Book excerpt: "Lieutenant Frederick Henry Beecher was planning to make a visit home to see his family that Spring in 1868, when he received an order to embark on a new mission. Civil War General Phil Sheridan asked him to assist Major George "Sandy" Forsyth in recruiting and leading a unit of fifty elite civilian scouts, to search for Cheyenne and Sioux warriors and engage them in combat. Beecher was stationed at Fort Wallace in Kansas and had previously engaged with the Cheyenne during an attack on the Fort in the summer of 1867. He was known to be a good shot, and Major Forsyth thought highly of his skills, describing him as "...brave and modest, with a love of hunting and a natural taste for plainscraft; he was a splendid specimen of a thoroughbred American, and a most valuable man in any position requiring coolness, courage and tact." Ongoing conflict between nomadic Native peoples and civilians placed pressure on the under-resourced U.S. Army, leading to the use of civilian scouts. Beecher helped assemble a group known for their tracking skills, and they set off from Fort Hayes, Kansas, heading west for Fort Wallace. They arrived in September and soon learned of an attack on a freight train about thirteen miles east. The next morning, under Forsyth's command, they set out in pursuit of the raiders, following their trail into Yuma County Colorado. The scouts soon lost the trail, yet their travels did not go unnoticed. As they made camp on the south bank of the Arikakee River, a large party of Cheyenne and Sioux gathered nearby for a massive surprise attack"--

Since 1902, when its predecessor, Kobe Higher Commercial School, was established, KUBS has been a pioneer of research and education in management studies in Japan by overcoming many obstacles and difficulties. Even now in the age of globalization, the spirit of innovation and liberal academic style, from the time of its establishment, are inherent in KUBS, and the faculty members have made great efforts to be innovative in management studies. This book explains that process through an historical case study of an automobile insurance entrepreneur, Samuel P. Black, Jr., and Erie Insurance, the company he helped build. It also recounts the largely untold history of American automobile insurance. One of this study's central themes is the role of innovation in the entrepreneurial process. The rise of Erie Insurance from a four-person enterprise in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1925 to the fourteenth largest property-casualty insurer today was the result, in part, of Black's relentless push to innovate. His continual efforts to cut costs, develop new products, satisfy customers, increase sales, and improve operations, all contributed greatly to the company's growth. A second theme is the automobile's dramatic impact on modern America. Its takeover of mass transportation provided the basis for the development of the automobile insurance industry and created many of the opportunities that Black and Erie Insurance capitalized on. These themes combine in the history of Black and Erie Insurance to illuminate the dynamic process by which the cultural, social, economic, and technological environment creates opportunities that entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial firms exploit, and how entrepreneurial actions stimulate economic growth.

The National Flood Insurance Program illustrates how a public-/private-sector partnership can mitigate damages and provide financial protection to victims. The book identifies new initiatives for reducing future losses and providing funds for recovery through cooperation by the relevant parties.

Book excerpt: This book argues that language and literature actively produced chance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by categorizing injuries and losses as innocent of design. Automobile collisions and occupational injuries became "car accidents" and "industrial accidents." During the post-Civil War period of racial, ethnic, and class-based hostility, chance was an abstract enemy against which society might unite. By producing chance, novels by William Dean Howells, Stephen Crane, Anna Katharine Green, Edith Wharton, Theodore Dreiser, and James Cain documented and helped establish new modes of collective interdependence. Chance here is connected not with the competitive individualism of the Gilded Age, but with important progressive and social democratic reforms, including developments in insurance, which had long employed accident narratives to shape its own "mutual society." Accident Society reveals the extent to which American collectivity has depended—and continues to depend—on the literary production of chance.
