied the same treatment and privilege that was granted hitherto to other nations? For much of its history, Burma has been ruled by military. As has once again been demonstrated recently they are brutal, savage and tyrannical. They have ignored people's verdict in the election and imprisoned leaders and workers of the democracy movement. They cannot be guarantors or protectors of human rights of anyone, let alone religious and ethnic minorities. Do you know that the Rohingyas - face cruel restriction on marriage and those married without government authorization are paraded naked on the streets?- Are restricted from traveling outside their villages?- Have no legal right to own land or property?- Are restricted from getting education, finding work, getting medical and health care? - Are subjected to land confiscation, forced eviction and destruction of homes, offices, schools, mosques, shops, etc., and face religious persecution on a daily basis? - Are victims of staged riots, forced starvation, arbitrary taxation, extortion, arrest, torture and extra-judicial killings?- Are forced to do slave labor for establishment of government infrastructure, new Buddhist settlements, pagodas and monasteries on evicted lands with the government intent of changing the landscape and demography of Arakan?- Are forced to convert to Buddhism &/or worship Buddha? Do you know that when it comes to the Rohingya people, the Burmese government doesn't uphold any of the Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?Nothing can excuse us from the criminal silence that we practice in not voicing our concern about the plight of the Rohingya people. "The Forgotten Rohingya" makes a strong case for mobilizing concerned citizens of our globe to ease their sufferings. The author analyzes origin of the Rohingya people and offers ideas to solve their problem. The author also discusses problems of xenophobia and racism, which are so rampant in this country of many races, ethnicities and religions. He also analyzes the role of Daw Suu Kyi and failure of Burma's orange revolution.
