Book The Development of Modern Industries in Bengal

Download or read book The Development of Modern Industries in Bengal written by Indrajit Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bengal’s traditional industries, once celebrated worldwide, largely decayed under the backwash effects of the British Industrial Revolution in the first half of the nineteenth century. Although colonial ambivalence is often cited as an explanation, this study also shows that a series of new industries emerged during this period. The book reappraises the thesis of India’s deindustrialisation and discusses the development status of the traditional industries in the early nineteenth century, examines their technology, employment opportunities and marketing and, finally, analyses the underlying reasons for their decay. It offers a study of how traditional industries evolved into modern enterprises in a British colony, and contributes to the broader discussion on the global history of industrialisation. This book will be of interest to scholars of Indian economic history as well as those who seek to understand the widespread effects of industrialisation, especially in a colonial context.

Book Shaping the Industrial Century

Download or read book Shaping the Industrial Century written by Alfred D. Chandler Jr. and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dean of business historians continues his masterful chronicle of the transforming revolutions of the twentieth century begun in Inventing the Electronic Century. Alfred Chandler argues that only with consistent attention to research and development and an emphasis on long-term corporate strategies could firms remain successful over time. He details these processes for nearly every major chemical and pharmaceutical firm, demonstrating why some companies forged ahead while others failed. By the end of World War II, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries were transformed by the commercializing of new learning, the petrochemical and the antibiotic revolutions. But by the 1970s, chemical science was no longer providing the new learning necessary to commercialize more products, although new directions flourished in the pharmaceutical industries. In the 1980s, major drug companies, including Eli Lilly, Merck, and Schering Plough, commercialized the first biotechnology products, and as the twenty-first century began, the infrastructure of this biotechnology revolution was comparable to that of the second industrial revolution just before World War I and the information revolution of the 1960s. Shaping the Industrial Century is a major contribution to our understanding of the most dynamic industries of the modern era.

Book Modern Industry and the African

Download or read book Modern Industry and the African written by J. Merle Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1933, at the time of its publication, Modern Industry and the African represented a progressive, essentially liberal approach to the development of the Copperbelt of Northern Rhodesia and the response thereto of the Christian Church. It expressed the authors' very real fears that urbanization would irreparably damage the foundations of indigenous life and demonstrated their implicit faith in the virtues of a past 'golden age' of rural stability. In many respects the study was a landmark, beginning a new trend of investigation into 'sociological' aspects of African administration.

Book Stages of Industrial Development in Asia

Download or read book Stages of Industrial Development in Asia written by Sung Jae Koh and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a major contribution to fuller understanding of the modern economic and industrial history of Asian nations and to the general understanding of the socioeconomic conditions in underdeveloped countries, stressing the history of the modernization of the cotton industry, not merely because of its basic importance but also because such limitation gives definiteness to the subject. The author analyzes all the factors that have changed the tempo, altered the direction, and limited the extent of the industrial development in these countries, with special references to the economic implication of actions by social organizations and political institutions. The volume contains a wealth of detailed statistical matter in which the reader will find systematically the main factual contexts of the industrial development of each country. Sung Jae Koh's service to English readers is therefore an important one in a field where there is an acknowledged growing need for such information. Sung Jae Koh held professorships at Yonsei University and Seoul National University. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.

Book China s Centralized Industrial Order

Download or read book China s Centralized Industrial Order written by Chen Li and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the political economy of China’s industrial reform and the rise of a group of Chinese big businesses under the Communist Party and the central state’s control. It examines the origins, evolution and institutional configuration of this centralized system in governing the ‘commanding heights’ of the Chinese industrial economy. Shaped by persistent industrial policies to develop China’s ‘national champions’ enterprises, the core parts of China’s central industrial ministries and mono-bank system have been transformed into a ‘national team’ of giant modern business firms in industries such as oil, power generation, telecommunications, aerospace, aviation, nuclear, shipbuilding, mining, construction, automobile and banking. Through an adaptive process of learning, experimentation and restructuring, the bedrock of the authority relations and control mechanisms among the Party, government bureaucracy and firms has been consolidated rather than dismantled in the system’s transformation. This alternative view of China’s industrial reform presents a direct challenge to the neo-liberal transition model of China’s institutional development and the mainstream Western conceptions of Chinese big business.

Book Technology and Industrial Growth in Pre War Japan

Download or read book Technology and Industrial Growth in Pre War Japan written by Yukiko Fukasaku and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to discredit the myth that has the `unique cultural traits' of the Japanese as the key to the country's success, arguing that the more realisable foundation of long-term investment in training and research is responsible. The book looks at the development of Japan in the pre-War period. Yukiko Fukusaku sees the achievements of this period as central to the present competitiveness of the country's industrial technology. She uses the Mitsubishi Nagasaki shipyard as a case study, looking at technological innovation and training as the keys to long-term stability and economic success. The book has implications for industrial development worldwide. Japan's starting point over a century ago was similar to the present conditions of many developing countries and the book's emphasis on the acquisition of better skills as a key to development is as relevant to Europe and America as it is to the Third World.
