Download or read book Masters of French Music Classic Reprint written by Arthur Hervey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Music The reader who turns to these pages with the idea of finding therein a large and exhaustive account of the composers mentioned, with a technical analysis of their works, will, I fear, be disappointed. My intention has been a far more modest one. The dimensions of this volume would not have allowed me to devote that amount of space to each composer that might be considered due to his merits. The object I have had in view has been to give an account of their lives and to draw attention to the tendencies exhibited in their works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Masters The source of art is the fountain of Love: the Winged spirits, Painting, Sculpture, and Poetry, spring from it hand in hand. With affectionate leave-takings and cries of joy at their liberation, they soar into space, the angel of Music out-winging the rest because of more lambent fibre, but she is no more vital nor pulsating than her sisters. Genius is Love, Talent is the sure perception of essentials combined with the power of expression. Talent, coupled with genius, produces the Love-Child that men call a Masterpiece. The love-child in Art is the most perfect of all human creations, whether the artist lover be conventional or academic, or rebellious against form and schools, or capricious and eccentric. Emerson said: "Write above your door the word, 'Whim.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Music Discipline and Arms in Early Modern France

Download or read book Music Discipline and Arms in Early Modern France written by Kate van Orden and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking new study, Kate van Orden examines noble education in the arts to show how music contributed to cultural and social transformation in early modern French society. She constructs a fresh account of music's importance in promoting the absolutism that the French monarchy would fully embrace under Louis XIV, uncovering many hitherto unpublished ballets and royal ceremonial performances. The great pressure on French noblemen to take up the life of the warrior gave rise to bellicose art forms such as sword dances and equestrian ballets. Far from being construed as effeminizing, such combinations of music and the martial arts were at once refined and masculine-a perfect way to display military prowess. The incursion of music into riding schools and infantry drills contributed materially to disciplinary order, enabling the larger and more effective armies of the seventeenth century. This book is a history of the development of these musical spheres and how they brought forth new cultural priorities of civility, military discipline, and political harmony. Music, Discipline, and Arms in Early Modern France effectively illustrates the seminal role music played in mediating between the cultural spheres of letters and arms.

Book Music and the Romantic Movement in France Classic Reprint

Download or read book Music and the Romantic Movement in France Classic Reprint written by Arthur Ware Locke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and the Romantic Movement in France The study of the evolution of art and music in connection with contemporary social and political conditions has been urged on the ground that an understanding of the general life of any period is necessary to a svmpathetic understanding of the artistic production of that period. Some argue, on the other hand, that the study of art is, in fact, \a study of the history of man and that it illuminates the study of history rather than vice versa. The truth is that, in studying either art or history. Certain general causes appear which influence the development of both artistic and political ideas. Whatever we learn about these fundamental causes - whether in art or history - the knowledge we gain can always be helpful in unravelling any problems of art-development or of history that we try to solve. Book Music Authorship and the Book in the First Century of Print

Download or read book Music Authorship and the Book in the First Century of Print written by Kate van Orden and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to author a piece of music? What transforms the performance scripts written down by musicians into authored books? In this fascinating cultural history of Western music’s adaptation to print, Kate van Orden looks at how musical authorship first developed through the medium of printing. When music printing began in the sixteenth century, publication did not always involve the composer: printers used the names of famous composers to market books that might include little or none of their music. Publishing sacred music could be career-building for a composer, while some types of popular song proved too light to support a reputation in print, no matter how quickly they sold. Van Orden addresses the complexities that arose for music and musicians in the burgeoning cultures of print, concluding that authoring books of polyphony gained only uneven cultural traction across a century in which composers were still first and foremost performers.
