Very few people know the Hebrew language, or are able to test these assertions, except by such light of ordinary criticism as they may happen to possess, by the laws of literature and the force of nature; but I think that few, comparatively, will be tempted to transfer a faith, in which they have been trained from their childhood, to a small group of unknown persons, whose motives are dubious, and their methods more ingenious than ingenu ous; and to reject on their authority, as a series of often fraudulent fables, the history so full of nature, so instinct with every feeling of humanity, which has been the food. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy City: Jerusalem II It was a hot August in Palestine. Every day the sun beat down upon the heads of the people. There was not a cloud on the sky and no rain had fallen since April. Though not any hotter than it is wont to be at this season, it was almost unbearable. How one would ever be able to endure such heat one hardly knew, or where one could go to escape it. Jaffa was perhaps the best refuge - not in the city itself, with its buildings crowded closely together on a steep hill, and where a sickening stench arose from the filthy streets and the large soap factories; but the town lay close by the sea, which always brought some freshening breeze. And one could be fairly comfortable in the environs, as Jaffa was surrounded by hundreds of orange groves, where the fruit hung fresh and cool, protected from the blasting sunlight by its stiff and glossy dark-green foliage. But how insufferably hot it was even in Jaffa! The big leaves of the tall, resinous shrubs were dry and shriveled and the hardy pelargoniums, no longer able to flower, lay drooping on mounds and in hollows - almost buried beneath billows of dust. Book The Makers and Teachers of Judaism

Download or read book The Makers and Teachers of Judaism written by Charles Foster Kent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Makers and Teachers of Judaism: From the Fall of Jerusalem to the Death of Herod the Great The volume of literature coming from this period is so vast that it has been necessary to abridge it at many points in order to utilize that which is most valuable. This has been done by leaving out those pas sages which are of secondary origin or value, and by preserving at the same time the language and logical thought of the original writers. In the verbose and voluminous writings of Josephus the resulting text is in most cases far clearer and more useful; for the repetitious clauses found in the original often obscure the real thought of the writer. N o apology or explanation is required for the use of such apocryphal writ ings as I Maccabees, Ben Sira, the Wisdom of Solomon, or J osephus's histories, for these are required to bridge the two centuries which inter vene between the latest writings of the Old Testament and the earliest writings of the New. They make it possible to study biblical history as an unbroken unit from the days of Moses to the close of the first Chris tian century, and thus concretely to emphasize the significant but often the forgotten fact that God was revealing himself unceasingly through the life of his people, and that the Bible which records that revelation consists not of two disconnected parts but is one book. To two of my former students, the Reverend Harold B. Hunting and Ralph H. Pierce, I am under obligation for valuable aid and suggestions in preparing this volume for press. The Swedish Academy, in recognizing Miss Selma Lagerlof, declared that they did so for reason of the noble idealism, the wealth of imagination, the soulful quality of style, which characterize her works.
