Book Modern News Editing

Download or read book Modern News Editing written by Mark D. Ludwig and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen significant shifts in the roles of editors in the newsroom. Pagination has moved page composition from the backshop into the newsroom, placing additional responsibilities on copy and design editors. Newsrooms have become more collaborative, with emphasis on cooperation between various departments, and between copy editors and assigning editors. The biggest change is the growth of the Internet as a medium for news delivery. Most newspapers have accompanying Web sites, where breaking news can be posted for audiences long before the next print edition goes to press. In a sense, it’s a return to the days when newspapers published multiple editions throughout the day—only now, it’s done online. In Modern News Editing, authors Ludwig and Gilmore have creatively reworked Gilmore’s classic textbook to fully integrate editing for online publication and editing for print. Whether the medium is a print newspaper or an online news site, the function of editors remains the same: to guide a news story from its inception to its publication. The fundamentals are still necessary. Is it news? How should it be approached? How should it be presented? Does the grammar pass muster? Is style consistently followed? Do headlines and photo captions capture reader interests? What are the needs and desires of the audience? Have the responsibilities of the news media to promote a free and self-governing society been met? The Modern News Editing CD-ROM is packed with exercises to practice the concepts taught. Microsoft Word files feature editable sentences and stories containing problems with spelling, grammar, style, and incorrect facts. Also included are photographs in JPEG format for import into photo editing and/or page layout programs, to practice cropping and sizing, and for use in page design. Sample pages and page templates in Quark Xpress, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe PageMaker are presented for use in page design exercises. Modern News Editing is the textbook of choice to train future editors, whether they work for a print newsroom or an online publication.

Book News with a View

Download or read book News with a View written by Burton St. John III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern mainstream journalism faces a very real disturbance of its foundational premise that credible news is gathered and articulated from an objective stance. This volume offers new examinations of how the traditional notion of objectivity is changing as professional journalists grapple with a rapidly evolving news terrain--one that has become increasingly crowded by those with no journalistic credentials. Examining historical antecedents, current dilemmas, international aspects, and theoretical considerations, contributors make the case that the journalist's impulse to hold onto objectivity, and to ignore the increasing subjectivities to which citizens are attuned, actually contributes to the news media's disconnect from today's news consumer. Revealing how traditional journalism needs to incorporate "post-objective" stances, these essays stimulate further thought and conversation about news with a view in both theory and practice.

Download or read book Electronic Textual Editing written by Lou Burnard and published by Modern Language Assn of Amer. This book was released on 2006 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long history of textual editing and scholarship has been intimately involved with the physique of the book, which set limits on the presentation and study of text. Increasingly, since the 1980s, the written word has taken on a digital form, and the shift from codex to computer, from print to electronic media, creates new opportunities - and new difficulties. This volume offers an emerging consensus about the fundamental issues of electronic textual editing. It provides practical advice and faces theoretical questions. Its twenty-four essays deal with markup coding and procedures, electronic archive administration, use of standards (such as Unicode), rights and permissions, and the changing and challenging environment of the Internet. Some of the specific texts discussed are Greek and Latin inscriptions, the Gospel of John, the Canterbury Tales, William Blake's poems and art, Percy Bysshe Shelley's The Devil's Walk, Stijn Streuvels's De teleurgang van den Waterhoek, Ludwig Wittgenstein's Nachlass, and the papers of Thomas Edison. The guidelines of the MLA's Committee on Scholarly Editions, recently revised to address electronic editions, are included in full. The CD accompanying this volume contains the complete text of the Text Encoding Initiative guidelines (P4 edition) in both HTML and PDF formats.
