Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern France, 1789-1895 There is some difficulty in compressing into one volume the history of a century so rich in ideas, in events and in men as the present period has been in France. Such an effort at reduction necessitates the elimination of all that is picturesque in the facts to be related, leaving only their substance, and all attempt at giving any portrait of the personages whose acts are narrated in their results alone. It has struck me, however, that even so brief a summary may not be useless, since the principal characteristics of our century, which are now to be found scattered throughout various special histories, when brought together and united may furnish to the reader their own peculiar contingent of instruction. I shall not dwell on the nature of this instruction, but prefer to leave the facts to speak for themselves, rather than to suggest reflections which might be attributed to party-spirit. I owe to the reader also a few words on the method which I have endeavoured to follow, as well as on the general conception of the work. Book The Great French Revolution 1789 1793 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great French Revolution 1789 1793 Classic Reprint written by Petr Alekseevich Kropotkin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great French Revolution, 1789-1793 The more one studies the French Revolution the clearer it is to see how incomplete is the history of that great epoch, how many gaps in it remain to be filled, how many points demand elucidation. How could it be otherwise? The Great Revolution, that set all Europe astir, that overthrew everything, and began the task of universal reconstruction in the course of a few years, was like the working of cosmic forces dissolving and re-creating a world. And if in the writings of the historians who deal with that period, and especially of Michelet, we admire the immense work they have accomplished in disentangling and co-ordinating the innumerable facts of the various parallel movements that made up the Revolution, we realise at the same time the vastness of the work which still remains to be done. The investigations made during the past thirty years by the school of historical research represented by M. Aulard and the Societe de la Revolution francaise, have certainly furnished most valuable material. They have shed a flood of light upon the acts of the Revolution, on its political aspects, and on the struggles for supremacy that took place between the various parties. But the study of the economic side of the Revolution is still before us, and this study, as M. Aulard rightly says, demands an entire lifetime. Download or read book Revolution and Reaction in Modern France Classic Reprint written by Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revolution and Reaction in Modern France This book does not profess to be a history of Modern France; it is rather an attempt to describe the development of political thought and political parties there. I have not, therefore, made a point of narrating events in their chronological order - a task which has been accomplished by other writers, for example by Mr. Oscar Browning in his "Modern France" - but have endeavoured primarily to seize and reproduce the general character of each successive period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution of 1789, as Viewed in the Light of Republican Institutions The writer has freely expressed his judgment of the transactions which he has narrated The impartiality of history, says Lamartine, is not that of a mirror which merely re ects objects; it should be that of a judge Who sees, listens, and decides: The reader will not be surprised to find that some occurrences which historians caressed in regal courts and baronial halls have denounced as insolent and vulgar are here represented as heroic and noble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolutionary Idea in France, 1789-1871 I should like to make clear what I have tried to do in this little book. There are plenty of histories of the first French Revolution of (roughly) 1789-1830, and one or two of the second of (roughly) 1830-1871, and this, I need hardly say, is not one of them. On the contrary, it is an attempt to present very brie y and to make intelligible what essentially, beneath all the distracting complexity of events, these great movements. Of the. Book The French Revolutions from 1789 to 1848 Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The French Revolutions from 1789 to 1848 Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Thomas W. Redhead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolutions From 1789 to 1848, Vol. 1 Tm: French Revolution, which commenced under Louis XVI. In 1789, and which, under various modifications and phases, has been in opera tion ever since, is, of all others which have occurred in the history of the world, the event that has exercised the most important and decisive influence on the destinies of mankind. The lessons its extraordinary occurrences and stupendous consequences convey are invaluable, since they teach by the most emphatic testimonies those immutable laws of Providential guidance which sway the dispensations of good and evil, of rewards and retributions, in the affairs of men and nations; and they likewise teach to rulers and communities how best they may secure, by timely and prudent sacrifices, the blessings of good govern ment, without passing through the fiery ordeal of a social convulsion. As was natural, such an event has been treated in every variety of temmr and reflection, each writer, animated by the spirit of party, striving to enforce his own peculiar views, and often misrepresenting, always colouring, facts to support his predetermined conclusions. The time is now come, however, when it may be described with truth and impartiality; when the passions of the partisan may merge in the cooler deductions of reason; when it may be considered without any bias tending to obscure the judgment or vitiate the veritable development.
