Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Music and Musicians, Vol. 3 Music, as we know it now, with its broad melodies, its harmonic wealth, dazzling instrumental color, its intense expressiveness, is the youngest of the arts. The beginning of its present position dates only from the end of the eighteenth century - from Beethoven. But Beethoven had predecessors who for several centuries had prepared the ground for its heavenly seed. In Russia, music as an art goes back only to 1836, and thanks to the genius of Glinka - armed of a sudden, completely equipped, without preparation of any sort. True it is that the soil was fertile and that the musical genius of the Russian people had long before revealed itself in admirable folk songs which attracted the attention of musicians like Beethoven. I refer to his use of Russian themes in his quartets. In Russia, as everywhere else, vocal music preceded the instrumental. Since the first half of the eighteenth century (1735) an opera house has existed in Petrograd, but the first opera there was Italian. Twenty years later a troupe of Russian singers was organized and music was written to Russian words. Catherine II wrote the texts of five operas. The composers were foreigners. The efforts of a few native composers, even of the most gifted, such as Verstarsky, were so colorless and unskilled that hardly any fragments of the scores have come down to us. Michael Glinka (1804-1857) gave serious study to the piano. As for theory, he busied himself with it, sometimes in Petrograd and sometimes when abroad, but he never took a complete and systematic course. His natural gifts supplied the deficiency. He determined to write an opera, and in "A Life for the Czar," presented in 1836, at once created a masterpiece. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Music and Musicians There are many who will be inclined to deny that programme music has a history at all, or at any rate one worth writing, but as a matter of fact the idea that music is capable Of any but an abstract use is far Older than is generally supposed. Nearly four hundred years ago, at a time when music, from our point of view, was barely articulate, Sir Thomas More wrote Of his Utopians: For all their music, both that they play upon instruments and that they sing with man's voice, doth so resemble and express natural affections, the sound and tune is so applied and made agreeable to the thing, that whether it be a prayer or else a ditty of gladness, of patience, of trouble, Of mourning or Of anger, the fashion Of the melody doth so represent the meaning Of the thing, that it doth wonderfully move, stir, pierce and inflame the hearers' minds. Book The American Musical Landscape

Download or read book The American Musical Landscape written by Richard Crawford and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book reflects a breakthrough in American music studies, an unrecognized field among traditional musicologists until the past few decades, during which enormous progress has been made in documenting three centuries of American musical activities and figures. Time and effort had to be expended exclusively on the development of basic historical studies. The time has come for a new phase, one that can take a creative, interpretive approach. Professor Crawford's study will introduce this higher level of scholarship into the field of American music studies."—Vivian Perlis, author of Charles Ives Remembered "A major statement by a senior scholar on what American musicology is all about. . . These themes are also topical; they come at a time when much more research is being done in American music, but little thought is being given to the big picture, the vision, the philosophy, and the implications of historical research. Now is the time for a synthesis, and there are few scholars better equipped to do that in American music than Richard Crawford."—Michael Broyles, author of Music of the Highest Class

Book The Music of the Modern World Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Music of the Modern World Vol 1 of 2 written by Fanny Morris Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music of the Modern World, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated in the Lives and Works of the Greatest Modern Musicians and in Reproductions of Famous Paintings, Etc Scheffer, Eugene Delacroix, and Paul Delaroche, members of circles where music held a supreme interest. Music is SO nearly allied to painting and sculpture that a picture is Often a better guide to the meaning of a piece than any words - even words Of poetry. The pictorial suggestions Offered in our music pages are only suggestions, but as such may prove stimulating to the imagination of the pianist and singer, especially when they express motion or grace in repose. They Should not be taken too seriously. It is hardly necessary to add that the music OF the modern world is in no sense an encyclopaedia. Quite as many great artists are unmentioned in its pages as find a place there, quite as many very great composers remain unquoted as are repre sented in its music pages. In the case Of Wagner and Berlioz, the narrow excerpt of a melody, or a Short transcription from works so massive, grand, and full of detail, affords no example Of the genius or style Of those immense contours, whereas the tuneful num bers of Rossini, Gounod, or even Meyerbeer are easily separated from their original environment because they are complete in themselves. Much of the music selected is cameo-like in its dimensions and finish, because only cameos could be contained in SO small a compass as the number of pages at our disposal. The editors have collected a group of melodies that will never become Old while civilization endures. Those culled from Russia, Bohemia, and Hungary are as yet scarcely known in America; they will sur prise as much by their congeniality to American temperament as by their exquisite fresh ness. The illustrations of Hunyady Laszlo, by Pennell, are the fruit Of a season's wan dering in Hungary in search of gipsy music. It is needless to say that the author of the great national opera Of Hungary was not a gipsy, and that the patriotic themes that form the context Of the opera are of the purest Hungarian character. Special acknowledgments are due to Gunther co. For the care with which they have type-set the piano music. We believe that such feats as the pedal phrasing in Vogel als Prophet have never before been accomplished with music type.
