Book Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art

Download or read book Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art written by C.A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the 1st International Conference on Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art. The papers deal with the design of many types of buildings in Islamic countries and the influence that these structural forms have had in non-Islamic countries. Coverage will also include construction materials. There is much to learn from past experiences to arrive at solutions that are environmentally sound and sustainable in the long term. As conventional energy resources become scarce, the Islamic design heritage can offer invaluable lessons on how to deal with difficult and extreme environments in an efficient manner. Traditional architecture and urban environment in most Islamic countries is now being eroded by overemphasis on global type of architecture and city planning. As a consequence, many regions are losing their identity. The Conference will aim to review these developments in the light of what the classical Islamic urban designs and architectures have to offer modern society. There will also be coverage of conservation techniques appropriate to the materials and structural forms used. Topics covered include: Architectural heritage; Archaeological studies; Historical aspects; The Islamic urban environment; Types of buildings (e.g., Mosques and minarets; Mausolea; Citadels and fortifications, Baths and caravanserais; Bridges and dams; Cisterns and quants; Earth-sheltered architecture; Irrigation systems; Wind towers); Climate adaptability; Arches and vaults; Domes and squinches; Double shell dome; Geometry and orientation; The use of light; Design and nature; Vernacular architecture; Construction materials (e.g., Masonry and mortars; Wood, Metals; Tiles, Adobe); Structural analysis; Earthquake resistant structures; Calligraphy, painting and patterns; Architectural conservation. The contents will be of interest to all researchers, practitioners and government employees actively involved with Islamic Heritage Architecture.

Book Historical Mosques in Indonesia and the Malay World

Download or read book Historical Mosques in Indonesia and the Malay World written by Bagoes Wiryomartono and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an interdisciplinary study on the relationship between Muslims and their mosques in Indonesia and Malaysia. It presents selected historic mosques that demonstrate local interpretations and sociocultural assimilation, as well as a geographical syncretism, of Islam in local societies. The book unveils the contestations, synchronizations, assimilations, and integrations of local and foreign elements into the contextual architecture and sociologically institutionalized system that is the mosque: the Islamic place of worship. The author excavates the mosque’s historical origins and traces the iconic elements, features, and designs from their earliest historical settings and contexts. He then identifies, analyzes, and theorizes the outcomes of the interaction between Islam and local traditions through Malaysian and Indonesian case studies. The book proposes that Islam, at its philosophical level, can be culturally acceptable anywhere because it contains universal virtues of humanity for equality, fraternity, and social justice. The book unfolds how a dialectical contestation and acculturation of Dutch colonialism, Middle Eastern elements of culture, and local customs and traditions, might then come into dialogue, peacefully. Finally, the book considers the relationship between Malay and Indonesian architecture within their respective political cultures, shedding light on Islam and its practice within rich multicultural contexts. Relevant to students and researchers in Islamic studies, architecture, and Southeast Asian studies more broadly, the book uncovers the issues, constraints, and opportunities relating to the meaning of mosques for Muslims in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Book Mosques Design By Dato Dr Ar Hj Baharuddin Abu Kassim JBIP

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biographical monograph is probably the only pictorial and a narration document about a living architectural legacy, the father of the modernist architecture in Malaysia, Dato' (Dr.) Ar. Hj. Baharuddin Abu Kassim. Born on 1929 in Jeram, Selangor to a Malay-Bugis descent family, Dato' Baharuddin received his formal education in architecture and planning at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom in 1958. His early work as a young architect influenced not only many modern architects in Malaysia but also influenced many early leaders and the public. Many of his early works and other known architects' during that time started the Malaysian Modern Movement. This happened during the time; Malaysia had just gained her independence in 1957, and the modern architecture was used to express this new found confidence gained from being an independent country. One great example is his earlier works is the Masjid Negara (National Mosque) in Kuala Lumpur completed in 1965 while he was attached to the Public Works Department. This mosque is still standing elegantly after 51 years and is known to be one of the great modern mosques of the world. At a time when expatriate firms dominated the architectural profession, Dato' Baharuddin started one of the few truly Malaysian architectural practices in 1965 called The Malayan Architects Co-Partnership. Then two years later he founded Jurubena Bertiga/Architects Team 3 which was the forerunner to Jurubena Bertiga International Sdn. Bhd. Since then, Dato' Baharuddin with Jurubena Bertiga has designed many great modern mosques throughout Malaysia, namely the Selangor State Mosque in Shah Alam, Sandakan Mosque, Sabah State Mosque in Kota Kinabalu, Islamic College of Malaya Mosque in Petaling Jaya; An-Nur Jamek Mosque in Labuan, Negeri Sembilan State Mosque in Seremban and many others. Dato' Baharuddin innovative use of materials, firstly the fluidity use of reinforced concrete and later the use of steel and metal in his design had influenced the design of his Modern Mosque over traditional materials of masonry and concrete. In 2009, Dato' Baharuddin was conferred PAM Gold Medal Award by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the highest architectural accolade in the country. In 2015, the year of the 50th anniversary of the National Mosque, Dato' Baharuddin was awarded the Anugerah Maulidur Rasul by the Government of Malaysia during the national celebration of Maulidur Rasul (Mawlid, the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday) in Serdang, Selangor. This monograph is a compilation of the selected mosques projects by Dato' Baharuddin, with a short narration of his early life as an architect. It was compiled and written by his former novice staff, the Chief Executive Officer of ATSA Architects, Azim A. Aziz.

Book Mosque Architecture A Transdisciplinary Debate

Download or read book Mosque Architecture A Transdisciplinary Debate written by Mohammed Fekry and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a backdrop of environmental and societal concerns, best captured by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this book brings together the leading voices on Mosque architecture to make a case for its role as a purveyor of culture, heritage, and sustainability in the modern world. The Mosque, as an institution, continues to serve as the epicenter of spiritual, moral, and cultural life in Muslim societies. Recognizing that the popular understanding of Muslim culture and archetypes is, at best, minimal among the broader public worldwide, this book has two objectives: i.e., (i) to explore Masjid architecture as a carrier of culture, heritage, and the sustainability of Muslim communities; and (ii) to offer a bias-free introduction to the intricacies of Muslim architecture, culture, and heritage today. The papers featured in this collection were presented at the 5th Memaryat International Conference (MIC), held at Effat University, Jeddah. The MIC’s objective is to build bridges between research communities engaged with diverse aspects of science, technology, and innovation, seen as the key levers for attaining the SDGs.

This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connected Histories of India and Southeast Asia unravels the fascinating history of cultural interactions, of outstanding and universal significance, between India and Southeast Asia, with special emphasis on artistic expressions. India's connections with Southeast Asian countries, namely, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are seen not only in trade and commerce but also in cultural and religious exchanges. Such histories are well-documented in their monuments, icons, narratives, inscribed artefacts, texts, and ritual paraphernalia. The first part of the book offers an overview of the nature of cultural and artistic interactions and the trade routes that facilitated an exchange of ideas, objects, people, and knowledge systems since ancient times. The second part addresses issues relating to architectural forms, motifs, and mobility across long distances and time periods. The final segment includes essays that discuss narratives and iconographies arising from cross-cultural artistic exchanges. With contributions by eminent scholars and over 170 colour photographs, maps, and illustrations, this book is an invaluable resource for understanding connected histories, which play a key role in revitalizing cultural connectivity and people-to-people contacts between India and Southeast Asia.
